I love 'em but I hate 'em. Well, I don't hate 'em -- they are just REALLY annoying.

They expire faster than I think any other fruit or vegetable out there!

I've tried different methods of trying to make them last longer -- sealing 'em up tight in plastic, not sealing them at all and instead having them out and exposed, refrigerating them, keeping 'em on the counter, keeping 'em stored at varying locations in the kitchen -- and NOTHING works.

I don't even wanna think about how many bananas I've wasted throughout my life in not getting to them fast enough.

And still, I feel so compelled to buy more, MORE, MORE...whenever I run out. If they weren't always so dang cheap, I would probably rarely, if ever, buy 'em.

ALSO...I consider them one of the "Goldilocks" kinda fruits -- the ones that you have to get JUST RIGHT in order for them to really be great. If you peel and try to eat a banana when it's too green, you get hardness and somewhat of a sour taste... If you wait until it's turning or has completely turned brown, you get super sweet (in a very bad way) and awfully soggy. You gotta catch it JUST at the right time, when it's perfectly yellow and not too hard or too soft.

    If i have bananas going bad, i just peel them and put them in a ziplock bag, and freeze them. Then later you can chop them up, blend them in a processor and make like an ice cream or something with them. Or use them in recipes. The consistency comes out like ice cream, but you'll get that strong banana flavor unless you add ingredients to it.

    I freeze them and use them to thicken and flavour post-workout protein shakes. I also use them to make various breads and muffins for the kiddos.

    Haha I have to agree. I love my bananas. I eat one every weekday morning with 2 scrambled eggs for breakfast and it keeps me full until just before lunch. I try to always buy a pretty ripe bunch and a pretty green bunch. I'm not the only one in my house that eats them. By the time the first set are gone the 2nd set are ready. And i have noticed if you just wrap the very top part in plastic wrap they don't ripen quite as fast.

    Actually, someone I know recently mentioned to me an idea like this. She said she does this for all of her fruits that she isn't able to get to in time before they start turning bad or she knows she's had for a while.

    I tend to forget about that, but I really should start trying it, and I also need to get a blender or food processor asap (used to have a blender but it accidentally fell and broke and I have yet to replace it).

    Break the bunch up before you buy them. If you won't get through 7 bananas before they get over ripe then just buy 3 or 4.

    I love bananas because they're great in protein shakes and don't need washing because they come in their own wrapping.

    I hate fruits that are a huge effort to eat, like pineapple. Can't be bothered peeling/coring.

    Rather than buy a bunch of 5or6 bananas, I buy 3 yellow and 3-4 green. This way they aren't all getting ripe on the same day.

    I like my bananas super green. I don't like when they're all mushy. Luckily, they stay in the super green phase for a while.

    & it's horrible cause they're one of my favorite fruits but I can rarely even find a batch of all good ones while in the store, let alone when I bring them home.

    I agree with you. My main gripe though is peaches, it's impossible to find good peaches now... they're always hard as brick and go bad before they get ripe enough to eat. Disgusting... and a shame because it's my favorite fruit too.

    One thing I've noticed is when I completely seal bananas, they SEEM to last longer -- as in, they don't turn brown for a while -- but then I'll start to notice the top of them beginning to mold. Am I the only one this happens to?

    And, whenever I've bought more than one bunch, I've tried to get one riper set and another greener set, but...it seems like I've -- more often than not -- had bad luck with the greener bunch, no matter if I buy it alone or as a second bunch to eat after the first. I'm not exactly sure why... So, I typically get ones (and only buy one bunch) that are a mixture of both -- mostly yellow with some green.

    Bananas can be annoying but they're so worth it, I'm willing to take an extra trip to the grocery store every week to get fresh ones. When I grocery shop, I'll just get 1 or 2 with just a hint of green (I don't mind them a bit under-ripe) for the next couple days then 1 or 2 more that are super green to last into the week. Then on Wednesday or Thursday when I usually have to pick up something else I forgot for the week's meals, I'll pick up a couple more to get me to the weekend. And the cycle resarts.

    If they're getting a bit too ripe, I mix them in with my oatmeal or make a peanut butter and banana sandwich/wrap with it.

    Ditto on the suggestion to separate them. Also try to make sure they're not in the sun or a warm spot (like near the coffee maker or stove).

    I'm not too fussy about other fruits but it does annoy me when I buy a huge bag of grapes and they're all sour. Such a waste...

