TDEE HELP! 30,000 steps a day: sedentary? lightly active?

So, when I joined MFP, I figured I was 'sedentary' - I'm a student, and don't work out because of health issues.

However, I downloaded the Striiv pedometer app for a bit of fun and found out that I walk between 13-15 miles a day, just walking around! I don't have a car or take public transport so the ONLY way these steps can be 'counted' is if I walk them (no miscounting). I checked the app while walking vs while sitting, and it seems fairly accurate. I correctly entered my height and stride length. My average number of steps is around 28,000 a day.

How many 'extra' calories would I burn doing this? Am I lightly active? My BMR is right around 1200.

I'd say you are moderately active. Figure, on the safe side, 75 calories a mile/2000 steps.

WHOA - that is not sedentary! On my very best days I don't even get 1/2 that many steps. My goal is 10,000 and I only reach it about 1/2 the time. I'd say moderately active.

Thanks! So, if my BMR is 1,200, I add 75 calories x let's say 13 miles = 975 calories = 2,175 calories to maintain?! That seems way too much! :O

Sounds about right, actually! When I was going to college (oh, so many aeons ago!), the school was on a hill and everyone walked everywhere, too. I'm 5'3", weighed 98 pounds soaking wet at that time - I could eat over 3,000 calories a day and never gained an ounce. So yeah, I'm thinking you'll be fine at that. :)
  • I was set at moderately active (the second most active setting) for most of April... I walk 10-12000 steps a day at work, plus I run fairly often. So my step count averages 15000ish. Even set at a higher activity level, with my fitbit, I was still getting massive calories adjustments (500-1000 some days). I ate most of those calories back and still lost weight.
I'm 5'10" and 245 so my BMR is naturally high, but i'd say 30000 steps a day counts for a higher activity level than sedentary. Most definitely.

According to my Fitbits premium statistics doing around 13,000 steps qualifies you for being in about the top 3 percent of fitbit users. So 30,000 steps would truly be elite. Are you sure that your average is correct? Every day? Agree with others it is not sedentary. Incidentally if you invest in a Fitbit (the Zip costs around $60) and synchronize with Mfp it will calculate calories expended on a daily basis if you leave the settings to sedentary
