I've been in total NC with my ex for awhile now due to finally getting totally fed up with the way that he's jerked me around. He's been texting and/or calling nearly every day during this latest period of NC but I have just been completely ignoring him. Today for some reason, he's tried to contact me much more than usual although I haven't heard from him at all the last few hours. I'm sure that's probably because he's with his girlfriend. On the last voicemail he left me a few hours ago, he left a pretty angry sounding message where he was swearing and basically demanding that I call him back. On that message he also said "call me the **** back or else I'm going to have to call your mom or something to figure out what's going on". He's acting like he doesn't have a clue why I've been ignoring him. Is he really ignorant enough that it doesn't dawn on him that maybe him trying to initiate reconciliation talks with me when he's clearly not serious because he still has yet to dump his girlfriend is a real turn off to me?? I mean he must get that right and is just playing dumb??

In any case, now I'm all stressed out because I definitely don't want him bothering my mother & I think it's totally ridiculous that he even said that he might contact her. I especially don't want him contact her because I'm worried he might say something to her about how I owe him money. She has no clue that I borrowed money from him and I really don't want her to know as it was a pretty large sum of money and I know she'd most likely be disappointed and ream me out about it & I just don't want to hear it.

So, what should I do? Do you think I should just continue totally ignoring him or should I text him back to tell him to leave my mother alone and not contact her? All talking to him ever seems to do is upset me as nothing ever changes as he's never actually serious about reconciling & I'm definitely not happy being just friends with him. So, I'd really rather not have to break no contact with him anytime soon.

    Or just tell him?

Call me crazy but I ALWAYS prefer the strait forward approach
  • Tell him what Lon?
  • More Info:

I owe my ex approximately $2,000. While I have otherwise been in complete NC with him for the past several weeks, I have sent him one text per month regarding my payments to him. After a long break from paying him (because HE kept telling me not to worry about paying him back right now), I just recently resumed my payments to him a few months ago. Once I resumed my payments to him, it was right around that same time that I went NC with him. I sent him one text a few months ago letting him know that I had just sent a payment to him. All I could afford to send him that month was $25.00 so that's what I sent him. I enclosed a very short note with the payment basically just saying "Enclosed is $25.00. I will send you another payment next month". However, I was extra tight on money last month so I wasn't able to send him anything at all. So, I sent him one text a few weeks ago letting him know that & I told him that I would send him another payment next month (as in this month/June). He never responded to that particular text at all.

He sent me a text the month before last after receiving that $25.00 from me that said "Why did you send me money when you can't afford it? I feel bad". I just ignored that text and then he left me a voicemail about a week later saying "Hello? You need to call me back. I didn't even cash the $25.00 dollars". I didn't resume my payments to him recently because he demanded it (if anything he kept trying to get me to hold off on paying him). I decided to resume my payments to him because I finally realized that he was using the money as a way to control me & basically force me into having to stay in contact with him even though he has a new girlfriend. I figured if I sent him money every month (well almost every month), that he could demand that I call him back but would really have no right to do that as long as I was consistently sending him payments & showing a good faith effort on my part to try and pay him back.

He once again texted and called me several times today & as usual I ignored him. These were the last few texts that I got from him today.
"You're so f*****g stupid to ignore me. I'll make sure you pay all you owe plus interest if we don't reconcile".

He's told me quite a few times that i don't owe him any of the money if we reconcile. I know that. I get it. I have no intention of trying to rip him off and not pay him back so I don't know why he's being such a jerk like this! I'm sure that he really would want the money if we don't reconcile. However, I think he's also trying to use the money as a tool right now to try to force me to have to go back to being phone buddies while he's with his new girlfriend and I refuse to let that happen! I tried staying in touch with him this past year while he had a GF and all it ever did was make me miserable. He would constantly try to initiate reconciliation type talks with me & then as soon as I'd agree to give things another try nothing would change and he'd still stay with his GF. That's actually a pattern that's been happening for the past few years now since he broke up with me. Things ended after 2 or 3 months max with the other girls that he dated after our breakup but the most recent one he's been with for about a year now.

