Training for a 5K: Help/Tips?

SO I want to do The Color Vibe 5k. It's in 2 months (June 22nd). I've never done a 5k before and I'm not much of a runner (but I do run). I just don't want to end up dying or something in the process of it. They permit walking, but I'd like to run. So what is a good routine to follow in preparation?

Here is the link if you want to sign up in your town: http://thecolorvibe.com/

    Do C25K

You can download an app for your phone (I didn't) or get the free MP3 podcasts from the NHS UK site. I used the podcasts and they can be found here: http://www.nhs.uk/Tools/Pages/couch-5K-running-plan.aspx

The basic outline of the running plan can be found here:

I'm doing a 5K run on the 23rd June :). I'm preparing by going for runs 3/4 times a weak, trying to improve my time from the last run. I downloaded mapmyrun which is a really good app for tracking runs. It's also free :)

The C25k app on my phone changed my life. It starts you alternating 1 min of running and 90 secs of walking. It keeps increasing until you are running a full 5k. I couldn't run a mile (or even half a mile) now I can run 2 miles without stopping and I'm not even done with the training program. Plus it's free!!!

Ok, I am doing the Color Run in Atlanta in September. It will be my 3rd one. I just ran no less than once a week and I placed 2nd in my age group at my last 5k. Not a whole lot of training required, just run in your free time!!.

Thanks everyone! I'm thinking about getting that Zombies, Run! 5K app. Has anyone else tried it?
  • Keep your pace on the slower side as you try to up your distance. Couch to 5k is great too. If you can already run some, start it partway through.

I'm doing that, currently on week 5. It is sooo fun and I've gotten farther in it than I have with another c25k app I had. I highly recommend it!
