I just don't seem to be losing and someone stated that doing a detox usually boosts their metabolism. I am at the point where I will try anything! Even starvation! I would love to hear the pros and cons of doing a detox, and if you have done a detox, what kind did you do, where can I get it, and how did it effect your weight?

If you can pull up the "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" video on the Dr. Oz Website - it discusses detox at length.

When they made this statement to you, did they also provide you with some scientific research to peruse that supported their assertion? Probably not, that's what I call bro-science.

A detox is a generic term that means little. It also won't fix an absent caloric deficit.

I did a "detox/cleanse" juice thing for a few days, I felt excellent, didn't lose any weight, but got me to change how I was eating, and reaffirmed to me mentally that food isn't that important, and that I can live without it for a time if I chose to. :) However, it also reminded me of the almost carnally delightful feeling of biting and chewing through meat. (It was basically 3 or 4 days of replacing food with juices. I enjoyed it.)

Dr Oz....Run for the hills!!
OP, there is no pro's to "detox" - any weight you will lose will be water.....and you will probably binge afterwards because you starved yourself...
What are you doing for exercise?
Open your diary, maybe we can help....

The fat sick and nearly dead is on netflix too. I dont know if I would go the entire length of what the man did but he looked amazing to the point where he was glowing when he was done.

The fat sick and nearly dead movie, the guy definately did not just lose water weight. One man in the video was about to die because he was so unhealthy and it saved his life.

If Dr Oz endorses it, run for your life.

The dude was like 400lbs and veggies aren't calorically dense. He probably wasn't even hitting 1500-2000 calories per day.
He could have had the same results eating anything.

Eating less than 1100 calories a day almost every day will really wreck your metabolism. Give your body a little more fuel to work with and things should level out. Please take care of yourself! I don't know how you have the energy to get up off the couch let alone work out.

Take good care of your body, like you take good care of your family.

Detox means a lot of things, if you are talking about:
    A. buying products or extreme juicing or fad detox diet ALL CONS!

    B. removing processed crap from your diet, making an effort to eat whole foods, get your carbs and sugars from fruits and vegetables, then PROS include feeling better, clearer skin, energy, eventual handle on sugar and carb cravings, etc. Hope that helps? When I say im doing a "detox" what I usually mean is a smoothie for breakfast (fruit + vegetable + almond milk + healthy fat), a salad for lunch, nuts for snack, and protein and veggies for dinner. Helps me get back on track esp after a binge (Zaxbys binge sunday - SO RUDE!)

The only people who should 'detox' are drug addicts and alcoholics

Pros: It won't kill you like a heartrate-stimulating pill could

Cons: It's not a real thing.

Detox is a total misnomer, since it's actually what you do to eliminate addiction to alcohol or narcotics, not lose weight. What "toxins" exactly are you looking to get rid of? Fat, even too much of it, is actually part of your body and therefore not really a "toxin". Heavy metals that may have built up inside of you are potential toxins, but you won't get rid of them with juice.

Also, any rapid weight you may lose would come from losing water weight and emptying out your colon.

Give it a shot if you want, you might like it, but calorie defecit and working out are your best bets for long term success.

DONT STARVE YOURSELF OR REDUCE CALORIES OR BUY A DETOX PROGRAM!!! up exercise, take other measurements (resting heart rate, waist measurement, how you feel after doing a previously difficult task) get a workout buddy, if you have been losing and then stop, your body is recalculating, keep going!

OP runs a pretty severe calorie deficit already. She's definitely got that part down. As her MFP friend I worry!

  • your body detoxes itself quite happily 24/7 and needs no help from any fads. just eat well and let your body do it's thing.

I'm in a major city and I'm doing a three week detox through the major teaching hospital. Our "leader" is both an MD and an ND and has been with the integrative medicine practice for 12 years.

The "core" idea is that are bodies are not made to process certain things we ingest: chemicals in foods, e.g., dairy and gluten. i've always been able to keep my weight between 140 and 150 (I'm 5 ft 8), but I have had to do so through strict calorie counting and sometimes fasting after a holiday food fest. I have continual crarvings for high carb foods (not sweets for some reason.)

Another "core" idea is that our bodies are so taxed by the constantly filtering of toxins...environmental, foods, drink, et al that our bodies are in a constant state of inflammation...and inflammation is correlated to heart disease (and lots of other stuff.) There is even some speculation that your individual "toxic" load can trigger those genes which can lead to cancers.

The final "core" idea is that the fatigue many of us feel is correlated to the work our body is constantly doing to restore itself from all this toxic assault.

Last week, I started giving up dairy (day one), gluten grains (day two) and weaned myself off caffeine (over 4 days.) Now, my regimen for the next 5 days is detox tea (this cleans your liver/kidneys and you can buy some flavorful ones at Whole Foods, green veggies, organic fruit, nongluten grains. And, lots of filtered water.

I feel great...no cravings, I sleep well, I get up energized.

If you don't have access to medical supervision, Mark Hyman has a great little book called "The UltraSimple Diet", which is a structured program you can do reasonably easily at home.

No offense to anyone, but I'm not going to defend this program or the concept. If you feel good the way you eat now, then to each their own.

    I didn't...and now I do.

If one wants to increase their metabolism, then you train a little harder than you are now. I doubt you're even near the peak of your performance.

  • I just spent the past 3 weeks doing the Carol Vorderman 28 day detox.... The rules are basically no wheat, sugar (from rubbish), vegan, and no caffeine. Day 5 I had the worst migraine ever detoxing from caffeine, I had to go to bed. I was ill (common cold but I felt rubbish for the whole 3 weeks) and didn't lose anything. I was eating what I thought was enough (3 meals and snacks in between with smoothies and water for drinks) but if I work that out now because it wasn't substantial I was probably only having between 700-900kcals a day. My friend had done it before and raved about it as did everyone online but it did nothing for me.... Dunno if this helps.

~Says the guy thats telling people to eat junk food. FYI you can still have high LDL, blood pressure, and over all poor health even if you are skinny and eating junk food. Can I also mention higher risk of cancer. No one here is endorsing Dr Oz.

Hello there. Ergumm it would probably be a good idea to make your food diary public. Also what is your height/weight/age? People on this site who have successfully lost weight through means that do not include detox cleanses would be able to give you sound advice based on what those factors I just listed are.

You'll get a lot of snarky comments since people bring up a detox thread at least a couple of times a month, if not week - yet a detox cleanse of any kind is not the way to go. Most of the time you lose weight quickly, but gain it all back once you go back to a normal diet. Darn water weight, giving people false hopes.
