Sugar - staying under daily goal

Options
Hi,

Just started on here, I'm on day two. I'm finding that its hard to keep my ideal Sugar intake under control - one piece of fruit or something and it seems to have a huge effect on the day.. Anyone else have this issue?

I do too! I've tried to limit my fruit intake to one fruit a day but sometimes I go over. If I know I'm going to eat multiple fruit a day, I make sure nothing else I eat that day will be high in sugar!

I always go over on sugar. I am trying to get my blood glucose levels under control and they are going down slowly even though I am going over on sugar. Just remember that carbs turn into sugar!

MFP doesn't differentiate types of sugar. Unless you have some very specific reason to be concerned about sugar intake, it's not particularly worth paying attention to.

Yeah I was really surprised by how much sugar - or should I say HOW LITTLE SUGAR I should be consuming, when your supposed to have 2 servings of fruit a day!

Agreed... and I am a Type 2 Diabetic and have never tracked a single gram of sugar.... I pay attention to my caloric intake and my 3 main macro's (Carbs, Proteins, and Fats)......

I am ALWAYS over in my sugar because of fruit, I don't really pay that much attention to it and my weight loss has been fine.

    This is a great article

    http://www.livestrong.com/article/474832-recommended-grams-of-sugar-per-day/

It talks about how the recommended grams of sugar per day relates to added sugar, not natural sugar found in fruits. :)

Sugar is just a carb. As long as you're eating enough fats and protein, your carbs/sugar aren't particularly important unless you have a medical issue that requires carbs/sugar to be monitored.

However, it should be noted that fructose and sucrose can only be stored as liver glycogen and not muscle glycogen. The liver can hold 100-120g glycogen so anything more than that will be converted to triglycerides. As long as you still have a calorie deficit this will even out. Just try to make most of your carbs glucose and not sucrose or fructose. Fructose in particular has been shown to decrease exercise performance, increased likelihood of gastrointestinal distress, and increase perception of exertion.

    Here are some studies:

As long as you're under your calorie goal, you'll lose weight. Some people find that sugar (even from fruit) causes them to have more sugar/carb cravings so keep that in mind.

When I started out in April I was upset that each and every day I was over my sugar limit. I do not use sugar, honey, agave products, stevia or any sweetener and drink my coffee and tea plain. Yet, two small oranges get me above my limit.
I am lucky in that I prefer veggies over fruit and these days eat no more than two pieces of fruit and have learned to live with the fact that if I do I am over.
Good Luck on your new lifestyle adventure....:o).
