Thyroid problems

Hello everyone. For those of you who may be dealing with thyroid problems I wanted to tell you about a book I am reading. It is called THE THYROID DIET MANAGE YOUR METABOLISM FOR LASTING WEIGHT LOSS. By Mary J. Shomon. It may sound rather dry but it really is not and I am AMAZED at how much I have leared about metabolism and thyroid. I strongly recommend this book, it is full of great information and suggestions.

:flowerforyou: Thank you this is very helpful as I've recently found I have an underactive thyroid.
I shall read it as I'm very reluctant to go on the medication the doctor has prescribed without first trying everything naturally possible  :happy:0 -
Thanks! I have under active thyroid...am on meds, but it seems to be helping. Will look at the book though!0

To those who are prescribed thyroid meds:
I recently met with a "natural" doctor and he was saying that those meds can be detrimental to your health. They fool your body in to thinking that the thyroid no longer needs to function so essentially if you were to go off your meds you could actually die. I know that's a startling statement to make (and I'm not trying to scare anyone or sound like a know-it-all) but I just learned so much from him that I never would have dreamed of thinking about. As a result I'm making a more conscious effort to fully educated and not just trust some one because they have a MD after their name. I previously voiced concern to my OB-GYN about my birth control affecting my hormones; he pretty much said I have nothing to worry about. Well, after being tested I have learned that I have low estrogen (most likely the result of the Mirena birth control I have). Some times WE know what is best for us!
I was told by this guy that I also have an underactive thyroid and am currently doing some research on some natural ways to correct it to hope that in the future I can get my body stabalized and will no longer be reliant on a supplement. I'm going to look in to that book too! Thanks!0 -
I've been on thyroid med. for 13 years. I would be interested in any natural remedies...anything you can post would be helpful. I guess I always thought that there was no way to replace the tsh hormone naturally...0

L tyrosine is an herbal supplement i took for awhile. After I gave birth all of my hormones were out of whack including my TSH and I took this and sea kelp and it really helped some of my symptoms including some minor hair loss. It's worth looking into but caution, herbals are NOT harmless. You have to be careful with other medications and other herbals. Ask a nutritional specialist or a Dr. as to what is ok to take.0

Thanks for sharing this book, like everyone else that came to this thread I'll be sure to check it out0

I also recommend talking to a natural doctor, since all of our bodies/situations are different. I'm still trying to do some research so I don't have much info myself....0

I like the idea of natural remedies; unfortunately, I no longer HAVE a thyroid, so I do need the meds to survive and function normally. I'd say to anyone who isn't in this boat, though, to look into natural treatments for over/underactive thyroid.0

Thanks for sharing everyone. All the women in my family have thyroid problems. I started re-reading the book suggested by MzMolly...hope to see some results. I definitely will check with my dr. about adding any herbals....he is very proactive that way. :smooched: :happy:0