He even sent me a text earlier today that said "I told you when I'm ready to get married I'm going to marry you". I ignored that text too but the first thought that went through my head was wow, I bet your girlfriend would be really thrilled if she knew you were saying that to me & also it was just weird that he said that only minutes after he sent those rude, threatening type texts about the money! You would think that he'd realize that being a jerk to me and saying rude, threatening type things about the money is a really unlikely way to make me even consider ever wanting to reconcile with him.

Also, (I'd be especially interested in what the men on here have to say about this but input from the ladies is certainly welcome too)...
Doesn't it seem like it should be obvious to him that if he actually wants me to take these efforts at reconciliation talks with me seriously that he should first break up with his girlfriend? I mean isn't it pretty unreasonable of him to get angry at me for not wanting to participate in these types of talks when he does still have a GF? I know I was dumb enough to do that before but still...I think maybe the biggest reason he's acting all angry is because I didn't give him a specific reason for why I was going no contact. I didn't want to say something like call me when you're single and maybe then we can talk because I didn't want him to dump her & then get all furious with me if & when I decided that I actually didn't want to reconcile with him. However, not that long before I went NC I did send him a text that something like "I don't have the time, energy or desire to maintain a phone only "friendship" with you so you won't be hearing from me anymore". So, now that I think about it I pretty much did give him a big heads up that I would be going NC soon. He's probably just freaking out now because he didn't believe I'd actually go through with for more than just a few weeks or so.

He can't really make me pay interest on the money I owe him can he?? I'm assuming no but just double checking. There was never any sort of contract or other paper work that he gave me prior to our during the time he was loaning me money. However, I did send him a few texts a long time ago promising him I'd pay him back if he lent me more money so he would have that as proof that I asked to borrow money & promised to pay him back. Charging me interest though?? That seems like it would be a really sh**y thing for him to do, especially because a major reason I borrowed money from in the first place instead of a traditional loan is because he said that he wouldn't charge me any interest. However, I can't remember if he said that during one of our old phone conversations or via text so not sure that I'd be able to get a record of him saying that.

To stop calling, you aren't interested in reconciling and that is the reason you aren't answering your phone.

Find another way to get enough money to pay him in full and then tell him you are done.
Your relationship is toxic to both of you, time for both of you to move on.
This is not how normal, mature, healthy adults conduct themselves.

do not respond to anything he says or does, at all. it's like a reward for his crazy behaviour.

i know this might be hard, but tell your mom about the money, so he doesn't have anything over you. just deal with it. tell her not to respond to him under any circumstances. and you do the same.

no, he can't make you pay interest. if $25 is all you can afford, just keep paying it, consistently. don't let him boomerang-guilt/manipulate you.
  • Lon,
Thanks for clarifying what you meant.

    mustang,
I would absolutely love it if I was able to just write him out a check for the full amount that I owe him & then tell him I'm done/change my number. Unfortunately, my credit isn't good enough right now to be able to get a loan from somewhere else. (If it was, I never would have borrowed any money from my ex in the first place).

Babysit, sell blood/plasma, cut back on anything you do spend money on, etc. Just get this jerk paid back. Make sure you print out a copy of all of his texts too. I wouldn't worry about him contacting your mom. What would he really say to her "Hey, your daughter who I'm no longer seeing isn't texting me back when I send her threatening texts about how we must get back together despite my having a new girlfriend. What gives?" Finally, never, ever, ever go back with him. He's manipulative, verbally abusive, and threatens you. It's one very short step into physical abuse. If you feel you absolutely must reply to him say "You are no longer part of my life. I will pay you back. That is the extent of our contact from this point forward. Do not threaten me or my family or I will take out a protective order."

Unless you have a signed loan document with this person, you need to call or meet him in a public place and tell him, in no uncertain terms, that the relationship in ALL its forms is OVER. PERIOD. The money is a separate (business) issue, and if you two didn't sign a document, then he is SOL (although I think the HONEST thing to do is pay him back!!!!). If you did sign something, you need to pony up everything you can and make it happen NOW.

Your ex sounds potentially dangerous, but I'm not making judgements here, because frankly, I've seen many a GOOD man made crazy by, umm, crazy women. If you owe him the money then you should make EVERY effort to pay him back. Maybe he's just getting pissed because he thinks that you're about to flake out on continuing your payments. $2000 is probably just as much money to him as it is to you. Imagine the situation in reverse. You think you might be sounding like a "psycho ex girlfriend" by now?

