I see a spot...

Yesterday morning suddenly I noticed something strange in my sight. As I finished running and headed back home, a strange, whitish spot appeared in the field of view of my right eye. If the eye was a clock, where the pupil (and attention focus) lies in the center, and the 12 points to the sky, the spot would be at 10.30. If you stare for 2-5 seconds into a source of light, like a lamp or the sun, and then turn away, the source of light will "stick" and you will still see it for some more time. Exactly that kind of spot I am seeing, but I can tell you that I did not stare at the sun or any ultra-bright light so as to have that effect for more than 12 hours. If I turn and roll the eyes, the spot moves with me. Sometimes it goes away, or probably I forget about it--sometimes it is really annoying.

I measured my blood pressure, and it was a little below normal but nothing really dramatic.

Now I don't know if I should skip today's workout; certainly I will ask for some medical help. Has anybody had this problem before? I am not diabetic, hypertense, etc. and my vision is 20/20.

Any comments will be appreciated. thank you!

Could be a 'cotton wool spot' Definitely work checking in with your eye doctor in case it becomes something more!

Me personally I would consider not working out and checking in with my eye doc first.

A few months ago my son had a spot suddenly show up in his vision. We've been to 2 doctors and 2 specialists now. The original diagnosis for the spot was "macular hole" Not a good thing to have, and often requires surgery to repair. The last specialist was a pediatric specialist who believes that my son has something similar to a blister on the back of his eye. We are now watching for changes to see if further treatment is needed.

You should probably go see an eye doctor to have it checked out. Macular holes are scary and dangerous!!!
    Good luck

I would give an eye doctor a call... and ask if you should workout in the meantime.

    Call your doc.
And I would call now. If it's already lasted for 12 hours.
Your eyesight is not something that you want to mess around with....
    Just saying...
  • Warning! Do NOT go to an optometrist, go to an Ophthamologist. There is a HUGE difference between the two even though both are referred to as "eye doctors"; one is a doctor (medically trained) and the other isn't. Your issue can be the start of a serious problem. My husband, an Ophthamologist, sees patients all the time who put off coming to his clinic until it is too late. I don't know what your diagnosis is but please go in as soon as possible.

I have broken blood vessels (I have extra vessels due to an issue with SLE) in the back of my eye, but those spots will move a little. When it happens, if I exercise, I tend to cause more vessels to break -- and it is a lot easier to skip the exercise and be able to see (if this is your issue--definitely see a doc no matter what). Anyway, skip the workout at least until you know what it is.

    Good luck.
  • My sister had the same thing happen to her, and it was called a floater... it's where a blood vessel in your eye pops and then a piece is floating around. In her case it wasn't serious, and there was nothing to be done about it...
but I would def go to an eye doctor just to make sure... Good luck!

Definitely call your eye doctor IMMEDIATELY! I work for an eye doctor and you want to make sure you do not have a detached retina. If your retina is detached, you risk losing your eyesight FOREVER. Its not something to mess around with. Have it checked out and it could just be a floater but better safe than sorry.

I get those occasionally too. Mine is nothing to worry about. It's pretty common when you exercise strenuously. I get them when I feel like I'm gonna pass out too. Mine go away within about a half hour though. If yours are lasting a lot longer after sufficient rest you probably should get it checked out but don't freak out over it until you talk to a doctor.

I have "floaters" but they are not as you have described. Actually what you described is what I get before a migraine. Anyway, I wouldn't work our and I would get in to the Dr. ASAP. there are a number of things that could be going on and well, you don't want to take any chances. Good luck! Please keep us updated.
