Okay so I been working out every day. My dvd is basically circuit training. I bought and started with 2 lb weights it was like I had nothing at all. I switched to 5 and still no soreness. Last 2 days I have used 7 lb hand weights and even double holding them for 14 lbs on one sided reps. Here is my concern.........

1. Shoudn't my arms be sore?
2. Is it possible I am using bad form and not doing it right?
3. Does it have anything to do with maybe my protein isnt high enough?
4. Should I try heavier weight?

Now mind you the rest of my body is sore..my legs from the squats, also my sides, back, tummy even my neck from the other exercises incorporated throughout the dvd (with and without weights). I do feel the burn in my arms very much so when I am working out. That is why I am expecting my arms to be sore the next day.

Thank you in advance any experienced advice greatly appreciated.

    1. can you be a little more specific in the types of movements you're doing and the reps? Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) happens most often when you go to failure (the point where you can't possibly do another rep). The ideal way to burn fat and build muscle is find that perfect balance where you're using the right amount of weight that gets you JUST to that breaking point at 8-10 reps

How many reps did you do with the 7 pounders? (14s?)

    2. It's possible, but let's see where we're at after answering the above

    3. Nothing to do with your protein intake - yours is fine.

    4. see #1

I dont know the names but he does mention the muscles getting worked

One exercise is one sided rows (rowboat?) elbow to ceiling weights in hand close to core and go str8 down and then lift back to core but making sure elbow is reaching for ceiling about sets of 10 I think 2 times

then same as above but with both arms doing it at same time both I am in lunge position switching each leg after sets

another is my favorite one arm goes straight up and the other down and then meet in the middle and back and forth between arms

another is both arms up then to middle onto all the way down back to middle repeat repeat repeat

another is weight start at sides you lift (curls?) to eye level so weights touch then back out to sides that one kicks my *kitten*
then the same as above but one arm goes up to eye lvl and the other just holds the weight at eye level (this one hurts as well lol) then hold them at eye level in a stall of some sort I try not ot bend my arms because it says to keep them straight out bending then in is cheating lol

then there is one i do a side lunge and with weights at core kick the weight straight back then back to core this one is done liek the other single arms then both

for the most part these all have lower body actions going with them as I do them.

all sets are 10 of each 2-3 times I think I remembered them all :ohwell: But with all that crap I should be sore on arms like the rest of my body right?

My goal is to not lose weight too fast and have hanging skin. I would rather be considered heavy and be all muscle. I enjoy working out when I do it it makes me feel good and I like the burn. So my goals are muscles no hanging skin, to build strength so I can start some MMA classes, maintain muscle not lose any, def build endurance. I am just worried by not being sore I am not doing something right or I just may need more weight

DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness; the kind of soreness you get the day after working out) is no indication that you've actually accomplished anything or had a good workout. It feels like you've really done something, but by itself it doesn't mean anything.

This is why I ask what your goals are. Whether what you are doing will help you accomplish your goals, and what you can change to better accomplish your goals, depends on what your actual goals are.

Whether or not you feel sore is frankly irrelevant, unless your goal is simply to feel sore.

Everything you just described sounds like back and shoulder lifts. If you are keeping your arms straight then you aren't using your biceps and triceps (front and back of your upper arm) as the primary muscles being worked. So you'll get some burn in them, but the main work is being done by your shoulders and back.

I have rarely felt soreness in my arms the day after, and I use anywhere from 10-25 pound weights depending on the exercise. This isn't to say that you "shouldn't" feel soreness, I just don't, and I have a trainer who corrects my form, and decides on the weight I am capable of lifting.

make sure your motions are slow and controlled, don't let gravity and momentum do the work for you on either side of the the move. Don't lock your elbows or knees straight either, always have a slight bend in them. Get some 8, 10, or 15lb weights instead of using 2, so you'll have a better grip with only one in your hand at a time. Good luck!

OK, now we're getting somewhere. Your goal appears to be to maintain/gain muscle mass while losing fat. You mention muscles and strength several times, so that's clearly important to you.

I will say straight-up that the program you are doing is not very conducive to that. You are losing weight through diet, but your program amounts to a cardio/endurance program, not a muscle-building one.

I understand this is a home DVD program, and you're doing it with a limited set of very light weights. No one gets strong lifting 7 pounds. Lifting a 7 pound weight until you're tired makes you no more equipped to lift a 100-lb box.

A runner gets better at running by, essentially, running. A swimmer gets better at swimming by swimming. A human being gets stronger by doing things that require strength. Lifting 7 pounds does not require strength. What you are doing is, essentially, random exercise with no actual goal. You're not training. You're not sufficiently taxing your muscles. You're not building strength.

The best thing for you to do would be to switch to a real lifting program, such as Stronglifts. Focus on the core strength-building lifts: the squat, the deadlift, the press, the row, and the bench press. There's even a group on MFP dedicated to women who do Stronglifts. You could keep doing what you're doing, but you won't really achieve your goals, ever. You might end up with lower body fat and a bit of tone, but you will not have developed strength and you will not have lost nearly the quantity of fat you would by doing heavy lifting.

There are bodyweight routines that you can do at home without weights, but they're somewhat inefficient and difficult. You can check them out though - look at Convict Conditioning and similar programs.

But, let me reiterate: those little dumbbells that weigh about the same as a 6-pack aren't going to make you better at anything besides lifting 6-packs.

i actually agree with this completely. none of those movements isolate the biceps or triceps, so that would be why you don't feel soreness there!

do you feel soreness in your shoulders/back at all the day after?

and while jonny's right that soreness isn't entirely necessary, it's still a decent benchmark. though for example, the first time I do a workout in a long time, I'll be really sore the next day, but doing the same workout subsequent times will result in less soreness. This doesn't mean you're getting less of a workout, just that your muscles/ligaments/tendons are more used to the movements and don't experience quite as much trauma.

that said, the above is also a reason to keep your workouts varied so you don't plateau.
