Burning 1700 calories daily by working out....

I'm supposed to eat 1578 calories a day to lose 2 lbs per week. If I burn 1700 calories by workouts and only eat 3000 calories instead of 3293 will I lose weight and how much weight should I lose each week?

Good lord, how much exercise are you doin??
  • 1700 calories????

Is that what MFP tells you when you log it? I'm guessing that's not based off a heart rate monitor...

MFP tends to overestimate calorie burn from exercise, so no, you don't want to eat back all of those. Otherwise you'd be overeating. If you have an HRM that is telling you that's what you're burning, then I want to know what exercise you are doing.

You would be creating a deficit of 293 cals which would give you just over 1/2 lb per week loss based on the 500cal deficit per day for 1lb.

However exercising that much everyday is likely to be counter productive and wouldn't be recommended. For most people a 1700 cal burn would require at least 3 hours of intense exercise. So as others have said, what exercise are you doing?,

I better get a heart rate monitor then.....MFP says 90 min of circuit training is 1070 cal and I usually burn (based on machines at the gym) 600-800 cal on the treadmill and elliptical +weights. I was wanting to do "2 a day" because I'm not seeing results anymore.

I had my boyfriend get me a HRM for Christmas a couple years ago. Love it!! He got me the Polar FT7. I asked for the red/silver.. =) This is the kind I got and where he ordered it from.. comes with free shipping. =) It only took 4 days for it to arrive.. Hope it's helpful!

Does that burn more calories or just build muscle and how many extra calories do I eat based on 1400-1500 cal diet. Will I loose fat? I have 60-70 more lbs to go...

Sounds like too much exercise. Instead of eating 3000 and burning 1700 for a net of 1300 why not eat 2000 and burn just 700? Which also leaves you with a net of 1300. You can spend the extra time on something else.

peeking at your diary... eat more protein!! it says you had 24g today. you should be aiming for .8-1g per lb of lean body mass.

You cannot build muscle on a calorie deficit - what it WILL do is preserve the lean mass you have now and you will look leaner and more fit once the layers of fat are gone. :)

I'm with this guy - stop doing so much exercise and work on strength training. Cardio really should only be like twice a week, for like an hour max each time.

Oh, and yes, please get more protein in! 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight (or lean body mass if you can calculate that) is best.
  • What you need to factor in as well though, is is that level of activity sustainable? If you are depending on your activity level to lose weight what will happen when you have to moderate or just haven't time for that amount of exercise? Rely on your diet to create the deficit first and foremost then you will be set up for good habits in the long run that fit in with your life.

Why is your goal 1270 calories, if you plan on eating 3000?

I'm gonna take a wild guess and suggest that the reason you're not seeing results anymore is that you've cut back your calories too much and over exercised, creating too much of a deficit. When you do that, you'll lose weight quickly for a short period of time, and then you hit a wall, which is what it sounds like has happened.

Is your food diary accurate? If so, you really need to eat more food. You were well below 1000 calories on most of the days you actually tracked. Having something like an orange for dinner? That's not dinner...that's barely a snack.

I see you say you've lost 31 pounds in 11 weeks--that's a lot of weight in a relatively short period of time. I don't want to be mean or discourage you, but it sounds like you're going about this whole weight loss/fitness thing in a really unhealthy, extreme way. You've got a bunch of kids and a husband--your goals should focus on being healthy and happy, so you can enjoy your family. Don't do this to yourself.

Eat an appropriate number of calories, slow down the weight loss machine, exercise a reasonable amount--NOT TWICE A DAY. Not 1700 calories worth of "burn" or whatever. Just chill out a bit, eat better, measure and track everything, and exercise reasonably. You'll be happier with your body in the end, and you'll feel better.

Check out the threads here on MFP called "In Place of A Road Map" and do some reading as to how you can eat a reasonable amount of food and exercise in a sane manner and lose fat.

    Be well.... :flowerforyou:

Thanks everyone! You all have confirmed some answers for me. I do like lifting better anyway. Aerobics and Cardio are boring as all get out :) I'll just max my time with the weights, eat more protein, keep a better diary (I never go over my calorie limit, but I do get lazy in tracking it on here. Especially since my computer locks up every single time I go to my diary)

3000 calories is way over what anyone is supposed to eat in one day

I alternate days of lifting heavy and running. On my long run I can burn over 2000 calories, but that's only once a week. If your able to keep that up, Id suggest not just giving up all your cardio.
I also don't eat back all 2000 calories on that day, I have to spread it over a few.

Try not to see strength training and separate exercise to burning calories, you do burn calories and although you will buld muscle you wont look like a man! A brilliant book is "the new rule of lifting for women" http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-New-Rules-Lifting-Women/dp/1583333398/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366376078&sr=8-1&keywords=lifting+for+women

It gets rid of a lot of misconceptions about weight training, being 'toned' is basically building muscle and its much more efficient way of working out.

When you say youre not seeing results, what results are you looking for? We might be able to help more?

Also, my aim is to get smaller opposed to weigh less, although weighing less is a good indicator of that. But if you are getting stronger and smaller and more 'toned' you may also weigh a little more, because muscle weighs more than fat. Do you measure yourself too? I lost 2 inches in the time that I had only lost a few pounds!

ETA- I just had a sneaky peek at your profile and my god you have done well!! 29lb in 10 weeks is fantastic, so dont worry if your loss slows down, it will start to xx

Maybe it might be better to aim for a smaller loss - say 1lb a week. Losing quicker can be counter-productive.

Thanks so much....I have 60-70 lbs to lose. I measure once a week. I don't see any loss in my belly and hips anymore. My waist gets smaller all the time. 35" waist and 49" hips!!!

If you are basing your exercise calories on the machines and MFP, they are going to be way off. I have a HR monitor and when I put in my calories, I have to adjust my time because MFP will try to give me so much more than I have actually burnt. I would only use about 2/3 of what MFP has said. As for the machines, I would do the same, if not a little more. I don't think you are burning 1700 a day. Probably closer to 1000-1200, even then it depends on how hard you are working and what your heart rate is.

Thanks! That helps a lot. I know 1700 is extreme...more like a "what if" to try and understand the whole burn/eat mechanics :)

I can burn 1700 calories on my long runs. I generally won't eat all of those calories because I need to deduct what I would normally have spent in an hour. Plus, I find if I go under a little, it helps with my weight loss. This is what works for me. Everyone is different and you have to find what works for you. It takes a lot of trial and error to figure it out.

What settings did you use to determine your base calorie amount to lose 2 pounds per week? That would be a 1000 calorie deficit per day making your sedentary maintenance calories over 2500...seems off for a 30 year old with only 60-70 pounds to lose. Just wanted to make sure that exercise isn't being double-counted in there somehow.

Use your diet for weight control; exercise for fitness. Trying to sustain a reasonable calorie deficit with exercise is very difficult to do and often results in over training. It is better to build the deficit into your diet...then you can set fitness goals that are independent of calorie burn...then you will be much happier and enjoy your exercise much more...you will also find yourself with a sustainable diet and fitness plan.

This is not true. My maintenance calorie requirements as a very active 5'8'' woman is around 2800. You cannot say this as a blanket statement, calorie intake varies greatly from one person to another.

And ''minus'' exercise from 1575?! No. She should be eating exercise calories on top of the 1575.

1700 calories burned daily working out is really dubious.
