    I lost my first 30 pounds in about six months.

    I ate whatever I wanted, but limited my portion sizes.

    I put my data into the MFP app and set my weight loss at 1 pound per week. I was very careful to record my food accurately and stay under my calorie limit.

    BINGO!! I'm a 32 year old male with a desk job. I work out about 3 days/week because that's all my time allows. I've lost 40 pounds since Feb 2 of this year.

    I lost 32 lbs in 6 mths (20 since I joined here) calorie counting and definitely portion control was how I started. When I joined MFP I looked at the reports you can pull up and started tweaking my diet slowly. Exercises wise before MFP I did alot of calisthenics (body weight) and cardio... right know I'm doing 30DS for the second time with 8 lbs dumbbells (1st time was with 3 lbs).

    Basically got rid of processed foods and after that ate whatever I wanted, just following MFP guidelines. I go to the gym 3 days a week for an hour with a combination of bike riding the other 3 days a week leaving a day off to relax. I was averaging 3 pounds a week but it slowed down a little the last 2 weeks, to 2 pounds a week.

    It varies so much. Years ago, I lost 35 lbs in just about 2 months or so. Before getting pregnant, with MFP, exercise, and diet, I lost 24 lbs in a year and a half. I have thyroid issues now. It's just not possible for me to lose like I used to.

    When I did lose that weight before though, I ate all the same stuff, just about half of what I was eating before. I had a very active job too, I worked in nursing.
  • I tried to eat "clean". Which is basically staying away from as much processed food as possible. I ate lots and lots of fruit. I also ate in a certain order for each meal: crap loads of water (It helps you fill your stomach and not eat as much), fruit (fruit is very acidic, so eating fruit first will kick start your metabolism and help digest the rest of your food), starch (starch is very yummy and kind of addicting, which is why you don't want to eat it first or last, and that fruit will help break down those complex carbs), then vegetables (they alkalize your pH levels, and they are generally tasteless, so they help reduce your appetite), rarely have dessert.

    For exercising, I just stayed in my room and did lots of jump rope, sit ups, and lunges. Really, I only exercised for thirty minutes almost everyday. Figure out what works for you. Now, I tend to ride my bike, do sit ups, and push ups. Find out what works for you.

    I lost 25 pounds in less than three months. This was before I joined MFP.

    to lose my weight, I started with my fitness pal and a drug store pedometer. I logged all I ate, cut out between meal snacks and was almost religious about portion size. I made sure to drink at least 8 cups of water/day. Eventually I upgraded to a fitbit ultra (last Father's day).

    For me, the cutting out of between meal snacks seemed to be the big change. it is amazing how quickly a muffin here, candy bar there will add up. I think the reason I had success was none of my changes seemed huge at the time, and over time they became habit. Now, I will have an occaisional snack, but, I still log everything and since I'm running ~15-20 miles each week, I've built in the ability to add a few extra calories here and there. For what its worth, my weight has fluctuated within a 4 pound window over the past 3 months, usually just a pound or two either way each week (I also have a fitbit aria scale that I use weekly to weigh myself - always straight out of bed, after the 1st morning trip to the restroom, to try to reduce variation due to bladder/colon fullness). Apologies if the last part was way too much information.

    I lost 50 my first year, another 17 the following year, and have maintained since then. I cut way back on sugar, bread, pasta, rice and potatoes, increased vegs a million-fold. Lots of water and lots of walking. Even started jogging a wee bit.

    I have lost multiple times and have fallen off the wagon multiple times. My yo-yo is lose 40, gain 35, lose 40, gain 50, lose 30... so on and so forth! I am determined to do it better this time! I can't be so severe or I will go off the wagon again!
    This round, I had lost 5 lbs before I started using MFP again. So, I have lost 30 lbs this time. I have tried to eat non processed foods... in other words... I eat FOOD... not food like things from a box in the freezer or aisles. I try to eat the biggest portion of food from veggies, then protein, then fruit, and then whole grain. I thought I couldn't run... come to find out, I just needed to learn to run and practice it often. I try to run in intervals 5-6 times a week. My intervals were run for 30 seconds and walk for 1 minute...30 minutes. Now I am up to run for 4 minutes and walk for 1 minute...35-45 minutes. The more often I run, the better my ability to focus and actually get further than before. The lbs came off easily at first, but now average about 2-3 per month. It was frustrating, but now my mindset is "as long as I go down and not up"! I log EVERYDAY! Without fail, I log daily! Even if I end up splurging and eating 5 guys and fries, I log!

