I love bananas...I probably eat one a day or one every other day. But I have heard they don't aid in weight loss. Especially when you are battling the tummy bulge. Is this true? Should I stop eating them? It's probably the most potassium I get!

1 banana a day will not make you fat or hinder your weight loss. Watch your cals/macros and you'll be fine Eat what you like!0

i eat 3 bananas a day. eat them in abundance. they're so good for you. the sugar is not a problem.0

Ignore the anti-banana internet meme! If they fit into your macro/calorie allowance, have as many as you like. They are a great source of potassium too!0

I eat 1/day, but you know, they're not that high in potassium, and they're pretty high in carbs. There are much better foods out there, and creeps don't do double takes if you're eating one in your car. ha!0
-
Thanks everyone! I'd say the carbs are probably what would make me give them up. At least on my day off from exercise. I eat them in the car all the time lol, guess I don't pay attention to the creeps! Let em stare! lol!0

The only way that banana will not aid in weight-loss is if you eat that banana after already eating all of your calories for the day. You could eat 10 bananas a day and you'd still lose weight as long as you ate at a calorie deficit.
Bananas are good for you. Keep eating them if you like them.0 -
Thanks!!!0

I love taters too! lol
I think the banana thing started with atkins. They have more calories than a lot of fruit and a fair bit of sugar. I eat them sometimes.0 -

I'm kind of a noob here. what is a macro?0 -
There are no "bad" foods, especially bananas. Don't believe the banana haters out there! BTW - They have some Potassium, but their Potassium content is pretty modest when compared to other foods. Here's a list in descending order (pay attention to the serving sizes). Bananas are down the list toward the bottom.

I have a related banana question. This might be really dumb, so don't judge! haha. I just bought a food scale and I've been weighing everything. Do the banana entries in the food database include the peel? I saw one for approx 130 g and I assumed it was for unpeeled, but when I weighed my banana with its peel on it was 126 g. Without peel it was 99 g. So...are the entries with or without peel?0
-
The way I figured it, I don't eat the peel.0

LOL, I know, and I figured that too but it threw me off that my banana (including peel) was almost exactly the same as the serving size for a medium banana.0 -
Bananas are very high in potassium, potassium and magnesium work well together. And making sure your body get the vitamins and minerals its needs, could help in weight loss.

Expert Insight
Bananas contain 3.1 g of fiber per medium banana and 3.9 g per cup. Consuming enough fiber enables your body to digest all the food you eat more easily and benefits your cholesterol levels, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. A study published in the May 2010 edition of the "International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health" investigated whether obese patients would lose more weight if given a native banana starch supplement. The results indicated that the participants who took the supplement lost more weight than the participants in the control group.

Try apples, berries and kiwi, instead. My favorite food that is potassium rich is the avocado. Avocados provide many general health benefits, in addition to its fat burning benefits due to its vitamin E and glutathione, which protects you against tons of diseases including several forms of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and cholesterol. Avocados have 54% of your recommended daily value of fiber, which gives this fruit much of its fat burning abilities.
Sometimes called the alphabet fruit because just one avocado provides your body with vitamins A, C, E, K and B6 so you can be sure you’re getting plenty of body nourishments with each bite. Other vitamins found in relatively large quantities in an avocado include riboflavin, niacin, folate and pantothenic acid.0 -
I find bananas are more filling for longer than apples, peaches, oranges or any other fruit availible year round. I can eat those lower calorie foods, but they don't last as long. Also, I sometimes eat a banana before heading to the gym after work because I can work for longer and not be hangry afterwards before dinner unlike other foods.0

They hinder my bowel movements lol. I do love bananas. I've never heard of them adding to your gut.0

Besides, bananas have been a life saver for my mom, whose been suffering from acid reflux. One banana, and the heart burn was gone!0

I eat at least 1 banana everyday.
Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.
Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes.
But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.
DEPRESSION:
According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.
PMS:
Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.
ANEMIA:
High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.
BLOOD PRESSURE:
This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.
BRAIN POWER:
200 students at a Twickenham school ( England ) were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.
CONSTIPATION:
High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.
HANGOVERS:
One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.
HEARTBURN:
Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.
MORNING SICKNESS:
Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.
MOSQUITO BITES:
Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.
NERVES:
Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system..
Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.
ULCERS:
The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chroniclercases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.
TEMPERATURE CONTROL:
Many other cultures see bananas as a 'cooling' fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.
So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has FOUR TIMES the protein, TWICE the carbohydrate, THREE TIMES the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals.. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, 'A BANANA a day keeps the doctor away!'0 -
