knee pain

I have had a "bad knee" for a while now. I attributed it to my weight gain, since it never hurt before I started gaining weight. It always came and went. I never went to the dr or anything because it would hurt, and then go away the next day.
Recently though, my left knee has been on fire. It isn't swollen, bruised or anything noticeable. When I walk, it is like a dull throb but when I sit for too long, or when I go to bed the pain is so intense, I jump up and have to walk around. It is along the inside and underside of my knee. I find putting ice on it helps but not for long.
I go to boot camp at the gym, there are 3 more sessions left. I almost didn't go today, but i went and told the trainer my problem, so she adjusted all my workouts to upper body without putting any strain on my knee. She suggested to keep up with the ice, motrin and call the dr if it doesn't get better.
I know I need to call the dr, but I feel like she is only going to refer me to someone else and it will be months before I am seen, and by then it will get better on it's own. That is just how I am with doctors Has anyone had any similar pain? what did you do?
And yes, I will be calling the dr. I am just bummed. I don't want to deal with an injury when I was getting so excited about working out!

There is a lot more information needed to know to give information about the injury but if your insurance allows, go straight to an orthopedic and skip the referral process. Many family docs don't have sports med/ortho background and are going to give you the staple rest for 2 weeks, ibuprofen, ice....lecture.0

I have had bad knees since high school. Had to have the fluid drained out a few times. My doctor suggested heat and that is what I use. Trying to avoid the knee replacements. I played so much volleyball for years and I really messed mine up. I will wrap them when they are really hurting and I am still able to exercise. The wraps give me support. Just watch the squats. I never over extend. I sure hope you feel better very soon. cortisone shots help too. God bless.0

don't take knee injuries lightly - and if your dr only gives you pain meds (mine had this ultra good sports cream - i couldn't even tell i had a knee anymore) be prepared to check with someone else.
i've had knee pains off and on since i took up running - turns out they are quite the indicator for when it is time to get new shoes.0 -

Yup! My knee pain was unbearable and I had to scuba dive with it or fail a class. Two days later I went to my orthopedic surgeon and he sent me straight to get an MRI. I ended up with extra cartilage and a plica in my knee, which lead to tendonitis, but it wasn't going to get better. He gave me a cortisol shot to see if we could avoid surgery. Nope. Well, my professors didn't allow me to miss class for surgery to I had to wait until Christmas break. My "injury" happened the first week of September. I highly advise going to an orthopedic over any family doctor. It's what they're trained to do and knees are important joints! If you need some support from a fellow cripple...feel free to add me0
