Our desks raise up as well and maybe this is a dumb question but does just standing burn more calories or something?

I'm not a dispatcher but I work for the 911 center as the Accounting Specialist/HR/Payroll and since I started here 11.5 years ago I have gained like 70 pounds! They LOVE to eat around here!!!

My people have the raising and lowering desks and some of them use it and some not so much, I have just a regular desk though :( I just find reasons to get up a lot during the day now, gotta keep moving :)

HI Kate, I've been a dispatcher for over 16 years and it's been very hard for me to get my weight under control. I've manage to take care of my "dispatcher butt", but am having the hardlest time staying motivated. I was so happy to see so many dispatchers on this site, this is just what I needed. I have to get my weight under control so that I can get my blood pressure down. My trouble spot is my midsection. I'm right where I want to be at the bottom, but am stuck right in the midsection. I need back up!!! lol please help with all the suggestions, I'll except them all right about now.

Shell that sounds like a great idea. Our room is not dispatcher friendly at all and maybe this will be a good Christmas gift to us all.

i'm so glad to see this post, im also a 911 dispatcher have been for 15 years 9 months , ive been trying to do better health wise also, have been counting calories since march 2013 and so far have lost 60 pounds, still have a ways to go, but i'm going to do it. i dont say im on a diet, i just tell everybody when they asked, just trying to do better, i just bought new work pants and they were six sizes smaller, that made me feel really good. i try to keep my calorie intake at 1000 some days i allow myself 1200 to 1300 but go back down to 1000 next day, ive read this keeps your metabolism in check, starting to walk increasing more and more everyday, and keeping my head right. im so thrilled to see this site, us dispatchers need all the help we can get, gotta go, keep positive everybody!

Also a dispatcher not for 911 but for a national plumbing company and we also have a Biggest Loser Contest every year. $20 buy in winner takes all. For 2014 we are going to up the anty and charge $1 a lb gained at weigh in. The goal is to loose weight right! In 7 years I have gained 60 lbs and now am lower then when I started. Lunch time a walk around the building. And I may get in 30 min early and walk around the building before hand. And it absolutely all about planning your food!!! You have to! To much temptation!

SOOOO want a stand up desk!!!

911 Police/Fire/EMS here! I've been dispatching for almost 7 years now and think I have gained close to 10 lbs a year! We do not have the desks that raise but we have a weightlifting gym we can utilize while on duty if time permits. I work a twelve hour shift and usually can make my way up there around 2 am or take a walk if weather permits. Since joining MFP in early November 2013 I have lost close to 13 lbs. In the past I have tried Weight Watchers and Dukan Diet but found both hard to maintain with the ridiculous hours that dispatchers keep. MFP has allowed me those horrible late night splurges but with the knowledge of knowing how much is too much.

Been doing some squats..holy crap those suck!! It's easy and effective when I raise my desk to standing. Might pick up some weights and just keep them here.

In April it will be 20 years dispatching for me, all with the same law enforcement agency. We are on 12 hour shifts as well. The food is hard with the restrictions on what we are allowed to eat in the center, and for the most part we are very limited.

I try to do my little "challenges" at the console when I can, like today, (have to make up for missing yesterday) I have 35 pushups, 100 mountain climbers, 100 triceps dips & 50 squat jumps to do. The only things I'll be able to squeeze in during low radio times would be the push ups. Everything else I'll do around my run after work. I've done planks, Russian twists, crunches, squats, knee raises, butt kicks and even lunges at my console.

Where there is a will there is a way! And...as dispatchers, we rock!!!

I was a 911 EMD a loooooong time ago (over 15 years), but then transitioned to the box. Did that for a long time then went to nursing school, became a Trauma Program Manager and found myself managing a communications center for a air-medical service. So once again I got to dispatch, but this time helicopters!

A stand-up desk is on my wish list. May have to go guy it myself.

We spend a lot of time helping others. Remember to help yourself (not to another doughnut) but to a healthy lifestyle also.

Police/Fire/EMS dispatcher reporting in. I work nights and my partner and I were able to do the 30 day squat, ab and arm challenge. We do have a foot pedal deal but it's not that successful with rolling chairs lol Hardest part is everyone leaving "bad" food in dispatch. Must. Not. Eat....

Not a dispatcher as we aren't allowed to by law where I am but answer calls for emergency services...But, we've had those desks for YEARS. You guys are behind in the times
