Hi, I've only just started MFP, totally loving this site, but I am having problems keeping the sugar and protein down, and having extra trouble trying to use up carbs and calories, I'm not sure on how to open my food diary, but my total calorie allowance is 1200 I think, I'm lucky if I can get to 800-900 most days, and my carbs allowance is atleast 50 g under most days. I'm just so worried it's going to hinder weight-loss due to metabolism slowing down, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

  • I asked a Human Nutritional Specialist who told me it is okay to go over on sugar if I am eating simple sugars from natural sugars like fruits. It was explained to me that these simple sugars are easily recognized and processed by the body. I haven't had any trouble losing weight thanks to MyFitnessPal.

My minimum has to be 1200 calories, but through the message boards, many don't seem to be concerned to go over on protein. I don't have a problem with this because I limit myself to very small meat intakes, 4 oz. of lean beef, 3 oz. of pork, 2 oz. of chicken and 1.4 oz of fish per day targets. (But fish I tend to go over, 1.4 oz of fish isn't satisfying enough no matter how you spread it.) I got those numbers from My Plate produced by the USDA.

800-900 calories seems low to me, my sister wants to lose 2 pounds a week and is only 5'3" and they still had her targeting 1000 calories until she found out she was pregnant and bumped it up to 1200. I always get a warning if I try to stop logging too few calories. If you are at a deficiency, try buying and bagging some almonds or cashews. Both have their health benefits and I have used dark chocolate almonds. Good luck on reaching your goals!

dont stress about going over on protein. and you really should have at least 1200 calories even if you are trying to lose. I know of 3 people that couldnt lose weight until they ate 1200 or more.

You don't need to worry about tracking sugar unless you're diabetic.

MFP has a very low protein goal so please exceed it.

    And eat more.
A lot more, at least 1200 cals plus your exercise calories - that's the way MFP was designed to be used.

Read this and up your cals.

I had the same problem. I saw a nutritionist and the only thing I was told was to make sure the sugar I was eating came from fruits and not junk food. You need said items for your body to function properly and for your workouts as well. You should be ok.

You should be okay if you go over on your protein, it doesn't negatively affect you in any way. Simple sugars are easily processed too. As for the caloric intake, 1200 is the absolute minimum you should intake. Despite what some people think, anything less than that can and likely will stall your metabolism causing you to GAIN weight when you eat. It happened to me. I was taking in 400-600 cal a day and it really caught up with me. That diet rule about don't eat if you're not hungry is a lie. You need to fuel your body the same way you fuel your car, it can't run on nothing. In fact it won't run on nothing. I ended screwing up my thyroid because I wasn't eating enough, plus gaining 50lbs in a year. Its really worth it to eat! Just make good choices!

as long as your sugars are mostly coming from fruits (a small apple takes up over half of my sugar each day), and lean proteins, it shouldn't be a problem going over...i go over, and i have been losing weight just fine. now, i wouldnt go over it you are eating a bunch of processed sugars, obviously....if you want to try to keep them low, maybe cut back on other foods that have them....granola bars, bread, etc. that way, you can eat more fruits. good luck!

Nice, I get to use two of my original copypastas for this question.

Sugar is just a carb. As long as you're eating enough fats and protein, your carbs/sugar aren't important unless you have a medical issue that requires carbs/sugar to be monitored. As long as you're under your calorie goal, you'll lose weight. Some people find that sugar (even from fruit) causes them to have more sugar/carb cravings. If this isn't the case for you there's no need to limit sugar.

MFP sets protein too low. To set your macros, check out this link:

Also, it's hard to have too much protein.

"It has been observed that the human liver cannot safely metabolise much more than 285-365 g of protein per day (for an 80 kg person), and human kidneys are similarly limited in their capability to remove urea (a byproduct of protein catabolism) from the bloodstream. Exceeding that amount results in excess levels of amino acids, ammonia (hyperammonemia), and/or urea in the bloodstream, with potentially fatal consequences,[1] especially if the person switches to a high-protein diet without giving time for the levels of his or her hepatic enzymes to upregulate. Since protein only contains 4 kcal/gram, and a typical adult human requires in excess of 1900 kcal to maintain the energy balance, it is possible to exceed the safe intake of protein if one is subjected to a high-protein diet with little or no fat or carbohydrates. However, given the lack of scientific data on the effects of high-protein diets, and the observed ability of the liver to compensate over a few days for a shift in protein intake, the US Food and Nutrition Board does not set a Tolerable Upper Limit nor upper Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range for protein.[2] Furthermore, medical sources such as UpToDate[3] do not include listings on this topic."

You're actually probably not getting enough protein...MFP's default macro settings are pretty low protein, high carb. It's actually pretty hard to get too much protein...would require a lot of protein supplements.

In RE to sugar, the recommendation for sugar is based on the American Heart Associations recommendation for added/refined sugar. To my knowledge, there is no official recommendation for total sugar. Really, unless you have a medical condition that warrants tracking sugar, I wouldn't bother even looking at it. Manage your macros not your micros.
