You can have all three, but if you dont know how to use it, it would still not get the job done.

Or are position and action all that matters?

I need a foam roller to iron out some hip and knee niggles from running and there are so many factors to take into consideration!

I think length and girth are a matter of personal preference, but you're not going to get much done without firmness.

    this post is EVERYTHING lol

Oh... and to answer your question, in order of importance:-

    1) Firmness
    2) Girth
    3) Length

The main thing length does is allow you to ignore or not worry about good positioning cause the length covers it all. I hope this helps.

This is not entirely true.......as there are some positions in which the length jeapordizes internal organs

it'a really more a matter of technique than anything. I've had thin rollers with moderate length that got the job done better than the thicker, longer rollers of years past. Technique is everything! I find no matter what style I have, I can make it work with a few tweaks.
