Will yoga help with hip pain? / Yoga DVD Recs please!

Hi everyone. My mom (49) has been having severe hip pain over the past year and recently found out she will eventually need a hip replacement. She's always been so active (walks 3 mi/ day, on top of being a busy body around the house who can't sit down), so this issue has really brought her down.
She's gained a little weight and just wants to be active again. Doctor has her on some medications that are minimizing the pain, so I'm looking for something that will help ease her into being active and at least just getting some type of movement in her body. Even something thats low-impact but can help with toning, etc. would be great.
Will yoga be good for this? If so, do you have any DVD recommendations? If not yoga.. any other suggestions?
Thank you! :flowerforyou:

I think it would be better to get a physical therapist to recommend activities for your mother, to be honest. If she's scheduled for a replacement, the hip is obviously very badly damaged and some activity could significantly aggravate that.
My guess is that yoga, until she's had good treatment, could be pretty dangerous, especially unsupervised at home. Yoga can be adapted to all sorts of physical problems, but she would need help and guidance from an instructor for this. It's a lot more rigorous than it might first look.
I think probably your safest activity option might be swimming. But I'd still be inclined to check this with a professional first.0 -
My sister in law has big hips and low back pain and was not able to go on a walk more than 5 min. Now she is doing pilates and she said that the improvement are juste incredable. She started Pilates for dummies and now she is using Josee Lavigeur traning (http://www.boutiqueenforme.ca/dvd-livres-josee-lavigueur-dvd-pilates-JLA2000043-fr-pr)
Hope it could help your mom0 -

Good point, I didn't stop to think that yoga could aggravate it. She isn't already scheduled for it, and the doctor said shes going to "eventually" need one.. so I"m wondering if its not that serious just yet- but obviously serious enough to where he sees it wearing down I"m sure. Swimming is a great idea.. I hadn't thought of that. I'm going to tell her to consult with a therapist. Thanks.0 -

I had thought of pilates as well, but thought that might be more strenuous than yoga. I'll look into it for sure though, thank you!0 -
Even as a yoga teacher, I would recommend she go to a physical therapist first.
All videos are out, unless ok'd by the PT. After she gets checked out, then she could find an experienced yoga teacher in her area who could help with her hip pain.0