    Oh and TONS, Gallons!!! of water EVERYDAY! I started out taking my weight and drinking half the lbs in ounces of water... 200 lbs...100 oz of water everyday! I have slowed down and that is probably why my weight has slowed down on coming off!

    Can you share with me what you did what you ate type of exercises you did to achieve your loss? Also how long did it take?

    It took me a year and a half to lose 88 pounds by doing mostly cardio and eating what I wanted, but in moderation.

    I started out just counting calories. I ate what I wanted as long as it was within my limit. If I wanted to eat more, I would exercise first to "earn" more calories. And I had one cheat day a week. I lost 30 pounds in six months doing that.
    Then I started working out three days a week for 30-45 minutes. I just did cardio. I also started eating a bit cleaner by swapping my faves for healthier options (hummus instead of mayo on my sandwiches or as a veggie dip instead of ranch, plain Greek yogurt with fruit instead of the Yoplait stuff, protein style burgers with no cheese or mayo). That helped me lose another 30 pounds in six months.
    I started to struggle at this point and gained back some weight so I splurged on a personal trainer for three months (half hour sessions, three days a week). He put me on a special meal plan, had me do more intense cardio (Spinning classes, Stairmaster, walking on the treadmill at a 15-30% incline). I started working out 5-6 days a week for 45-90 minutes. That helped me drop another 30 pounds in four months.)
    Now I workout five days a week for 60-90 minutes. I split the time between weights and cardio (Spinning, training for a 5K) and am starting to incorporate yoga to help my flexibility.

    I lost 30lbs in about 5 months. For the first 3 months I was eating 1200 cals - lots of salad/veggies, cut back on alcohol and I was doing an hour of cardio (mainly dancing) 6 times a week and mostly not eating back exercise calories. I try not to eat too many processed foods and do have cake/sweets as long as they fit my cal goal.

    When I started doing Jillan Michaels exercises 2 1/2 months in I found I felt ill because I wasn't eating enough and upped my cals to 1400 and limited carbs to 150g. I continued to lose weight for another 2 1/2 months but I've stalled for a while so am trying to switch things up a bit again by increasing my cals to 1500 and increasing my protein intake because I'm adding in some light weights. Even though my weights not changing at the moment I feel that my body still is changing for the better.

    I think it takes a bit of research, experimentation and patience to work out what you need to do to get the weight off.

    Oh my, It looks like everyone has joined in on this one......reading through many i see the same success stories over and over with a consistency of ...........COUNTING everything that goes into your mouth. I log every chip..usually i eat at least 2 pringles..hard to stop....i nibble on a chocolate bar for 1-3 weeks....and count every nibble...i measure, i weigh...i started exercising for a little extra food as i was having a hard time dealing with the calorie reduction...i have searched out foods that are filling yet have very little calories.....like cucumbers, lettuce, carrots.....of course i still love my high caloric avocados.....then i was killing myself with exercise only to realize how fast i could counter act that would increased food..........the pain wasn't worth the gain in calories....right now i am doing a 15,000 calorie 4 week challenge for fun. i snack many many many times a day but if you will look at my diary in the end it doesn't add up an i think i am fueling my internal furnace all day long. i do exercise regularly because i feel better from it.......if you don't log everything you are only misleading yourself........i always make sure that i have had at least 8 glasses of water ...it is beneficial and won't give you false readings on the scale if you are dehyrdated... i try to stay away from hi sodium foods if i can, i eat within 20-30 minutes after getting up...a very small amount just to let the furnace start......i drink coffee on the treadmill......lol...only because i like coffee in the morning and i hit the treadmill within 30 minutes of getting up... Best of luck to you in finding what works for you...........all in all.........i honestly think it is SO simple.....eat less than you burn.......but be brutally honest with what you eat.

    Walk Walk Walk. Try at least a mile a day. Limit portion size. Fill out the food list daily. Lost about 50 pounds in about 8 months.