The bottom line is you've "made a bed" so to speak. You owe the guy money, and now he's demanding payment. If a continued relationship isn't going to happen (and from the sounds of it, it shouldn't) then you need to do the adult thing and FIND the money. Take a second job, sell something of value, borrow from a relative if possible (that's not ideal either but it's better than an ex). But you first need to make sure he knows there NO future relationship....
  • Thank you very much for your input anemone and bahet. I really appreciate it.

Besides the fact that I think he's being a real jerk trying to discuss reconciliation with me WHILE he's still in a relationship with someone else, the biggest reason I don't want to talk to him is that he clearly lacks remorse for much he's hurt me these past few years. Yes, it was nice of him to loan me the money (if you can look past how a big part of why he probably agreed to it was as a way to control me) but instead of acting remorseful for breaking my heart & jerking me around, he just keeps making excuses. He'll say stuff like "Sorry I just was't ready to be married yet but I told you when I am ready you're the one I want to marry".

Okay, even if that was true that doesn't make it okay that he jerked me around. He could have and should have just stopped talking to me completely unless and until he did feel like he was at the point in his life where he felt he was actually ready to make a serious commitment to me. Also,he's left messages recently where he says stuff to clearly insinuate that he's just pretty much waiting for me to say that I want to reconcile and then he'll immediately be single. I have absolutely no reason to believe him about that because to me if he was really serious he would break up with her and THEN call me up and ask me to please give reconciliation with him another chance. Then, worst case scenario if I didn't want to be with he'd then be free to start a new relationship with someone else since he clearly doesn't seem to be that into his current girlfriend if I'm on his mind that much. So, it seems to like breaking up with his current girlfriend would be win win for him either way! He doesn't seem to see it like that though. There's no way that I'm going to reply back to him and say yes I want to reconcile so please break up with your girlfriend so we can be together. For one thing, he might very well tell me he's not "ready" to reconcile with me yet and then just stay with her. Or, he might break up with her and then get all furious with me if/when I decide that I'd rather not reconcile with him (which is a definite possibility after all the things he's said and done to hurt me). A major reason I'm in full NC with him is to help clear my mind and give me a little more perspective on the whole situation which was very difficult to do when I was still talking to him all the time.

In all honesty, I got through the first post and part of the second before I gave up.

Sorry if it sounds rude, but this is kinda sorta not something you share with people on the Internet.

    Good luck, OP.
  • Spinderella said, in part:
$2000 is probably just as much money to him as it is to you.

Actually, no it's not. I'm a single mom who doesn't make very much money. He however is quite wealthy. His house is totally paid off so he has no mortgage payments. He drives an old beat up truck around so he has no monthly vehicle payment. He owns several different properties and rents out most of them so brings in a good amount of rental income from that plus he also has a successful business that he owns. He's definitely not hurting for money.

However, I consider myself to be a good honest person and since I told him I'd pay him back, I will pay him back the rest of the money that I owe him. He has been contacting me multiple times a day for the past few weeks now. He never even mentioned the money thing until yesterday. 98% of the time when he's contacting me it's to say stuff like "would you consider reconciling if I'd go to counseling with you"? So, yes I'm sure that he definitely wants every penny of that money back if we don't reconcile. However, I think the biggest reason he's getting so p**sed of right now is that it's hurting his ego that I'm not texting or calling him back and just jumping at the mere chance to be with him.
  • Pepper,
Sorry you feel that way. I think that people should be able to post about whatever they want on this chit chat board. People can choose not to respond if it's not something they're interested in responding to.

I would say his anger management issues along with his manipulation and control issues can be added to the new girlfriend issue.
Even if he would dump her, why would you want to be with someone who thinks it's okay to treat you like crap?
Owing him money certainly doesn't justify his behavior.
As a matter of fact, nothing does.
You made two mistakes, dating him and borrowing money from him.
You dealt with one mistake, now deal with the other and be done with his kind.
And don't borrow money from anyone.
    Lesson learned.
  • Thanks for the advice mustang Susie.