    Wait until the bananas are the ripeness you want them, then put them in the fridge (not in a bag or anything). The peels turn brown but the bananas stay good for a lot longer.

    O and if they are to green you can put then a brown paper bag in a dark place and they ripen nicely.

    Wrap just the stems of the banana bunch in aluminum foil. It buys you an extra couple days. If you're only buying 3-4 at a time and you eat one/day, that should work pretty well for you.

    bananas eh? I wish I liked them because they're so convenient!!

    My man tried this little trick...separate the bananas and place one in each hole of a six-pack carry box. They last a lot longer that way, plus it makes an awesome conversation piece!

    when they get really old I peel them and then freeze them.. I then throw them in my smoothies.

    The banana, the most popular fruit in the U.S., is being threatened by a disease to which it was assumed to be resistant. Will other bananas be appealing to Western tastebuds?

    The Cavendish banana — the vitamin-packed yellow beauty found on grocery shelves in most of the Western world — could be going the way of the dodo during our lifetime, according to The Scientist. Researchers are worried about the Cavendish banana's potential extinction, and for good reason.

    Thought to be resistant to Panama disease Tropical Race 1, a pathogen that virtually wiped out its popular predecessor, the Gros Michels ("Big Mike") banana in the 1950s, scientists now find that some Cavendish are falling prey to the original fungus, and even more are threatened by Panama disease Tropical Race 4, according to The Scientist.

    Since bananas are not propagated from seeds, but instead from identical clone plants called "pups," there is no way to reverse the swath of disease spreading across banana plantations around the world. Panama disease has devastated Asian crops, and spread to Australia and India. Although it has yet to hit Latin America, the U.S.' largest banana supplier, experts say it is a matter of time.

    The disease is harbored in the soil, and spreads via root systems up the plant, moving from one stand of bananas to the next.

    With no treatment for the disease, what's a self-respecting banana lover to do in the face of such a loss?

    The answer is simple. Shop around.

    There are more than 1,000 varieties of banana grown worldwide, according to WiseGeek. Several interesting options can be found from local growers or specialty stores, and while they don't look like the Cavendish, these bananas still deliver huge flavor, a healthy punch of potassium and other essential vitamins. If you're feeling more adventurous, many other bananas types are available routinely in tropical climes like Australia, Southeast Asia, Mexico, Fiji and the Philippines.

    GOLDFINGER

    The Goldfinger, a smaller, heftier banana cultivated in Honduras and introduced in Canada in 1994, is the main contender to replace the Cavendish, according to the International Development Research Center (IDRC). Already popular in Australia, the Goldfinger is resistant to two banana enemies: the aforementioned Panama disease, and a burrowing nematode called Black Sigatoka. It can be eaten green like a plantain, when cooked, but is described as having a more tart-sweet apple flavor when ripe. Bonus points go to the Goldfinger for fruit-salad use — it doesn't turn brown when cut (called oxidation), so is visually more appealing after a couple hours on the picnic table.

    RED DACCA

    To take advantage of the higher levels of vitamin C and carotene than their yellow brethren, the Red Dacca, with a cream to pink flesh and a hint of raspberry flavor, is best eaten when the skin is a deep red or maroon color. Often found dried in specialty stores in the U.S., the banana is sought after for baking and savory meals throughout the world. Originally from India and South Asia, the Red Dacca now thrives in Australia and Central and South America.


    BLUE JAVA

    Also known as "ice cream banana" because of its custard-like consistency when ripe, the small, plump and delicate Blue Java has notes of vanilla when eaten raw. Consumed mainly as a dessert, the "blue" in the name comes from the blue-green tone of the plant's leaf underside and the silvery blue color of the fruit before it ripens into a soft yellow.

    KARAT

    Island Food Community of Pohnpei: Lois Englberger. The orange Fei banana is also known as the Karat in the Micronesian island of Pohnpei.
    Once the most common banana in Micronesia, the beautiful orange-fleshed Karat has become more rare in modern times. The super-smooth texture of the flesh is prized as a first solid food for babies, plus the fruit provides over 100 times the amount of beta carotene than the more common Cavendish. The Karat also contains high amounts of vitamin B2, key for metabolizing iron intake.

    BURRO

    Originally cultivated in Mexico, but now equally popular in the Philippines, the chubby, stubby Burro is known for its firmer, textured cream-colored flesh and slight lemon flavor. The square-shaped fruit has twice the amount of fiber as the larger Cavendish and delivers about 15% of the U.S. recommended daily allowance of vitamin C. The Burro is particularly good for cooking in curries and savory dishes.

