A) We are not doctors, so you should probably talk to your doctor about this.
You haven't told us how tall you are and how much you weigh. That is important. If you are 4 foot tall and weigh 70 lbs, that may be enough food for you, if you aren't, you probably need more.
C) Eat your egg yolks, they are good for you, I promise.0 -
Do not eat at a deficit while pregnant. Eat at least your maintance calories plus your exercise calories. See your doctor for proper nutrition however you should not try to lose weight now.
And I agree with the above poster... eat the egg yolks. They are not the enemy once made out to be.0 -
My first response: Are you ****ing kidding me?!
My second response: Go to your doctor and you BEST listen to them when they say to eat about 2500 calories a day.
Don't you DARE do anything to put your child's life in danger!0 -

^^Everything this. Please check with your doctor, as eating at a deficit is NOT good for you and baby during pregnancy, unless monitored closely and physician approved.0 -
Please do not eat at a deficit while pregnant. This is not the time to add that stress to your body.
Discuss your food needs with your doctor, and see if you can get your hands on this book (written by an ob-gyn, and recommended by thousands of ob-gyns):
It is informative, simple to understand, and very helpful.0 -
Probably not. I'm eating 2000, I'm 9 weeks pregnant and I'm still losing on some days (not intentionally. I was actually at 2600 cals yesterday and it hasn't affected the scale yet) but you should be speaking to a doctor not random internet strangers0
-
From what I have heard before you should be eating TDEE + 400 cals or something like that... might be worth calculating and see if it looks like a good number and speak with your doctor about it as well.0

The menu itself looks ok to me, but the calories appear very much on the low side. Ditto on the eggs with yolk. How far along are you now and where was your weight to start?
I am 18 weeks myself and just double checked calorie levels this morning. General rule is no extra calories needed in the first tri, 340 extra in the second and 450 in the third. That would be from base daily needs. Personally, my base plus second tri level puts me at about 2200 calories a day for proper weight maintenance and I'm 5'9", starting (and holding steady at) 177 pounds.0 -
Are you serious right now? 1400 calories while pregnant? You need to be eating waaaaay more than this, your poor child! Are you trying to LOSE weight while pregnant?? You know you're actually supposed to gain weight while pregnant right?!?! After you pop this baby out if you eat that 1400 calories a day you will have no problem losing the baby weight quickly, but tryin to lose weight while pregnant is a horrible horrible thing for you to do. I swear some people should not be allowed to breed0
-
Thanks, yeah losing weight is not what I want at all. I want to eat enough calories for the baby and get proper nutrition and only gain what is recommended. I don't want to eat for 2 like many do and gain 75+ lbs and use pregnancy as an excuse. I have nothing wrong with egg yolks but I watch my cholesterol and eating the yolks goes over my daily allowance. Heart disease runs in my family so that's the only reason I avoid them and watch these numbers. I can up calories pretty easy by adding in some chicken with lunch but this makes my protien around 150 grams, is that too much?0

I would definitely keep up with the healthy choices because healthy choices are never a bad thing, especially when trying to keep up with the nutrition requirements of both you and baby, but I think you should definitely up your cals to at least mainenance and most likely more, other wise you are depriving the baby, what you do to your body, effects what you do to your baby right now. I would definitely talk to your doctor about exactly how much over maintenance you should be eating... If you have wic, you could also even talk to the nutritionist their for more insight...
edit: internet research:
Eating Healthy While Pregnant
Good nutrition is important throughout the entire prenancy in order for your baby to grow and develop healthily, and this includes not only prenatal vitamins, but a balanced diet. Pregnant women need more of a variety of several nutrients. Recommended daily servings include 6 to 11 servings of breads and grains, two to four servings of fruit, four servings of dairy products, four or more servings of vegetables and three servings of protein such as meat.
Despite cravings and an unusual sweet tooth, eat fats and sweets sparingly, or you will balloon more than you want and will have to lose that weight later. Your extra 300 calories a day can go a lot further on snacks like wholegrain crackers, strawberries or nuts, rather than ice cream bars and Snickers. It is important to figure out your normal calorie intake before became pregnant, and then after the first three months, increase your originally intake to 100 to 300 calories per day.
How Much Weight to Gain During Pregnancy?
The average weight that women gain during pregnancy is 25 to 35 pounds, but this varies greatly depending on if you were underweight, normal weight or overweight when you became pregnant.
According to WebMD, underweight women gain about 28 to 40 pounds during pregnancy and overweight women gain about 15 to 25 pounds. The general rule of thumb is to gain about two to four pounds during the first three months and a pound a week throughout the rest of your pregnancy. Naturally, this is all different if you are expecting twins. With twins, expect to gain 35 to 45 pounds during your pregnancy, which equals about 1 ½ pounds per week after the first three months
It is never OK to loose weight during pregnancy. Both you and your baby need those extra nutrients in order to be healthy. Don't worry if you gain a few too many pounds in one week, as the next week you might not gain quite as much. And if you gain a little bit more than the average woman, just console yourself that once you deliver the baby, if you have eaten healthy and kept up a reasonable exercise regimen, you will be able to get rid of you baby fat in no time.0 -

