Has anyone out there bought an item in a lower size (for example I am a size 16 and bought a 12) to help motivate them and had it work?

Not intentionally. I did recently order a dress that was too snug. Rather than sending it back, I decided to keep it for when I can fit into it.0

No, it would make me too impatient to fit into it, and that might make me discouraged.
But more importantly, I tend to be quite frugal and I couldn't buy something that I might be already tired of when I actually can fit into it.0 -
Did not deliberately buy it, but motivation was get a 36" waist belt, achieved last year and 46" belt now history0

I keep anything that is too small that I Had before but I won't buy something a size or two smaller. I try not to spend money if I don't have to and buying a pair of pants for example that are too small wouldnt' be right... for me. How do you ever know you will fit into them properly when you lose?0

I have a shirt that I am aiming to fit into. But usually I don't do that. Unless it's something I realllly want.0

yeah... my WEDDING dress haha Last time I checked it ALMOST zipped up.
Ive lost 7 pounds since that fitting so... I'll try it on in a week or two... I think it will fit now!
Hopefully since my wedding is July 20th!0 -
I have a closet full of clothes that I love that used to fit and a pair of jeans my mother-in-law bought be, thinking they would fit. So far, it's mostly been really discouraging to try these things on from time to time, but it is definite motivation for me. I'll be damned if I'm buying a new wardrobe! And I know the second those brand new, tag-still-on, skinny jeans fit will be a proud moment.0

I do this all the time.
Last month I made it into a hoodie and shirt I had bought when I started in November, so I replaced that with another shirt(s).
I actually keep them hung up on hangers on my bedroom wall - I personally find it highly motivating.0 -
yep mountain bike shorts, usually cost around $120-180 I currently have a size XL that are too big so I ordered a medium I can put them on and do them up but I need to lose a few more pounds to be comfortable and so its motivated me to get of my *kitten* and get in those shorts0

Thanks for all your responses guys.
I did buy a shirt that was a size 14 and I'm currently a size 16 (new relationships are the worst) but my reasons for losing weight is because I have loads of jeans that I can't fit in to anymore and refuse to buy anymore and my jeans are starting to hole up!!!
Have you any of you tried the 5:2 diet?0 -
Yes! They were a pair of UK size 10 (Us size 4) jeans and I could do them up in the changing rooms but they cut in a lot. 6 weeks later and I fit in them without it being uncomfortable, 3 months later and they are my favourite pair of jeans, so comfy!0

Yes.
Right before my wedding in 2011, I bought a pair of size 1 shorts. Back then, I couldn't get those jokers beyond my knees. Now, I can put them on and zip them up and sit down comfortably. They are still too small/tight, but I am not at my goal body fat of 16% yet, so I will just keep working until I get there. For my wedding, I was wearing size 11/12. I currently wear 3/4 and some 5/6 depending on the brand. I will be in that 1/2 before the end of summer.0 -
I bought a shirt the other day that was a "small." To be honest, I would have bought it in my size if they'd had it, but it was on clearance and it was the only one they had. I really love it so I'll just use it as motivation.
I bought a shirt this past weekend in my current size that I really love so I'm going to go back today and buy it in a couple of sizes smaller so that I'll still be able to wear it next year.
I will say that neither of these shirts was very expensive; otherwise, I would have not purchased them.0 -
Oh yes loads!! and it's a great feeling when you can finally fit comfortably into the clothes :happy:0
