I Have Caught the RUNNING BUG

I'm on Week 5 Day 3 of C25k. Friday, I'm supposed to have my first 20 minute run. Today was intervals of 8 minutes running and 5 minutes walking. I'm nervous!!

Let me ask you all something. Does speed come with more and more training? Right now I weigh 268 pounds (down from a high of 336) and I just feel like I'm going so slow.

    Congratulations.

In answer to your question. In one word yes.

As you get stronger, and lighter, and your CV system gets fitter your speed will increase. It just takes time and patience.

I started running a year ago and i could barely run 200 yards and it was SLOW. I persevered and now I can average a 10 minute mile for about 12 miles.

Enjoy it and don't give up!

Speed will come from several causes.

    1. Weight loss. SInce you have a ways to go this will speed you up a lot.
    2. Increased cardiovascular fitness from lots of easy running. SInce you are just starting out this will speed you up a lot too.
    3. Increased specific fitness from a small amount of speed training.

    Right now focus on 1 & 2 and don't worry about 3.

I think the speed you are looking for will come in the form of endurance. Today you may be able to run .5 mile at a pace of 9mm, but to go 3 miles you have to slow down to 12mm. Eventually you will be able to go farther at the faster pace.

Great job on the running! Don't worry about speed! You will get faster over time. The most important thing is that you are running! I have a run scheduled this morning :)
