Ok so for the last 3 years I have been living in Alaska. I have not worn shorts in that entire time. I am 27 and we are Pcs'ing (moving for the non-military folks) to Hawaii June 15. I am currently 159 ish and have no idea what shorts are appropriate for my age and weight. Any ideas on the length? I am going to be pretty damn ghost like for at least a few months. Should I skip them all together?

LOl - me too.
Just go try on a bunch of different pairs until you find one that feel comfortable in. If you have thigh issues like me, buy Body Glide so the shorts don't ride up (put it on thighs)0 -
Ok Bet the humidity would def make them ride up I will def get some of that0

I prefer skirts or skorts to shorts for casual wear. I just feel prettier than in shorts.
You may consider using a tanning salon with full spectrum bulbs to build up a base before going to Hawaii. Do it slowly over a couple of weeks, and don't allow the beds to burn you. Get out before you think you are done, as it takes 12-24 hours for color to develop. This will get your body primed to produce the melanin it needs to protect you from the UV rays of the intense tropical sun. I have permanent scarring on my shoulders from a weekend in the Caribbean in March 1996. I burned horrendously bad despite copious use of sunscreen.
Melanin is a defense mechanism for the body to use to protect against damage. And like your muscles will get weak from disuse, so will your body's defenses. Start working on it now, so you aren't caught off guard by 2nd degree sunburn.0 -

Been thinking about that our gym on post has one you can stand in I have a claustrophobia like crazy. I bet that those might be ok though what sort of lotion should I use if any? I like skirts don't have any though I will pick up some for sure0 -
I would wait until I hit the islands and see what the locals are wearing.0

I presume you'll be on Oahu since you're military and let me be the first to tell you, it's not so much the heat as the humidity, the island is actually pretty much around the 70's-80's all year round. For night time wear the closer you are to the water as the sun goes down the more you'll regret your choice to wear shorts. (Downtown at night+Shorts=instant regret.) I'm a big fan of leggings and tunic shirts or just jeans past 6pm.
For day wear I find dresses and skirts are preferable to shorts because of how utterly sticky and humid the air always is. Shorts will end up clinging to you like a second skin no matter how loose they started out.
But all that aside, try some on and pick out the ones you feel comfortable/pretty in. I hope you enjoy your stay when you arrive; its a nice place to live. Except for rainy season.0 -
I'm just here to say that I'm totally jealous of your PCS to Hawaii. :flowerforyou:
Also, I tend to live in capris over shorts. I'm not much of a shorts person, but I have a couple pairs from Gap and Old Navy that aren't totally offensive for my age. It gets horribly humid here in Ohio, too and these shorts don't cause me any trouble.0 -
I always follow the school rule of 3ins above the knee, lol. Even when I lose all my weight I don't think I will be wearing any short shorts but we'll see Wear what you like though. That seems to be the best way to go about it.0

I am your age and a little heavier... I think almost any lenght short is acceptable. I wouldn't go booty shorts length, but since you are asking, I can't imagine that would be your go to. I'm a fan of skirts and sundresses, but honestly sometimes that just doesn't fit the bill. Just go try on shorts and capri's and see what you like. In most cases, the best look is what you feel most confident in.
Also, as a pastey person, I would suggest using the Jergens fair to medium tinted lotion until you get some base color. If you apply it every other day, it isn't going to turn orange but it knocks off the white glow. Also, wear sunscreen when you go outside. Even with 40/50spf, if I am outside for more than 3 hours, I will get a little sunkissed. The good thing with getting sun with sunscreen is you are blocking the harmful, cancer causing rays from hitting your skin. And you will gradually build a base tan which will keep your from becoming a lobster. Personally, I am so afraid of skin cancer, that I most likely will never go to a tanning salon. So my regular summer routine is this... sunless tanner and laying out/ playing outside with sunscreen applied. It has worked so far.
Enjoy living in Paradise!0 -
Old Navy makes some called "perfect 5" shorts" that I think are an appropriate length. They are not shorty shorts or hip hugger so they are more age appropriate (I am 29). Also agree with the "shop with the locals" suggestion.0
-
Hey hun, yeah I was always worried we would PCS to someplace random like that with the weather. Geez 2 OCUS ones in a row?
I would say old navy and order a ton anrd then return. I tend to go for 5" or 7" due to thick thighs (pear shape), They also have a 3.5" but personally find those too short for me. I am a nanny though as well and want to be a bit more covered up around the girls so I mostly buy 7" ones. They fall around mid thigh for me.
Also as the one other person said, shorts + humidity = stuck to your leg so go for a more cargo / light weight vs jean material as well.0 -

