Upon getting a quote at a Just Fitness gym...

Me: Hi! Just want to get a quote.[...]

Clerk: What kind of goals did you have in mind?

Me: I want to lift heavy. I don't have the proper equipment at home and I'd love to shed the pounds while toning up.

Clerk: *balks* How heavy??

Me: *shrug* 80-100 lbs at a time is my ultimate first goal. Not right away, of course, but...<gets interrupted>

Clerk: You can't do that. You have to use smaller weights with higher reps.

Me: That's incorrect.

Clerk: Where are you getting your information from?

Me: <Cites NROLFW, Stronglifts 5x5, etc>

Clerk: If you lift heavier, you'll build muscle without losing the fat.

Me: *Puts my pen down* Yyyyeah, this isn't the gym for me. Have a good day.

Needless to say, I walked out laughing. The women here [and men] are proof that heavy lifting IS THE WAY TO GO. That lady can keep her Barbie weights...I WANT TO LIFT!

I think I woulda had to ask to see her qualifications/find out where she got her damn info. And then maybe stared at her blankly a little while.

You could have said "Look, I'd prefer not to discuss my training program at this point, so do you or do you not have the equipment to do what I want to do, and how much will it cost me?"

I must have hit the jackpot when I found my gym, everything people complain about gyms doesn't usually happen at mine. When I first went in and talked to a sales guy I said the same thing as you "I want to lift heavy" and I showed him the NROLFW and I swear he got a little tear in his eye, he was so excited about my goals and was happy to accommodate me. There is also almost as many women in the free weights area as men. I feel very lucky. Good luck and I hope you find the right gym, that one was not it!!

Depending on the gym, people that you talk to are just there to push programs and have no real idea of what they are talking about.. this usually reflects on the trainers as well.. If they were charging anything over $20 a month its not worth it.

I ran into a bit of this recently. While my goals aren't as lofty as yours, i just reached 20lb dumbbels for chest presses and am so proud (shoulder injury kept me moving very slowly), I wanted a personal trainer for some different exercises. I wanted to use some new weights, make sure my form is good to try deadlifts, etc. (injuries gotta make sure form is right). Well I get a free session with this guy and he starts telling me that I need to build muscle not just burn fat because women think they don't need to do that and you need to lift to build muscle. So I interrupt twice telling him that I already lift. Well he doesn't listen, etc. Except to for the body fat percentage he gave me, total waste of my time.

I hate that people assume because you look a certain way or are a certain gender you act a particular way. I will not be using that trainer ever and another woman told me she had him and same thing.

LUCKY! I kind of miss my old gym now...I quit it after a month almost a year ago. Free weights galore and women that used them. Never should have done that!

Wow, hence why I would never trust any advice from a gym worker. What are there qualifications again and how many years of education do they need to dispense advice?

I guess you were supposed to have some cliche goals...oh I want to lose X amount of weight, lose my butt, thighs, and stomach, and lots of cardio. I dont want to get too strong though ugh women weight lifters look ucky.

I don't understand why you left unless you were planning to use the gym's trainers.