    I lost 30 lbs over 2 two yrs. Stopped food shopping when I was tired and stopped rewarding myself in the cashiers line with chocolate. Moderately decreased my portions, said "No thanks" at work when someone brought in goodies. Stopped eating on schedule. And ate only when I was hungry. If I'm out it's 1 glass of wine not 2. Hit a plateau so here I am. Now doing Yoga. Don' t deprive yourself, find out what works for you to loose and keep it off. Know why you want to loose, don't berate yourself when you go over your calories, deduct them the next day, if it is reasonable. You'll find your path.

    Great job everyone. Definitely motivating to hear so many successful plans. So the trick to lose weight is log in, smaller portions, move more, be accountable, and realize it will take time. Got it. Now just have to stick to it

    Lost 30 pounds in a little under six months doing Jillian Michaels' workouts, 30 minutes a day, 5-6 days a week.
    I've also managed my portion sizes and stopped eating starchy carbs at night. I have a "spike" meal every two weeks.

    I have lost 32 lbs since New Years. How I did it? Start slow with Jillians 30-day shred and now I'm almost done with Body Revolution. I think cardio is the key. For me working out in the AM is the best. I also eat a salad with tuna/egg on it for lunch every day so that I can enjoy more calories during the day. Changing what you eat is key. Stay away from processed foods. Go for fresh if you can. I also do an herbalife shake for breakfast. They are yummy!

    I set mfp for 1 lb loss per week, and ate back my exercise calories. It took about 30 weeks for the first 30 lbs to come off. For the first 6 months, the only exercise I did was walking (about 45 min a day)

    I just started exercising, it was all about calories for me. I calculated TDEE and just did that for the most part. I only have 5 lbs til I get to my goal weight.

    I stuck to a 1000 calories a day diet.
    I ate something every 2 hours and drank a lot of water.
    2 pots of coffee a day, I like coffee
    I walked 2 miles twice a week and 5 miles a day on the weekend.
    It took 8 months and I lost 100 pounds.

    One more key thing - plan your meals and cut up fruit/veggies the night before. It takes time but it is key to being successful!

    walk walk walk .. i was too fat to do much else with out feeling like i was dieing i stuck to 1400 cals at first i now eat 1200 and i eat back exercise calories and patience patience patience. your weight loss will stop and start but if you stick at it you will see results 2 years later 92lb lighter and i can run now!! . ( well my boobs still hit me in the face but it is possible)

    Took me about 6 months. I do a low carb plan because I have T2. I own a stationary bike and a street bike and I walk as well. In the summer I do water jogging. I did join a gym, but I prefer to be outside.

    My first 30 lbs have gone in about 6 months.
    I ate around 1800 calories a day + some exercise calories. I ate almost everything I wanted, just kept the portions under control.

    I exercised about 2 hours per week (not taking into account walking... I probably do walks in the park for at least 2-3 hours per week, but I don't consider them exercise... just a nice way of spending time).
    I do all kinds of exercises, I did not have a standard rutine. Just a micture of Pillates, dancing aerobic, tae-bo, all kinds of DVDs from Jillian Michaels and Biggest Loser (althought at first I couldn't to the whole workout, but in time managed to do longer workouts).


    Now, halfway, I don't lose as fast, but I'm also gaining muscle mass as I upped my workout time and gotten into more intense workouts, but I lose more inches and I feel it better (and people notice more now).

    Today is day 170 for me. I started Thanksgiving day. I quit soda. I work out 6 days a week. I only drink water about 8-12 glasses a day. Ate around 1200 calories more or less a day. Had some bumps along the way, but just kept putting in the work. When the cravings would go nuts I would take a walk or take a bath. I wish you all the best.
  • I lost 32 pounds in 12 weeks! I joined a challenge at my local gym. I probably did 4-8 group fitness classes a week (45 minutes each) - mostly Zumba. I ate between 1200-1500 calories a day, and we were asked to maintain a pretty strict diet of clean eating, which I actually followed fairly well. Week 1 & 2 no dairy, no grains, starchy vegs, dairy, salt, sugar (or sweetener). Week 3 - welcome back Greek Yogurt - watch sugar content. Week 4 - welcome back oatmeal (1x a day) Week 5 - Sweet potatoes Week 6 - gluten free pasta. Maintain for remaining 6 weeks. It was an amazing experience - now I'm just trying to rebuild the will the do it all over again :)

    I also bought a FitBit One which helped me to track my activity levels and know when I was or wasn't meeting my baseline activity goals. It was always nice to find out I had earned more calories!!

