I Know I Didn't Eat 52,500 Calories and Other Questions

Bare with me I have a lot of questions!

So I know that a pound is 3500 calories and that weight fluctuates day to day etc. so Idk if its just me but I have one or two (or a few) really terrible binge days and I "gain" weight. I get that it should all just disappear and even out after a few days, it used to, but it has been weeks. I have been eating healthy, exercising 20mins/day, drinking tons of water, the works. I know there's no way in the world, even though I ate tons of food for a few days, that I consumed 52,500cal but its been months and I'm up 15lbs. I don't know if suddenly my metabolism just quit on me or what.

Also, I recently got a polar FT4 and apparently I've only been eating around ~1100 net, so I thought maybe that's why I'm not losing? But I'm doing mostly the same stuff as I used to and I lost weight then, usually a reliable pound a week. The only difference is an increased resistance on the elliptical, but I know I didn't gain 15 pounds of muscle because my pants don't fit haha. I can try getting a net of 13-1400 calories, how long would it take for my body to adjust to that? I did it last week and didn't lose weight and just felt really bloated and over-full. I've been kinda sick this week so I've been less hungry and not netting as much, if you're gonna look through my food logs, so there's the explanation for that.

I understand the whole BMR concept, but it has never been an issue before or hindered weight loss. I guess I'm just confused and in need of guidance.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Okay, don't shoot me but could you be pregnant? The only time I have ever put on 15 pounds in one month was when I was pregnant with my first. If that isn't the case for you then maybe try weighing on a few different scales if possible, maybe yours is broken? Otherwise, I've got nothing for you.

haha, nope! Not pregnant unless it's an immaculate conception! And we have 2 scales, the nice one, that is kind of a liar and will say I'm 1/2 a pound lighter, and the honest one lol.

Eating a lot of carbs can put weight on fast easily. Carbs bind with the water that you drink and is stored in your body. Your muscles and liver both store carbs. If you eat more carbs then your muscles and liver can hold, it spills over and is stored as fat. If you want to binge, try and binge on protein since you just pee the excess food out.

I haven't lost anything in weeks and this last week I'm officially up 3 lbs. My pants don't fit great. I haven't binged but I'm surely eating above deficit. What I can clearly see in my diary though is that my sodium is OFF. THE. CHARTS! So could that be your problem?

I don't know the answer, but I'll tell you my recent experience. I weighed about 204 for EVER. I finally got disgusted and sat down and added up all my calories for the previous 2 months, added up all my exercise calories burned for the previous 2 months, and then calculated, using MFP, what I SHOULD weigh. It said 196.5. Two days later, after not losing for a long time, I went and weighed and it was 196.4!!! I weighed twice, had my husband weigh, weighed on a different scale at the gym.... weighed 3 times the next day... everything confirmed that MFP math had finally sorted itself out and I had whooshed an awesome loss!

Then I gained 3 pounds the 3rd day. 3 MORE pounds the 4th day. By day 6 I was up TEN pounds.

On the 3rd day my husband and I split a box of Russell Stover candies, and I had eaten 8 or 9 of them.

But still!!! It was NOT 35000 calories!!

That was 3 weeks ago. Finally, as of just yesterday, I'm back down to 197, so I'm heading in the right direction now, and I expect, based on how I feel and how my clothes fit, that tomorrow I'll be under 196... I just feel lighter.

But 3 days ago I was ready to give in and put in a 10 pound weight gain on my MFP progress report. In 15 months I've not logged a gain. I've had "gains" that went on for as much as 3 weeks, but this was looking like I had gained weight from where I was TWO months ago!

I was beginning to think it must be something weird about me and my reaction to food or exercise or something.

When my husband and I both log our food, even if we eat the exact same thing and work out for the same amount of time, he logs fewer calories eaten and more burned. And it works for him.

Actually, he probably is burning more than me. But anyway...

So I have no answer, except it could be part of some normal cycle for you. It is part of the reason I try to weigh everyday... I don't want to obsess about weight, but I also want to know about these crazy things so I can try to figure out what's going on!

If you figure it out, please let me know!!!

I missed this the first time and it gets my vote. After my first 4 months of weight loss it just STOPPED. It suddenly started again when I started eating more (from regular stress and stress of not losing) then I figured I better up my calories (was at MFP rec. of 1200 - I'm 5 ft) and that solved my problem.

:noway: I'd be rather alarmed to find extra food in my urine. If this happens I'd probably rush to the ER immediately.

You are 21 and I went back more than a week and saw no booze. Are you just not getting out much or are you forgetting to log it?
  • Your macros seem off to me. I would have a bit less fat and carbs and have that in protein instead. And I would really recommend investing in a food scale to be more accurate; the way you seem to be controlling your intake is too much estimating and I could guarantee that you're having a lot more calories than you think.
Also, the binge eating is screwing with your metabolism. You'll never reach your goal unless you stop binge eating :/ I know it's not easy, but it's the only way. Binge eating majorly messing with your metabolism and you won't get anywhere that way

Not to mention, that would hurt. Like passing many kidney stones.

It's OK. I think you unwrap the food first.

This is why I juice all of my meats before I eat them, for easier passing.

I don't think so! I usually end up around 1800mg on the high side and I drink a lot of water :/

Congrats on 91lbs lost, though! That's something to be proud of, for sure!!

I just don't drink haha. I'll have the occasional champagne or something at a wedding or holiday, but I'm just not much into drinking lol.

What would you recommend for macros? I thought 40/30/30 was kind of the go-to? And I actually do weigh out a lot of my food haha. I weigh meat/poultry, use measuring cups and things for nuts and trail mixes, and measuring spoons for peanut butter and dressings.

And I've been behaving on the binging front, fortunately! Hopefully this won't jinx it!

It's been a while since I've binged last (thank goodness!) and there's no evening out in weight :(

What would a good carb ratio be? I thought 40-50% was decent, but maybe not?

Did you change your macros? They seem good now that I look at your diary :P hahaha And that's good! It's best to weigh out things as much as you can, for accuracy :) I weigh EVERYTHING; even eggs, bread slices, and any little snack that could be measured in cups.

I'm glad to hear that! I know it's hard; believe me. I have a serious problem! :P

I had chicken wings last night and promptly gained 3 lbs "overnight" despite still being under my caloric target. Salt intake can cause the scale to go haywire.

My sodium intake is usually pretty under control, I rarely go over 1800. And I know the whole weight fluctuating thing, but it's been weeks, I think it would have leveled off haha

Have you tried exercising more? Moderate exercise is great for your health, but will do nothing to help burn fat until it gets into the more vigorous category. Go for breathless and sweaty when you do cardio. Also consider adding in resistance training to add in some muscle, too.

Your metabolism could be slower than average, as well. If that is the case, then you need to eat at maintenance for several weeks to get your metabolism back to normal, then cut calories so that you can burn the fat.

I usually only burn around 200 calories a day. I use the elliptical on a moderate resistance for about 20 minutes, and my Polar FT4 is usually between 140-190 burned, so I figured this is "lightly active". If I work out more, don't I have to eat more? Or should I just work out more and net much less? I am trying to eat more, but the more I eat, the more I gain. I increased calories (slowly), and I'm gaining.
I used to be able to drop weight no problem, I don't know where this problem came from!
