When I lived in a dorm, I brought tuna in a pouch.

Tuna, nuts of all kinds, oats, bread, PB, fruits that won't go bad quickly.
If you can bring meals from home do it if a fridge is available to you.

Find out if the room has a mini fridge and microwave before you pack/shop. You'll want a can opener too just in case. Those things will have you set for "dorm cuisine." Don't forget ramen and microwave popcorn for the true college experience :)
  • good food items for a dorm room are

    yogurt
    lara bars or kind bars
    fruit
    string cheese
    bread
    sugar free pudding
    milk
    water
    lunch meat (turkey)
    peanut butter

thats normally the stuff i had on hand in my dorm room
