Meal replacements and supplements?

Just wondering what everyone would recommend for meal replacements and supplements.

If you recommend either can you explain what they do and why you suggest them.

Why did you join MFP if you don't want to do it the MFP way and eat healthier food and get a little exercise? Stop looking for a magic cure and count your calories by eating healthier foods or you are just going to put it all back on when you stop using it.

Not asking for the magic pill I am doing it the healthy way by working out every day and eating healthier. Not asking for some crazy gimmick you see on tv. Just asking what meal replacements or supplements people take? There are times when I cant eat so instead of skipping a meal it would be nice to have something.

I agree with mockchoc, fast diets almost never has long term results...

Anyways, meal replacements are usually shakes, or sometimes something you can chew on, that tries to provide you with the most nutrients as possible while keeping calorie intake as low as possible. Sometimes even dangerously low. And not all of them even has all the nutrients and vitamins you need daily. I once took my friends Herbalife meal replacement and I just read ingredients cos of curiosity. It was insane, extremely low calories and only few them most essential nutrients and vitamins. You would lose weight for sure on that but if you sit on it for a couple of weeks or more you will not do a favor to your health and metabolism...

If you want to have something just take a protein shake. Add some banana to it, maybe some peanut butter, that's what I do. Just don't do it too often...

Two of my family members did the Cambridge Diet and lost an insane amount of weight, however as soon as they stopped, the weight came back on.

The issue with meal replacements and supplements is sometimes you end up putting the weight back on and then some. I am not condoning the use, just weight up the pros and cons and ask yourself do you actually need it?

In the morning if I don't have time to eat or I just don't feel like cooking, I will make a smoothie using fruits, yogurt, milk, some sugar (optional) and ice. I've also done that for lunch instead of eating chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese with the kiddos. Here's my favorite smoothie recipe and I can get four 8 ounce servings out of it.

    2 bananas
    6 ounce vanilla yogurt
    1/4 cup sugar
    2 TBSP creamy peanut butter
    1 cup 2% milk
    1 cup orange juice
    4 ice cubes

    Blend all ingredients until smooth.

Plenty of people on this site use smoothies as a meal or an after workout snack, I've seen multiple threads in the recipe section of the forums for smoothies.

I don't believe in meal replacement just makes me more hungry but I guess there have been days where time was running out and they came handy. Protein supplements can be beneficial if you do a lot of cardio and weight training and find it hard to get the protein you need to build lean muscles from your regular diet, but it is not essential for weight loss. Don't waste your money, stick with a diet (lifestyle) that works for you and spend your money on nice organic products instead. (just my opinion)

I can't recommend any meal replacements or supplements. There are complex phytochemical reactions within whole foods that activate various minerals and vitamins, making them much more effective in the body than if they were to be isolated out of their natural state.
