What do you eat when you have hypothyroidism?!

I was diagnosed about a year ago and am taking 100mcg daily. I have made significant changes in my diet and have been having a hard time losing weight. I recently lost 10 lbs and 7 of them came right back. Im curious if anyone else with hypo has made any dietary changes that have worked well for them? Ive read about soy being a bad idea as well as goiterous vegetables. Does anyone have any diet ideas or maybe even a recipe they would like to share? I would really appreciate it. Also please feel free to add me :flowerforyou:

Your hypothyroidism is, with meds, in the normal range? If so, the thyroid issues may not be the problem. I've been diagnosed for a long time and it's controlled with meds. I've been at this only since last August but found that when I've made better choices about food and exercised, pounds came off. Protein and vegetables seem to help. Eating fewer carbs (my downfall) seemed to help. When I've made not as good choices, and/or not exercised, weight stays with me.

More vegetables, fewer chips, was my motto for a while. I've tried to get slightly more sophisticated since. I've spent a lot of time reading the forums to get a feel for what worked for different people. It's been slow going but I have seen a general downward trend in my weight just by doing all the things that you probably already know to do.

Hang in there. You can do it.

My first question would be whether or not the 100mcg has regulated your numbers appropriately. Once you are "normal" you should be able to lose as easily (haha!) as those with uncorrected 'normal' thyroid function - or at least that has been my experience. Is there any other possible cause? A food allergy maybe?

My last labs were still a bit elevated so I was bumped up to 100mcg. Next Friday I'm seeing my GYN and Im going to ask her to check my TSH level while she does other bloodwork (this way I dont have to get it done twice) and hopefully this dose is the one that will finally make me normal.. well at least when it comes to labs.

Low sugar, No sugar. Any suger we eat...is automatically stored as fat. It is my biggest struggle to cut sugar out. Also, just read a report that people with Hypothyroidism should focus their workouts moreso on strenghth/circuit training, and not so much on super long cardio sessions (like running 10 miles a day)...it affects our T3, which in turn makes our body store fat as well. Hope this helps!

Hi all, I am 47 and about 12 weeks into a whole different life style. There is alot of info on this disorder and I think its fair to say that we need to really log and track what works for us. We do build muscle faster if we have a high testosterone level mine is through the roof. For me unfortunately its only been in the past decade that people started recognizing this disorder. Strength training is the more important for most of us and sugar and white flours and carbs and even some vegetables are the devil ... So with all this being said log well and just start seeing what works ... Please share your success with others people just dont know how hard it is to lose with all this going on. However it is possible... On may 1 st I think I am going to try a 30 day sugar fast and see what happens I am nervous about it but I do still eat sugar I dont do any articial sweeteners they are not an option for most of us according to my internist. WOW we have so many options. However I do believe it can be done! The thing about not doing it is it will increasingly make your life worse. I also believe our cravings are possibly worse because of it. Hopefully i will see some before and afters from you soon.
  • I have hypothyroidism and have had for.. 12 years? (I'm 21). Anyways, I think it's a lot harder for us to loose the weight but definetely not impossible. I am 5ft 1, used to weigh 134 lbs (which for someone my height is a lot) and I managed to go down 30 pounds. Keeping my weight as it is is difficult, but I eat out on the weekends and have pasta/rice and stuff, though only for lunch not dinner. I keep my dinners quite tiny actually, but have big breakfast and lunch. I think that's the way to do it:)

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's and hypothyroidism about 18 years ago and just recently found out the best information available to myself on a Facebook page called "Thyroid Sexy" and the book called "The Thyroid Diet". We are not suppose to have processed sugar, gluten, soy, foods high in estrogen (broccoli, almonds, flax seeds, many more) and it's a hard change but as a former Pepsi addict, I was able to kick the habit once I learned it was the sugar causing me physical pain. It's all about lifestyle changes not 'diet'. I wish you best of luck :)

Oh, I need to add ....

I had a terrible time with gaining weight and not being able to lose it. Once I went on "My Fitness Pal" to track calories, fitness, water intake, etc., I was able to lose over 40 pounds in just under four months! I haven't felt so good in 20 years - being nearly symptom free!! :D

My screen name says it all...................I take Armour Thyroid and have steadily reduced my dosage down to 1 grain, which is equivalent to 60 mcg of Synthroid over the past year.

Adopting the Paleo lifestyle is the best thing I have done for my health overall.

I've been under my calories for over a month and I ride my bike regularly. Im going to start May 1 because I have a lot of family visiting and I have enough going on with that. I'll focus on one thing at a time or I'll drive myself crazy.

Thats not to say I won't be watching what I eat and exercising.. Im just not going to make any drastic dietary changes until I can focus on myself.

I don't know anything at all about the Paleo thing but I'm going to look into it.
