Dawna, I thought I had quoted your post about where to get quinoa but apparently I failed.
I get it at the "fancy" grocery store in our town, lol. None of the regular places carry it.0 -
My fiance claims that he gets indigestion every time we eat whole wheat pasta. He wants switch back to white pasta. Do you guys think that something about wheat pasta could really be giving him indigestion, or do you think he's just being difficult (like me LOL)?
Indigestion is a good chance, but perhaps he just wants the white pasta but either doesn't want to hurt your feelings or has told you before that he prefers the white pasta but you have ended up arguing and he is trying to avoid that.
What is he like with stuff like bread, does he prefer white or is he not bothered what sort of bread he eats?
He prefers white bread but he's switched to wheat. No other wheat products give him any problems.0 -
how often do you do you eat pasta? is it really something that you can't give on? call it an act of love, but let him keep the pasta he likes.
when my husband and i were first married, i drove me CRAZY that he wanted a different toothpaste than the one i wanted to buy (his left a blue ring in the sink), but over time (and several arguments) i realized that making him happy was more important than my having to clean a blue sink ring. now i buy his toothpaste and my tootpaste and we use different products. sometimes it is okay to let them have something that is comforting to them even if you know it is not the *best* product for them.
good enough is sometimes good enough, ya know?
that is an excellent point! My family has all these health problems: my dad and both his parents have type 2 diabetes. My dad had triple bypass open heart surgery before he was 50 years old. I try to stick to whole grain, low fat foods, but that's because my lfe literally depends on it. My fiance's family are all perfectly healthy.
So I guess from now I'll make him his own pasta0 -
I 2nd the suggestion of making two types of pasta if you really want whole wheat pasta and your fiance insists on white. Pasta is so easy to boil up that it shouldn't be too difficult to do.0

I do miss it but find that a portion is so small it just leaves me wanting more anyway . . . so I've just gotten used to life without pasta.
Try spaghetti squash instead
This is what I've been doing. I am a HUGE pasta addict and probably ate noodles in some form at least twice a week before I decided to get healthy. Now when I get a pasta craving, I just use spaghetti squash, light Ragu, and plenty of veggies and it is just as tasty and filling as the real thing.0 -
Haha, the title of this topic made me giggle.
He may not be fibbing. A few weekends ago we had some friends over for dinner, and I made this super healthy homemade lasagna using whole wheat pasta, which both my husband and I are used to. But, my friends had some serious bathroom issues afterwards  (ok i shouldn't laugh, haha) Not at our house, thank goodness. But, she asked me later what we used for ingredients. She had recently took a "food science" class at college as part of her culinary arts class, and she had learned that sometimes when people aren't accustomed to whole wheat foods, their stomachs goes crazy at first. Almost like if I were to eat a huge bowl of bran. I get some seriously instant bathroom issues when I eat it. :blushing: Now, I don't know if there's a whole lotta truth to that, since I'm not an expert on food science, and I don't know her sources, but I thought I would share the experience. But, like others have said, he could be allergic too? I use Healthy Harvest pasta, and my husband can't tell the difference. My mom (who is SO anti healthy food, it makes me mad) also didn't recognize the difference when she came over for dinner.
Along the same lines, and I could be off since we don't eat wheat anything in our house much, I was thinking maybe there is more fiber in the whole grain/whole wheat pasta over the processed refined cra....er...white pasta. So maybe thats what is causing his stomach to do that?0 -
KicklikeaGIRL - I shop at Kroger which is just a regular grocery store and I can find quinoa in the organic aisle :happy:0

It's not that big of a difference in calories or fat.
I wouldn't put of a fight over pasta.
Give the guy some regular good pasta!
Another thing I noticed when I eat whole wheat pasta is I get fuller on less so if he's trying to eat the same amount of food, he could get heart burn from that.0 -
I wouldn't think he'd be lying about that. There isn't much difference in taste when cooked for him to make a big deal of it. Or maybe thats just me...I can't tell a difference in taste. Just gives me more of a full feeling with whole wheat.. Could just be more fiber than he's used to. I have problems sometimes when I eat fiber rich foods.0

possible he has some form of gluten intolerance and the whole wheat one you use has a higher gluten content? Does he complain about the same difference in breads?0

We have a regular bulk food store called The Bulk Barn, and I buy quinoa by the pound..you can even have it as a breakfast cereal, cinnamon and rasins and some fibre one on top..very good!0

There's your answer then. He PREFERS white bread and he like white pasta. Give him what he wants, it is his body and he is entitled to enjoy his grub. If you don't he will continue doing what he is doing. You can never force things on people and the more you do that the more they will shove back0 -
Reminds me of when my hubs and I first met. He said he was 'allergic' to pork, yet could eat ham, bacon....and so on:huh: .
So I (being the smart azz 21 yr old know it all that I was) decided to make him meatloaf with 1/2 ground pork to prove him wrong.
Had a lovely dinner (burned as usual, but not too bad once you removed the black part) and retired to the living room with my mom and hubs. Suddenly he gets a weird look on his face and rushes to the bathroom where he stayed the entire night.
Turns out, he WAS allergic to pork! :laugh:0
