Protein powders

I'm an almost vegetarian that sometimes eats fish, but I'm a trying to lower the amount of fish to maybe once every other week or so and so now I'm finding it difficult to get in my protein so I can build some muscle and have sustainable weight loss.
Does anyone use protein powder or do you have a non meat way of getting protein?
I do consume peanut butter and eggs as well, so that helps a little but I could use a little boost from time to time.
Any help is greatly appreciated thanks!

Just in case you weren't aware of this feature, when you go to the message boards section, there is a button called search and you can type in a keyword/phrase (ex: protein shakes) and you can see the threads that have already been created on the topic. Good luck! :flowerforyou:

You don't need protein powders. Beans, nuts, nut butters, spinach, peas, quinoa, kale, and Swiss chard all provide a great amount of protein. Just curious though, why are you cutting out the fish?0 -

I've been vegetarian for 3 years and eat around 170g of protein a day-feel free to check out my diary for ideas.0

meat is obviously the most abundant in protein and most meats have a full amino acid profile, meaning you get the full range of amino acids that you need in just one type of meat.
failing that, whey and casein are protein powders that can help, but, if you're a pescatarian looking to cut down on even fish, then eating whey is probably in proximal violation of your dieting standards...it's all dairy (not sure if you eat dairy).
you can usually get a complete animno acid profile by eating beans, legumes, nuts, and various tubers. not only are these protein sources not overly processed like powder, they bear a great amount of micronutrients, vitamins, and minerals.0 -
A co-worker of mine just gave me a sample of this vegan protein powder to try:
Vega Sport Performance Protein -- 110 calories per scoop, 25g of protein (http://vegasport.com/)
I had the berry flavor and mixed it with my veggie/fruit blend today. It's sweetened with Stevia so it's more on the sweet side if you want to give it a try. Can be found at Whole Foods. I'm told it's on sale right now, but this product is pricey. Still thinking about committing to purchase a container of it.0 -

If mercury is your only concern, just vary the type of fish and where it's sourced from. I see in your diary that you eat canned tuna. Canned sardines are delicious, canned salmon is just ok. It's a much milder flavor than canned tuna, anyway. But if you want to be vegetarian because of the ethical reasons, then obviously my point is moot point.0 -
Don't forget about your dairy options as well. Greek yogurt and cottage cheese are often used for protein intake as well. I get the cups of Fage 2% greek yogurt and they have 20g of protein per cup. My local grocery only has the plain flavored but a little honey takes care of that.0

I see your point, but then there are lacto-vegetarians, lacto-ovo vegetarians, ovo-vegetarians. It's confusing all around regardless. I mean, when I tell some people I'm pescetarian they ask what church I go to.0 -

:drinker: I started using "flexitarian" instead, but that just brought about the same amount of confusion. So I go with the mouthful, "vegetarian-but-i-eat-fish-and-some-dairy."0 -
I use soy isolate protein powder from GNC and I'm vegetarian. I usually have it as a snack or after I work out. It has 25g of complete protein, gmo-free, pretty cheap.0
