Serving size 1 pouch.. 2 servings per pouch?

My wife bought some of those tuna in water that comes in a pouch and I am mildly confused about how I should count the nutritional information. All of the foods I eat I add myself and don't use the ones in the database, I add everything directly from labels before I open or eat them. I have the Bumble Bee Premium Light Tuna in Water, the entire pouch is 2.5oz (71g). The serving size is 1 pouch (71g) but it has 'about' 2 servings? How does it have 2 servings if the suggested serving is the entire pouch?

Do I just add it as 70 calories, etc... Or do I double it for 140 since it has 2 servings in a 1 serving pouch? I took a screenshot of the nutrition label from the official Bumble Bee website for you so you can see what I am talking about. Thanks!

I would tend to think that it is 140 calories in the pouch. I get frustrated when nutrition labels are confusing! I always get confused on popcorn- I wish they would just tell me how many calories are in the whole bag, popped- I'm obviously not going to eat unpopped kernels, and who actually only eats a cup of popcorn???

I can see why you're confused. In the UK they have to give the information per 100 grams as well as per serving (if they choose to give the "per serving" info at all).

How do the figures compare with other "tuna in brine" entries in the database? I've just looked a few up and found another area of confusion - many brands are listed as "drained weight" but presumably the weight of your pouch is not drained.

Looks like a reason to buy another brand next time... :-?

Haha it's messed up. Weigh it so you get the accurate calories.

I use Chicken of the Sea in the small cans. For 76 g or 2 oz, it's 70 calories, so I'm thinking that 70 calories for your similar sized pouch is accurate. The 2 servings is most likely a typo, and they might appreciate your feedback if you were willing to shoot them an e-mail.

I looked up this exact same version of my tuna and some say "Serving 1 pouch" but I can choose 1 pouch or 2 servings which doubles it and the other half just have the choice of 1 pouch. I live in the US, but I've never seen this before and I track every single thing I eat. I'm leaning towards just making it 1 pouch for 70 calories and labeling it as 1 serving per pouch. I guess if I am eating an extra 70 calories unknowingly or about double the nutritional information, at least its a lot better than other foods I suppose.

Weigh it. You generally should be anyways. For every 71g of weight count the nutritional information 1 time... for less than that divide and figure the percentage and apply that.

Using another site 1 oz of light tuna in water, drained solids is 32 calories and 3 oz is around 99. I think someone just messed up on the package printing.

The whole pouch = 1 serving (71 cals). There is 1 gram of fat (9 cals) and 16 grams of protein (16*4=64 cals) for a grand total of 71 cals, as indicated on the pouch.

Thank you everyone, I just submitted an email to Bumble Bee with my Tuna Pouches label codes and submitted a picture of the physical label in hand. I thought maybe this was some weird new way they are doing label info, so I asked here and I'm glad I did!

    Thanks again!
