5K how long to finish the race? What type shoes?

How long does it take you to run a 5K? I just started the C25K program.
Also what type of shoes should I order? I just completed C25K Week 1 Day 1...
I am getting / got blisters on the bottom of my feet now :frown:

Takes me about 25 minutes to do a 5k but I've been running for a few years now - I was ten minutes slower five years ago.

As for shoes, go to a sports store that has a treadmill and video and have them find the best shoe for you. The most likely reason for your blisters is that your current shoes are too small (don't be surprised if you buy running shoes half a size bigger than your regulars shoes).

Well done on starting your running programme and good luck.

I started C25K last August. Ran my first 5k in December in 28 min. Ran my first 10k about 6 weeks ago in 55 min.

As to shoes I love my Merrill Barefeet. But everyone is different.

Get fitted for shoes at a running store (not a big sports chain store). Blisters could be from the shoes but also take a look at your socks. Synthetic material only - cotton is a no-no.

I can run 5K in 25-26 minutes but don't aim for a pace like that right away. Take it slow at first and run at a comfortable pace.
  • I am not a runner by any stretch of the imagination however I was getting maybe 60 mins of walking in 3-4 times per week as well as soccer training once a week and a game on the weekend. I did my first 5km "run" about 8 weeks ago. I had to stop 3 times to walk so probably only ran 2/3 of it. It took me 37.5 minutes. I have been cutting it down a bit each week and my PB so far is 32.5mins. I'd like to run 5km in less than 30 mins by the end of the year. Sorry you've got blisters. Would definitely go and have your shoes properly fitted before venturing out again. All the best!

I agree with getting the right fit shoes at a running store with a treadmill. As for socks, I paid $11 a pair & they are worth every penny! Get what is right for you. My recommendation regarding time is to not think about that now. Work on distance and your ease in doing it first. Can you function after doing a run or do you need hours to recoup after? Time will come later!

I did a 5k training plan similar to c25k and did my first 5k in 42mins, I am slow :)

I stopped running after that, then nearly a year later I started running again, now, and am doing a 5k in about 28mins, in a race I think I would be a couple mins quicker.

I do a 5k ParkRun every Satrday morning. My best time is a sliver over 30 minutes, so I'm hoping to break that barrier this week (though teh forecast is for rain).

Go to a specialist running shop and get them to measure your gait and give advice on running shoes.

I've just retired my Asics, and am breaking in a pair of KSwiss.

I just ran my first 5K event in just under 30 minutes. I second the notion of getting fitted at a running store as the proper footwear can make all the difference in the world. You might also find a run group there for first time 5Kers we did and it has been a great thing. New Balance No Boundaries run group!

Time: 25-35 minutes depending on how in shape you are. If you are below 25 you above average. Below 20 and you are getting into the elite zone. Below 18 and you have a chance of winning outright.

Shoes: Stay away from big chains like Foot Locker. Try to find a mom and pop running store and get fitted.

Thanks for all your input. I def need to change my socks. They are cotton. I didn't know that they would be a problem while running. Ordered some "running socks" from Amazon will see how they work while I am trying to decide what type of shoes to buy.
