What body shape am I?

Well. My friend told me I'm an apple. She does fashion design, so I went off on what she said.
However, my best friend's mom measured me and my shoulders and my hips are the same. 17" across from shoulder to shoulder and hip to hip. According to that, I'm an hour glass. I carry a lot of my weight in my core (back and tummy), but I generally lose weight all over (well. It's harder to lose in my tummy and back, but generally speaking), so what body shape am I? Here is a picture of me (I think I'm smaller now, though). I think I'm an hourglass (somewhere under this). What body type do you think I am?

by your pictures, I'd say apple. I saw a site once that you typed in your measurements and it gave you your shape, but I've forgotten the name sadly.

Way too many clothes on to give you an accurate answer.

I think you're an "apple". Your legs are pretty thin and you seem to carry your weight on your upper body.

Heard somewhere that there's a difference between "apple" and "pear" shapes. I can't work out what shape I am, since I seem to gain fat all over, but particularly in abdomen and thigh region. But I also have very thick arms.. so..

I meant to say, to be an hourglass the waist has to be more than 9 inches smaller than hips or bust measurements.

I would say you are an " apple ", because for an hour glass you don't have enough waist.
I am an hourglass with 13 inches difference between hips and waist....I have never in all my life owned a pair of jeans because of that....lol.

I think you are an apple... for now :P But once you lose weight you may discover you are a different shape :)

However for hourglass shape your hips and bust (not the shoulders) are of about equal measurements and the waist (narrowest part) is about 10 inches smaller than the hip/bust measurement. For most people, hourglass shape is not obtainable (it's like 8% of people that have it I think) but that's okay cause MANY shapes can be beautiful not just the hourglass! :)

There are lots of "shape calculators" online but if you are like me, you can get a lot of different answers! Before some calculators said I was an apple. Now my waist is more than 10 inches smaller than my bust, so some say I'm hourglass. But my hips are much smaller than my bust so they aren't equal meaning I'm like an inverted triangle. But some sites say because my waist measurement is less than 9 inches smaller than my hips, that I must be a straight/banana shape... with FF boobs? HAHA.

Point being, don't stress too much about which category you fall into :) Just focus on being the best YOU possible :)

What difference does it make? I'm being serious, here. I don't understand why labeling the shape of your body is helpful.

Can someone please explain? Thank you!

Never heard this before! :) But remember you can't target specific areas for weight lose so don't get discouraged if you don't immediately lose weight on your trouble areas. It will come off eventually with hard work :) Everyone carries weight differently and loses it in different places first. Don't drive yourself crazy with a million ab exercises a day lol. You'll probably hate it after a while and although it will work to tighten up the muscles underneath, ab exercises alone won't make you lose fat. So focus on a nutrition as well :)

What Mads, said. Know your body type can help when it comes to clothing because some things flatter your shape better than others

Most of the time apple shapes are just chubbier hour glasses....you just tend to carry the fat around your belly. But if you lose weight you'll probably be more hourglassy

    No.

Bodyshape will not define how easy (or difficult) it is to lose weight, just stick to your eating properly and exercise and the weight will come off.

I've been lifting for a while (but inconsistently, unfortunately). Lately, I've been limited to upper body, do to a lower body injury, which I'm okay with. I do everything except squats and leg press. I also eat at a deficit.

No, they are not chubbier versions of hourglass figures.

Apple shapes are larger around the middle, hourglass figures have a waist that is around 10" below what the bust and hips measure. Totally different shape.
  • I'd say you are apple shaped. I've never heard of measuring your shoulders you help with your shape. It's typically bust, waist, and hips.

I think you are an apple, but if you want to know for sure you need more measurements. Yes, an hour glass figure will have similar measurements in their shoulders and hips. But, they will also have significantly smaller measurements around the waist. Its hard to tell from the pictures because of angles and the types of clothes - you could be either. Your waist measurement in relation to the other two will be what tells you your general shape. If you are an apple now, that doesn't mean you couldn't be an hour glass as you lose weight - it on where your body takes fat from first. I love the pics you posted - great outfits!

I guess, but when you have lived in a particular body for a length of time, do you not already know what suits your shape? Unless your shape has recently changed. Then I could understand.

No! An apple shape may be a chubby rectangle, but they will not become an hourglass with weight loss. Apples have narrow hips, no amount of weight loss is going to give them the wide hips that a pear or hourglass shape has.

    actually, it usually does.
a true hourglass tends to lose weight evenly. This is part of what defines "hourglass".
even with a significant amount fo excess weight an hourglass still has proportionately hourglass measurements.

it's a specific set of body measurements, where your waist much be at least 10 inches smaller than your bust AND your hips. At higher weights, this proportion should be higher.

Hourglasses are not made, they are born. They are also rare (about 8% of women). Which isn't to say that there aren't many other gorgeous body types out there, just that we should be realistic in all our weight loss goals.

do you never buy clothing online and/or read clothing reviews?

as an extreme hourglass myself I do find it essential to know my body type, and also, unfortunately, to try to help other women define their types both for their own clothing choices and not to mislead me.
