Can a weekly adjustment offset a single day of overeating?

If you eat too much on a single day, can you lower your calories for the rest of the week to make up for it? Does your body even work that way? What if the adjusted number for the rest of the week is below your BMR?

I attended a party on Saturday where I chose to go over my calories for the day. I estimate that I exceeded my usual daily 1700 calorie goal by about 1300 calories. Having done the math, if I eat at 1400 calories for the rest of the week, it would make up for the additional calories of that one day, but I don't know if a week long calorie adjustment can actually make up for one day.

Anyone have any input?

    Yup, works.
What matters is the amount of calories you eat per week.

I often cycle my calories if I know I'm having a party or so on the weekend.
Going over your goal for 1 day a week wont ruin your progress, tho. So take it easy. :)

Yes, ensuring you reach an average over time is more important than a one day slip-up. However, with an extra 300 calorie deficit you might find you're hungry and set yourself up for another big-eating day. Just go back to 1700 goal as normal and you'll carry on losing. I even find the odd feast day results in a weight loss that week without any adjustment.