I like this idea! I have problems buying shorts too. I was going to say they may be more expensive there but then you're coming from Alaska so it's probably the same.
As for the tanning recommendation? Forget that!! Embrace your paleness :-) I pretty much glow in the dark, but I don't care, it's not worth the damage tanning or chemicals can cause your skin. And believe it or not some people like fair skin :-)
Find some shorts you're comfortable in and have a great time! Skorts are comfy too (especially if you have chub rub issues), but I feel to much like a soccer mom (not that this is a bad thing, just not me) when I wear them.0 -

I just bought some of these, they are a great length for me too.0 -
First thank you for yours or you husbands service:flowerforyou:
Second can only suggest and even my 14 year old chimed in recently... NO one really wants to see booty cheeks coming out the bottom of your shorts no matter how skinny you are. Had 2 skinny girls this past Saturday in front of us and we both turned the other way and said the same thing ewww yuk.
Other than that any other length is fine.0 -
Ah Alaska is the ONE place I told hubby I will NOT PCS for 4 years there. lol
Anyways... I like the longer shorts, board shorts (maybe the correct word for them?)I like them because no ridding up and I still look cute.0 -
Addon: If you want to shop with the locals (Which is a great idea) Try Pearlridge mall or Windward mall. There are no locals at Ala Moana. None. Except the ones who work there.0

haha
I am moving to Hawaii in August! My husband is in the Army and is currently looking at apartments.
I know I am going to need a whole new wardrobe, and I ALSO don't wear shorts!
And I have pastey white legs, since they never see sun...
I am going to wait till I get there before I go shopping for clothes. I might grab a few things here, but mostly will wait. I want to see what the locals wear.
I'm the same weight and a few years older than you. But I'm hoping to be at a smaller size when I move. haha0 -

Not pastey white, that sounds negative! How about alabaster skin :-) or maybe fair, immaculate, milky, neutral, pearly or snowy. Hehehe Sorry, I'm a pale skin anti skin cancer advocate0 -
Express has a lot of very cute, age appropriate shorts! They have varying lengths, all very conservative, IMO.0

HAHAHAHA
hmmm.... I will go with alabastar.... I can't go with immaculate because I am clumsy as hell and have bruises on my legs from crashing into things.
But I don't go out into the sun much. That will change in Hawaii, though.
And as cancer runs in my family, I too am anti-cancer and will be all about carrying around the bottles of sunblock.0 -
Me personally .. I would wear maxi skirts and a tank top or a cami over wearing shorts. In humid weather I just get so uncomfortable in clothes that are not breathable. In a maxi skirt you can just lift it up a bit and get a little sun on your legs when your hanging out at the beach or at home in the yard working on your tan a little at a time. Aww I'm jealous ... I want to go to Hawaii! But regarding shorts I would find a comfortable pair maybe an inch to a few inches above the knee. I also like longer shorts because they don't ride up.0

Thanks all for all the help we get to go to oklahoma (home) before hawaii i just found out i am thrilled my sister and mom want to take me shopping so excited0

I adore athletic skirts that are knit (think thin sweatshirt material) for hot humid weather. Link to one, though expensive for a skirt -

Otherwise bermuda's? Old Navy will have decent prices.
Go for 5" inseam or longer. 5" will still be short like running shorts.0 -
