I won't be able to go into work for in between 1-4 weeks... Do I tell them the truth and risk being judged or do I lie?

You get a doctor's note and take a medical leave of absence. They don't need to know the reason.0

If you've been there long enough, take FMLA, by law they have to take you back.0

maybe they have no one else to confide in.0 -
Tell them you were sick. Don't explain. If anyone really presses you, lie and make up an illness. Don't even tell the coworkers you "trust". They may not judge you directly, but word travels fast and that isn't information you want people knowing, you never know when it could come back to bite you in the butt.
Also, good luck with your recovery.0 -
My question is, how do you have online access right now if you're in a "psych ward", to use your terminology? If you're in a mental hospital they generally don't allow PCs and don't have public computers. They don't even let you have a cell phone.
If they let you go home and you are simply doing a PHP program, why are you not allowed to return to work?
Either way, you need to explain to them what happened. You're getting help, and that's good, but don't lie. That just leads to more lies down the road if complications arise.0 -
Glad to hear you are still around. I would ask your doctor or the hospital for a note saying that you need time off for a medical reason. They most likely won't have to go into detail. Good luck with your recovery, again glad to hear you're still around.0

Most others have given good advise. My only contribution is to say I hope you get good help and recover well and dont ever feel like you have to try this again. Best of luck!0 -
I agree on getting a doctor's note..there is no need for you to explain your situation to them. On another note, I wish you all the best. I've lost several loved ones to suicide and if you ever need to talk please don't hesitate to contact me. I sent you a friend request!0

I have actually been in this situation. I was in a facility for a little over two weeks. I obtained a letter stating that I was under the care for Dr. So-and-So from this date to that date. No one can ask you for more information than that.0

It's a private health issue.0

It is a privacy thing. It's up to how comfortable you are with people knowing your business. They don't have to know and you not telling them ISN'T lying.0

Not sure if trolling, or serious.0

^^^ this
I had time off work due to mental illness a few years back. I got a doctor's note, it simply said "stress related illness". Actually I told my employer the truth, they were very sympathetic about it. Attitudes can vary from excellent and clued up, to morons who don't have a clue... but in any case the doctor won't put all the details down on the sick note, if colleagues ask you can say you don't want to talk about it. But you're not required to give details, just a doctor's note.0 -
I do not know you, but you are a special and unique creation of God. Value yourself..I know it can be hard in life sometimes. Try to focus on the beauty of the world that is all around you because though hard to see at times, it indeed exists. Please take the positive that was said here leave the negative behind where it belongs
and get better. You are loved!0 -

Be careful.. saying the word God tends to bring out a whole new subject.0
