When I work out i go really really hard. Otherwise i kind of feel like I am wasting my time. However at the end of my session I am completely sweaty. Should I be holding back a bit? I personally don't mind, but is there something about gym etiquette that I am ignoring by being a sweaty mess?

Me personally, I don't care. People get pretty upset about it some places, I'm lucky I don't have to endure the masses of a public gym. Thank God for our work gym and my garage gym. But I do agree, just wipe the machines down when you're done and it shouldn't be a problem. I sweat like crazy too, just keep a towel around.

My own personal view is that if you're not sweating hard then you're not working out hard enough!! It's like proof that you put the effort in!! Just clean down the machines ect. In the gym near me there are spray bottles of cleaner on machines to clean down.
It would beclike trying not to get sand in your shoes on the beach... They go hand in hand!!

If I'm not soaked in sweat when I finish a workout then I take it as a sign that I didn't work hard enough. You definitely need to wipe your sweat off the equipment when you're done, but don't be afraid to sweat. Anyone that gives you a hard time about it probably needs to spend more time trying to work up a sweat and less time worrying about what others are doing.

    Eh? Sweat away!!

I always think it looks really weird if somebody is working out and looks dry as a bone, especially if they are on the treadmill or something. In fact, it makes me want to turn up the speed on the machine to ensure they perspire

You're in a a gym it's ok to sweat. But don't try to gauge how hard you're working out by the amount you're sweating, because it's not an accurate way to measure how hard you're working out. Generally speaking, heat causes you to sweat more in order to keep your body cool. It has little to do with calorie burn; however, people falsely make this connection since when at room temperature, you heart rate goes up during exercise which causes you to sweat more. Sweat is a by-product of burning calories not the cause of it. What burns fat is using more calories than you consume, thereby creating a calorie deficit. Thus, the energy needed to fuel your body during exercise comes from your body fat stores. While sweating by itself is not a way to burn more body fat, increasing your heart rate is. The higher your heart rate is, the more calories your body burns for a given time. That's why cardio is great for burning calories since it keeps your heart rate high for a long time. One caveat about water weight. It is true that you can lose weight via sitting in a sauna and doing nothing. HOWEVER, this is short term water weight, not body fat. Do not be confused. It will come back as soon as you start replenishing your body with liquids as it should. It is not healthy to be dehydrated. So unless you are weighing in for a professional fight or something, don’t try to sweat to lose weight. Rather create a calorie deficit for yourself.

I think he/she was just asking if it's okay to sweat at the gym. The answer is a resounding YES! By all means, sweat away!

Like they said, take a towel, and definitely use that sanitizer stuff on your machines when your done.

Though I will say, if you have a rash or something gross like that, please cover it. When I first joined my gym I got a rash from one of the machines, it took months to get rid of!

Well, historically speaking, the more sweat that comes from my body the more calories I've burned. I know that sweat isn't always a good indicator of work, but for me at least they do seem to go hand in hand.

If you're sweating while working out, you can guage the efficiency of a workout from the amount of sweat if you know your body, the more oxygen your muscles demand the more sweat your body will produce, or the higher the body temp the more sweat your body will produce to cool it. Those who sweat more don't burn more calories than someone who does not sweat as much doing the same activity though. Back on topic though.

nonono, obviously i know that some people sweat more than others, while working out, and this does not mean they are burning more calories, necessarily. but i also see a lot of people at the gym who are just a littttttle bit sweaty compared to me. i do not have any rashes and i do use a towel+ wipe down the machines. After my run or cardio which I do at the end as the sweating is most profuse there, i usually just stretch and get out of there.

I did read somewhere that if you are properly hydrated you sweat less, but am not sure if this is true or not
