Hi does anyone have any recommendations for protein shakes for women?

I'm kind of clueless when it comes to this stuff and I don't want to go and buy the wrong kind.

Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

You don't need a shake made for women. A protein shake is simply a supplement to help you reach your protein goals if you aren't getting enough from diet alone.

If you are reaching protein from food... or if you can by making a few changes do that. Only use a shake when you won't reach your goals.

They won't do anything special for you.

You only need a protein shake if you aren't meeting your protein goals through food. Protein shakes aren't magic... they are a supplement just like a multi vitamin ... designed to give you something you are not getting through regular food. I personally prefer to get protein from real food instead of a shake.

How much protein should we be having a day? Would the settings amount on this be right or would I need to adjust it myself. Sorry but I really haven't a clue

The settings here are very low. Always aim to be above. A lot of people believe that macros working out to be 40%carbs, 30% protein and fibre are best.

    It's protein.

It's gender neutral and only necessary if your diet is lacking in protein.

I use Optimum Nutrituon Gold. I'm also lactose intolerant, but this doesn't bother me at all.

The protein macros in MFP are set pretty low- 15%. There is a formula to find out your macros. Check out the stickies in the Eat Train Progress group. Mine are supposed to be 30/35/35 but I'm at 40/30/30.

I use protein powder to help meet my macro. I've had issues on the past but with ON, i find it easier to get closer to a minimum 100g :)

Not always... If you don't lift heavy and have too large of a deficit protein won't help as much.

I use Optimum Nutrition Gold too. I add it to almond milk, and it's delicious!

I really want to make a dirty joke.

    However, I won't.

It's still in your mind though.

I started doing protein shakes when I started doing Jay Robb - he sells a great one and has some great recipies. If you do buy from Walmart or GNC - just make sure it is pure protein like whey protein with no additives like creatine. I buy mine from a healthfood store, its NOW and its high in protein and lower in calories. A protein shake can be a great way to get your protein and keep you from over eating carbs if your on the run or in a hurry. You can also add things like flax seed, psyluum seed for more nutrients.

I do one for breakfast with psyluum seed since I have trouble getting fiber and I'm not a big morning eater. It helps me get a great work out for lunch and control my eating over lunch time.
  • I use nature's bounty optimal solutions protein shake, it comes in chocolate and vanilla. it helps me meet my protein goal without eating too much animal protein (i can only eat so much chicken in one sitting..) and I have it right after I finish my workout to keep my metabolism up and replenish lean mass. drinking a protein shake after working out helps ensure your body burns fat and not lean muscle, which happens especially if you are on a low carb diet

No need for it to be one for women.
Though as it happens the one I have now is great and is actually targeted at women; MyProtein MAX Elle True Diet.
I have had others, but this one tastes the nicest.

I have it with unsweetened almond milk, It makes a lovely shake to help get my protein up :-)

    1. If you can hit your protein goal using food then do that and don't worry about protein shakes - they are a convenient supplement more than anything else.
    2. If you can't then find a protein shake you like the taste of and is relatively inexpensive. There is very little meaningful difference between them to justify paying a mark up for it.
    3. Lots of companies will provide samples to try for free or a minimal fee do try them out first to get an idea of what you like.
    4. The best value for money are generally online retailers - avoid places like GNC unless you have more money than sense.
  • I use Muscle Milk. I have one (with soy or almond milk, frozen fruit) after a hardcore workout. Watch the calories though!!

I intake 125+ grams a protein a day. This works for me though. I have been taught to use a protein shake before work outs to assist in muscle grown and sustainability ( I use Vega One or a whey protein such as Isowhey breezers) and then a Creatine protein after suppers sometimes ( filling snack, creatine takes a while to digest) . I eat full proper meals and mostly are based on protein. I just intake a lot of protein to continue the grown and sustainability of my work outs.

I do believe protein intake is necessary but can be ingested in many ways dependent on your lifestyle! So we may not all need the extra protein.

Are you looking at quality or price? I see you are in the UK so I would recommend:

For quality, one of the best is ON Gold Standard Whey - http://www.discount-supplements.co.uk/sports-supplements-whey-protein-optimum-nutrition-gold-standard-whey-2-27kg

For price, one I like the best is Optimum Health Ultimate Whey Protein - http://www.discount-supplements.co.uk/sports-supplements-protein-optimum-health-ultimate-whey-protein-908g-bags

If you want to lose fat but not muscle, eat at a deficit, do some weight lifting and eat over 100g protein a day. I eat about 130g on a good day, including at least one protein shake or mug cake.

And if you want girl specific protein, you can drink it from a pink cup.

I've been trying to kick protein shakes, but if you don't like meat much, and you have a sweet tooth, they are a dream way to reach your protein intake. My only suggestion for someone who is trying to maintain or lose is to get one with a higher protein content for lower calories. Some are designed for gaining and will have up to 100 more calories per serving, while some will have the same amount of calories as others with 10 less grams protein. Find one that has about 100-150 calories per serving at around 20 grams of protein. Don't exceed 1-2 servings per day. It's yummy, but it shouldn't be pushing real food out of your diet.

Like everyone said its just a supplement. But there are different types of proteins... i use Optimum Nutrition Natural 100% Whey and ON Natural 100% Cansein. whey is a fast absorbing protein that is useful after a workout so that your muscles have enough protein readily availible to repair the damaged muscle fibers. and Casein protein is a slower absorbing protein that will provide your body with protein over the course of a couple of hours while whey will be absorbed whithin 30 minutes or so.

I'm a woman and I like gnc soy 100. It's low carb, low fat, only 130 calories. Ideally you don't want a protein shake to be high cal or carb if you are looking to lose weight and just supplement protein needs.

I like Spirutein Vanilla Whey protein powder. I usually will combine it with V-8 Fusion juice or milk and drink it as a snack smoothie.