I don't know why it doesn't seem to dawn on him that I could probably pay him back a lot sooner if he wasn't calling and/or texting me so much because then I wouldn't be all distracted by him and would be able to work more. Again though, I don't think most of his anger is really about the money especially since last I knew he didn't even cash that last money order I sent him. I think it's more that he can't stand it that his fall back girl isn't right there to give him an ego boost anymore.

I feel like you need to contact him and tell him to cash that last money order.

And proceed to pay off the debt and get the eff out of the situation. Focus on eliminating debt and moving on.

I had a similar situation with a guy I wanted no further contact with. He threatened to tell my mom some pretty horrible things about me (some true, some not) if I didn't give him a chance, so I called my mom and said. "Mom? Do you love me? Can you trust me to make the right decisions, like the way you raised me to?" She was confused, but said yes, of course. so then I said "David is going to try to call you and tell you all sorts of terrible things about me. He is trying to hurt me. If he tried calling you, can you please not answer? Or if he comes to the your house, not let him in? He is just trying to cause trouble for us, and I want nothing more to do with him. Can I have your full support on this?" She was very understanding, and promised to not answer his calls.

Of course, he never did try calling, the lying manipulative weasel that he was, and we never heard from him after a few months. And as an added bonus, my mom and I got closer from it, and she started to view me as more of an adult who can handle emotional stresses with maturity.

First text or email him. Tell him you aren't interested in reconciling. You aren't interested in being friends. You aren't interested in him.

You acknowledge you still owe him X (what ever your balance is by your records) of dollars. Ask if he disputes the amount. If he does, ask him to name the amount he thinks you owe. If the named amount isn't too much different, $25 to $50 difference, then accept that amount and state how much you will pay each month, minimum and plus if you can, so say $10 and if you can pay $25, then do that. Don't set the minimum for anything higher than you can for sure pay each month.

If he lists an unreasonable amount of money, tell him that you feel it's unreasonable. Name all payments you have a record of, minus the initial amount. Tell him that you choose to borrow the money from him because he stated there would be no interest.

Then tell him to not contact you in anyway other than writing text/email, and even then only concerning the money you owe him. Tell him he is not to contact any of your family members. Tell him that doing so will make you speak to the local law enforcement concerning a restraining order, a judge would likely grant one based on the contact me or else texts... also, if this were to happen, they would likely have you start paying money you owe him through the court and eliminate all contact.

The other option is to tell him no contact other than about the money, and only to you, or you send copies (most phones have a way of doing screen shots) of his texts about reconciliaion/dumping his girl to the current girlfriend, and let her decide how she feels about it.

    options:

    1) say nothing and rely on his telepathic ability to figure it out
    2) say something, but make your true point so cryptic that he must rely on his years of training at the CIA to figure it out
    3) say it directly

    i'd go with 1).

I think you have two choices.

    1. Pay him back right now, in full, even if you have to beg, borrow or steal. Okay, maybe don't steal, but seriously, this $25/mo thing is ridiculous. At this rate, the soonest you'll have him paid back is almost 7 years. And since you can't even commit to paying that every month, probably longer. This guy doesn't sound stable. Depending on the timeline, it's possibile that he's beginning to feel like you took advantage of him and are bailing on owing him money. But I think it's more likely that he's only bringing up the money b/c you've made it clear that this debt is the only reason that you have for speaking to him. Do you really want this guy harassing you for the next 7+ years? Have a garage sale, become an egg donor, get the money from your mom, whatever. Pay him back and take away his power NOW.

    OR

    2. Call him and tell him that you will pay him in full when you are able, but you will not be making monthly payments. Let him know that you will no longer have contact with him, and any attempt by him to contact you, will result in a protective order. Tell him that if he becomes tired of waiting for you to come up with the funds, he can contact you by filing a lawsuit and having you served. Lawsuits aren't that scary. Google is your friend and can teach you how to respond and appear pro se, if he ever decided to take you to court.

Best answer call your mama continue with no communication. He's learning you don't need him and freaking out. Keep sending the monthly checks and keep meticulous records of those payments wether he cashed them or not is not your worry better yet send cash and keep the ATM withdraw receipts maybe send certified.

The pay in full advice is better than you'll be forever done with him
