So...if I am having oatmeal for breakfast and the serving size in MFP is 1/2 cup...does that mean before cooking or after cooking? I feel like it's a stupid question...but was standing there scratching my head this morning. Anyone...Bueller...Bueller...Bueller?

look at the label for the product you are eating, it will tell you. 90% of the time, serving sizes are listed for uncooked product. most packages will also give you information for a suggested preparation. for example, cheerios has information for just the cereal and then another column for cereal + x amount of milk. for oatmeal, the serving size is for 1/2 cup of uncooked oats. if you just make it with water, you're not changing the nutritional value at all, you're just increasing the volume of the food because the water makes the oats plump up. if you add milk, etc., to your oats, then add in the values for those separately.

so essentially, dump 1/2 cup uncooked oats in a bowl, and that's what the nutrition facts are for. hope that helps!

Ugh...I wasn't looking at the package...I dumped the oatmeal into a ziplock for easier storage. So...I was using the 1/2 cup serving size that popped up in MFP when I entered oatmeal for breakfast. I presume they are talking in ready to eat terms, and not pre preparation. The good news is I used water...not milk. Logical...makes sense...thanks! I tend to over think things...

Well, raw, rolled oats are 1/2 cup dry serving. Steel cut oats are 1/4 cup dry serving.
