Firmness definitely. If it isn't firm enough you can't really get on it with enough pressure to relieve tension.

Looking at the picture of you in the green tracksuit you seem to already have the requisite flexibility:

Personally, I invested in a black (hard) half-length one from the beginning. I suffered no discomfort and it seems to have retained it's firmness nicely, which I believe cannot always be said for other colours.

As a beginner you should be looking to get your hands on as many as possible to see what you might like.

Avoid the ones that you can use freely at your local gym as well.

I hear they have been handled by multiple users and are best avoided.

Perhaps I should ask my running friends who have one if I can have a roll around on theirs to see what suits before I commit myself to one.

Again, serious question, but innuendo unavoidable:

Do I need to start up gently and build up to a more rigorous rolling, and does it have to hurt to be doing me good?

Yes, yes it does. Just be sure to work out a safe-word ahead of time.

I love this feed! But what the hell is a foam roller?? I guess you don't need toys if you have a partner that knows how to use his equipment... but I feel like I may be missing out?

Yes, it is going to hurt, that is unavoidable, but it will get better. Yes, you need to work up to it slowly and apply less pressure at first.

Firmness is where it's at, so it gets in all the right places.
