Diabetic needs help with lo call snacks

My situation:
I'm a type 2 diabetic that has lost weight and has been eating healthy and has decent blood sugar levels now.


My Problem:
However, when I take my medicine and exercise, it dips low. So my hands get shaky and I begin feeling weak.

My Question:
Any suggestions to some lo-cal treats but packs some sugar? Today I happened to have a banana handy because I had a feeling this would happen while walking today, but I'm not going to be able to carry a banana in my pocket all of the time.

Also, I do have a Doctors Appointment coming up soon so I'm going to see about getting off the medicine hopefully.

    My first suggestion would have been fruit but have you thought of maybe a drink like Vitamin Water? The cals aren't all that bad but it does have the carbs. Obviously not the Zero kind...check out the 10 cal bottles and see what the carbs are. If not that just buy the full version. You'll be getting hydrated at the same time!

    I'd say the best option is to carry some hard candy... I know it's not the best "use" of calories, but it's better than having nothing, and it's really portable and cheaper than those glucose gels for athletes. I'd also suggest seeing a doctor or a dietician to either discuss your meds (if your sugar is consistently normal when you're getting regular exercise, you shouldn't need as high a dose as before your levels came down) or build a plan with the right amount of carbs for both "workout" days and "rest" days.

    I have a type 1 diabetic child and they told us that you should eat a snack BEFORE you exercise so that you don't go low. It's been a few years so I don't remember what they suggested to snack on but fruit would work and protein is definitely a help to prevent lows.

    I enjoy the Motts Plus Fiber Cranberry Raspberry No Sugar Added Applesauce. It's 60 calories per container, does not need refrigeration and has 11 g of Sugar (naturally). They come in different flavors as well.

    I read this article and things like walnuts and pistachios, mixed veggies with hummus, dressing and cheeses...baked crackers or chips and fruit like mangos are best for you! Check it out... Hope this help! :flowerforyou:

    Nuts

    Nuts of all kinds make a great snack because they are high in fiber. Fiber works to help stabilize blood sugar levels. This will help in keeping the health of any diabetic where it needs to be. Besides being full of fiber, nuts are filling and will tide anyone over until the next meal. Contained within the nuts are healthy fats that help to lower cholesterol and reduce the chances of heart disease. While most nuts have healthy benefits, pistachios and walnuts are the two that are the best for diabetics. Eating nuts in a plain form is the best option and eating them in small portions is recommended.

    Vegetables

    Vegetables are a great snack for anyone, diabetics included. Vegetables in their raw form are the best way to eat them because in that form is when they contain the most nutrients. Vegetables help to lower the risk for heart disease and they are high in antioxidants. These antioxidants protect the body from heart disease, stroke and hypertension. To mix raw vegetables up a bit, they can be dipped into various salad dressing, cheeses or hummus. Be careful when choosing dips because some can be high in fat and calories.

    Fruit

    Fruits are a flavorful and healthy choice in snacks. Mangos, bananas, apples and oranges have a high fiber content and a low sugar content. Avocados are high in fiber as well, but they do have a high calorie count. For a snack, fruit is easy to consume as some are ready to go. The ones that are not will take only a few minutes to cut up and prepare to be eaten. Smoothies are a good way to get a few different fruits in a tasty and healthy way.

    Crackers and Chips

    Another option to look into for a fiber filled snacks is chips and crackers. Be sure to check labels though, as there are many out there that are completely unhealthy. Anything baked is a good start as well as low-fat and low-calorie. Many of these crackers can be paired with squares of cheese to add a bit of calcium. Sandwich crackers and saltines can be eaten with peanut butter. The majority of chips are full of fat and grease so an all-natural chip is a good option. Baked chips are starting to become more popular. As with any snack, crackers and chips need to be eaten in moderation.

    I am not diabetic but I always eat a fruit, yougart, or a hand full of trail mix before I work out so I have a very good workout. A personal trainer told me to always eat something before work out to keep stamina high during workout. Fruit is low cal. Nuts are a good source of mono fats and good for you but not so low cal. My Mom keeps crackers and hard candies with her for these diabetic lows. My favorite before work out snack is a banana or granny smith apple. That is my 2 cents!

    you had a banana in yer pocket. ;)

    you could maybe carry around little hard candies. they're small so they're not too high in calories but are total sugar. i think 3 of them is something like 25 calories.

    lol, banana in the pocket. I didn't even think about that. I normally would.

    Its crazy how some you may not think of some of the simplest things. I have to admit, I rarely ever eat before a work out because I always worried it'll slow me down. And I normally eat after all of my work outs. I'll try switching things up a bit and see how things go from there. I have a feeling my doctor is going to suggest the same thing. It makes complete sense to me though now that I think of it.

    You do need to eat some protien at least an hour after your work out also....:-) I have seen personal trainers eating oranges, grapefruits, and apples before working out. When I had a PT she asked me if I was eating anything before workout and I told her know and she told me to start eating a fruit, nutritional bar, low fat cheese etc. She also said for it not to exceed 200 calories also and to make them good calories, meaning no junk food choices. Eating something is better than nothing because you have a better and longer workout.

    As a former diabetic and someone that still has blood sugar issues in the form of insuling resistance..........

    You should always eat fruit with protein or fat. So it slows the blood sugar rush. That is why your getting the highs and lows, because you are getting a surge of insulin when you eat fruit (for instance a banana) and then it drops.

    My main problem that the Dr doesn't like is the fact that my fasting blood sugar levels in the morning are always high. But I can fast the rest of the day and they are low in the afternoon...........

    I am weird!!!