    I have lost 189 lbs since April 2012. Here is how I started, and what I did:

    First - Cut out all sodas in my life and just drank water - lost 10 lbs in 2 months. Soda is bad (duh).
    Second - Had a very restrictive calorie count (about 1500-1700), which was a huge change since I never counted calories. It was a low card (IE no carbs other than veggies), and smaller portions of meat/protein (4 oz) At this time all I did was occasionally did scuba. I added in walking for 2-3 miles, three times a week. Lost about 50 lbs in 90 days. This was under doctor/ nurse/ nutritionist's supervision. about 1/2 through this, I started using MFP. One of the ways I did walking was in a pool, better resistance,and less impact. highly recommend for larger people starting off. Supposedly, walking one mile in the water is the same as 4 miles on land.
    Third - I started to feel much better, so I stropped walking and started swimming again. 3-4 times a week for a mile each day. I stayed with the restrictive diet , and used MFP religiously. I rarely adjusted my diet for exercise ( I ate the 1500-1800 calories whether or not I exercised). I did this for another 90 days. I lost another 30 lbs.
    Fourth, I went on vacation and dove two to three times a day for two weeks, walked everywhere, and swam/body surfed when I wasn't doing something else. I stayed with my restrictive diet every day during the vacation (except Christmas eve when I went up to 2200 calories, but I had worked out 4 times that day). During that time I lost 12 lbs.
    Fifth, when I came back home, I keep swimming, but added in Deep Water exercise for 20 minutes a day and upped it to 5 times a week. I stayed with the same diet, but it was getting a little smaller (1200 to 1500 calories - no adjustment for exercise).for the next month or so, I lost 16 lbs or so.
    Finally, I added some surfing and weight training to my fitness regime. I now work out 6 times a week, with surfing being a large portion of it. I eat a little more (1700-1900 calories) and sometimes adjust for exercise. I now weight 215 lbs as of today (from 406 lbs). I am now working at maintaining, as opposed to losing. It is a new phase, and its one I hope to conquer.

    A few ideas about the journey...
    Be strong and stick with it: Is a doughnut worth not being able to walk in your 50's... or high blood pressure...or having to check you blood sugar every day?
    Be forgiving: if you slip, don't compound it, by getting upset and slipping again
    Be diligent: Use MFP - it is in my opinion the only way to make sure you stick to your plan
    Be focused: Focus on diet first, then exercise. I read somewhere (in a MFP forum I think) that weight loss is 80% diet, 20% exercise.I think that is true. Give up carbs like bread, rice, potatoes or at least reduce them. Also processed sugar as much as you can.
    Home Cookin': Eat out less, and at home more - cheaper and healthier.
    Be a water baby: Exercising in H20 for bigger people makes so much sense. Less impact, more resistance and it keeps you cooler.
    Get support: All of us need a helping hand sometimes. MFP, friends and family, doctors, etc.. can help.
    Be inspirational: I hope that my journey has inspired others to lose the weight that they have gained

    BTW-I am 47 yrs old and a male.

    Primarily portion control, cutting back on junk foods. I did cardio 2-3x a week (elliptical, treadmill, cycling).

    I've lost 69 lbs. in 1 year. Foodwise: I just keep my calorie intake at a moderate deficit. I make sure that I keep my protein at about 1gram per lb of lean body mass and otherwise I just aim to eat a well rounded diet.

    For exercise: I trail run generally twice a week, hike around once a week or so, weight lifting 3x a week, and whatever else catches my fancy - right now i's karate twice a week.

    I would like to add that even though I've lost almost seventy pounds, much more importantly I've lost 10 sizes. Right now I am a full 4 sizes smaller than I was when I was at this weight before. 70 lbs would not equal 10 sizes down were it not for the wonders of body recomposition from lifting.