Eat at your TDEE at least. Baby needs an additional around 300 cals a day. My TDEE if I wasn't exercising like I am (which I didn't while pregnant) was 1850 plus 300 extra for baby puts me around 2150 per day and that is with no exercise at all. 1400 cals is less than most ppl's BMR. Please talk to your doctor you need to be consuming much more than that.0

Lol, calm down everyone, I'm not trying to lose weight. I'm only in first trimester, 8 weeks. I realize I need to gain and that I need to up calories as I get further in pregnancy. I'm eating every 2-2 1/2 hours and the nutrition is all there just need to up my cals. Doctor said 1500 was fine for now but the reason why I posted this is I've heard lots of different calorie amounts ranging from 1500 to 2500 which is a BIG difference. Obiously if I didn't care about the health of my child I wouldn't ask.0
-
Wow, I normally don't get into discussions and am really upset that so many people attack right off the bat! So many assumptions...how does anyone know that she is intentionally eating low or even how far along?!
To the OP - adding chicken would be a great source. Also good fats like nuts and fish are an excellent source. To the menu example posted I would also be inclined to add a carb source with dinner. If you are healthy otherwise, don't stress about the end weight gain. It can come off easily after if you take care of yourself.0 -
And for all the people who think she is harming her baby, calm down the nutrients go to baby first she is doing much more harm to herself. Still a stupid idea to eat so little while trying to carry a baby. You are hurting your body more than helping it.0
-
Just eat to maintain in the first trimester. Lots of people lose in the first trimester due to being sick so I wouldn't sweat it too much. You only need to add a few extra (200-350) in the second and third trimesters. If you are significantly overweight or under, this number could fluctuate.0
-
Quadrupling the "talk to your doctor" advice. The *only* time you should maintain/lose weight over the course of a pregnancy is if you start out morbidly obese and are working closely with your doctor to monitor you weight and nutrition. The general calorie recommendation is to eat maintenance plus 300 calories, but as with all internet advice, anything your doctor says trumps that.0
-
You could always add some snack/protein bars or nuts for snacks, that would help with more calories. Listen to your body. If you feel hungry eat, if not do not force yourself.0
-
God, people are being so rude in this thread. The OP seems genuinely interested in doing what is best for her baby and is ASKING HOW TO DO THAT. Saying "some people shouldn't be allowed to breed" is so uncalled for it's ridiculous. Someone comes on here and asks a legitimate question and this is what she gets. It's no wonder people are always complaining about how everyone on MFP is a rude asshat.0

The cholesterol in egg yolk will NOT raise your body's cholesterol. Eat the yolks-they're good for the baby and you, I promise!0 -

Thanks to those posting suggestions and not bashing me for no reason. My calories need to be raised and I will do. I will aim for 1800 since my maintenance is 1500. As far as saying people like me shouldn't breed, wow, you know nothing about me and you say things like that? Rude people such as yourself with no concern to other peoples feeling shouldn't pass that trait to their children. I eat a lot healthier than most women. My calories may be low but I can easily change that. My intake is full of nutrient dense foods, healthy grain, protien, fiber, dairy and fats which is MOST important. Some women may be getting there 2000 cals in but it might be full of processed junk, fast food and lacking in nutrients. I am obviously concerned with heath based on what I eat.0

This site is not just about losing weight, its about fitness and nutrition. Many people don't just use this site to lose weight but to maintain their weight and easily keep track of their calories and nutrition.0

Dietary cholesterol has very little effect on most people's cholesterol levels. And I am in the same boat with the family history, plus I HAVE high cholesterol, but eating dietary cholesterol doesn't bother it, eating carbs-particularly grains is what causes mine to rise. You may want to get your levels checked regularly with and without eating the yolks to see how it does for you. 3 months either way won't hurt your heart, and there are lots of good nutrients in the yolk.
And 150 grams of protein probably isn't too much.
Other suggestion, double up on the nut butter, unsaturated fats are actually heart protective and do not raise cholesterol.0 -
I am also pregnant, almost 27 weeks along. I had reached my goal weight and was 5'4 and 117lbs well before I became pregnant. I started with eating 1500-1600 calories in the first trimester, I am now nearing the end of the second trimester and have shifted to eating 1800-1900. All my ultrasounds have shown the baby is just above average in size and my doctor tells me I am a "superstar pregnant patient" because of my exercise routines, and my impeccable nutrition. I will eat more in the third trimester when my body lets me know it needs it.
Since I was small to start I am suppose to gain 30-35lbs which I am right on track for… It’s important to pay attention to your bodies signs – your baby will go through growth spurts and you will know when this is happening because you will feel like a bottomless pit those days, that’s a sign you may need to add more calories into your daily routine.
Just make sure you are not feeling light headed, you do not feel like you are starving yourself, and you are gaining the amount of weight your doctor recommends… My doctor said these are the best signs to know that you are giving your baby the nutrition it needs.0 -
Hey guys. She asked the question because obviously she didn't know the answer. No need to jump down her throat and accuse her of intentionally harming her baby. Geesh.0
