So obviously i love me my casein and am gonna take it on weight training days, but on non-training days...is it really necessary???

I haven't looked for myself, but that research seems potentially shady to me. Not saying it isn't legit, I'm just skeptical. (It's the timing aspect that seems particularly suspect to me.)
And necessary? I'd say no...but if you have the calories left, there are much worse things to consume than additional protein...and I'd guess additional protein in your diet (whenever consumed) will help you with your current goals.0 -

Casein is absolutely not needed and marketed as this miracle overnight taking protein powder that is going to deter your gains as you are sleeping and can't eat. As long as you meet your macro and micro nutrients for the day (calorie numbers), get plenty of rest and adequate amounts of water you'll be good to go.0 -

it doesnt have to be casein but any slow digesting complex carb is great for your last meal or a few hours before you go to sleep.0

agreed. i get all my macros and i fast for at least 16 hours sometimes 18 and once a week for 24 hours and i loose no gains. its all about calories in.0 -