    MANZANO

    Known also as the "apple banana" for its slightly tart apple-strawberry flavor, this smaller, denser fruit has a lighter yellow peel than the Cavendish. It's best to eat when the peel has turned quite black. Although slightly dryer in texture than a typical banana, the 4-inch Manzano has a delightful pale flesh and provides about 10 percent more vitamin C than its larger counterpart. Manzanos are grown in Central and South America, the Caribbean and Mexico.

    Rather than buy a bunch of 5or6 bananas, I buy 3 yellow and 3-4 green. This way they aren't all getting ripe on the same day.

    You know what. Besides freezing 'em, this just may be the most practical solution for me because I know I typically like to buy around five or six (all of the same mostly yellow, somewhat green bunch) at a time, because I always figure it's better to get close to a week's worth while I'm at the store, but then I rarely end up getting to eat all of 'em -- especially within the week -- and so that may be my problem. I should probably split it up and in amounts like this. Thank you!

    & it's horrible cause they're one of my favorite fruits but I can rarely even find a batch of all good ones while in the store, let alone when I bring them home.

    YES. SAME HERE. And so often, strawberries can be the most misleading -- they'll look all super-great, juicy, sweet, etc. when you're at the store...and then, once you're home, maybe they are, maybe they aren't. Or maybe half are and the other half aren't. CRAPSHOOT fruits. UGH.
    I agree with you. My main gripe though is peaches, it's impossible to find good peaches now... they're always hard as brick and go bad before they get ripe enough to eat. Disgusting... and a shame because it's my favorite fruit too.

    I completely agree -- I thought it was just me, but now that you mention it, it's been a while for me as well since I've been able to consistently get and eat perfectly ripe peaches. Mmm I wonder why that is.

    I need to start becoming more famililar with the best times of the year for different fruits -- it seems like such a hassle to know and remember, but it may turn out to be the key to a lot of my frustrations. Maybe..lol

    Completely agree! Bananas can be a pain to get to in time. Like someone else suggested, I have been buying a few that are green, and a few that are yellow. That way you have ones that are ready to eat, and then the green bunch will be ready to eat once you are done with the ripe few.

    Now oranges would definitely be on the Goldilocks list for me. I LOOOOVE oranges, but heck if I can ever find good ones. Once in a great while I will get great oranges, but 9 times out of 10, they taste bitter, have hardly any citrus flavor at all, and are hard/void of any juicyness :grumble:

    If i have bananas going bad, i just peel them and put them in a ziplock bag, and freeze them. Then later you can chop them up, blend them in a processor and make like an ice cream or something with them. Or use them in recipes. The consistency comes out like ice cream, but you'll get that strong banana flavor unless you add ingredients to it.

    I must be the only one that likes when the outter skin of the banana is black. To me they are so much sweeter on the inside!

    My husband likes them darn near green! BLEH!

    I don't eat bananas because they makes soars in my mouth, But when i do have some that start to get over ripe i throw three in the blender fill it up with milk add a tablespoon of cocoa powder, milk shakes for the kids. They love them and i love that the bananas are sweet enough that i don't have to add any sugar.

    Yes. That's why I usually only buy 2-3 at a time.

    Kiwi came to my mind first because I like them but when I eat them I get that tingling sensation behind the ears. You know, that feeling you get when you eat something tart and sweet. It's so annoying.

    Red raspberries is another. They go bad in the blink of an eye. I get them home and within a day I see mold starting....irritating!!

    I really luck out when it comes to bananas. I tend to buy them in a bunch of 6 or so. There's about a 2-3 day range (generally 2 at the moment due to the heat) where I'll eat them and enjoy them. Once they're past where I'll eat them, Bill will continue eating them until they hit the point of banana bread ripeness. If they hit that point, I tend to freeze them until I get 4 and then it's time to make the banana bread.

    This is true. I haven't really been buying oranges in a while -- well, regular oranges, anyway.. I've been getting mandarin oranges/tangerines, which I find are almost always great! -- but back when I would get them more often, I found it would just depend. If I was able to get the big ones with the really thick skin -- my FAVORITE kinds -- they were always WONDERFUL. But anything short of that, you wouldn't always know what you were gonna get when you removed that peel..lol.. And actually, maybe that's why I haven't really bought any in a while, come to think of it.

    peel and freeze those bananas great for smoothies and mashed in baking goods and low fat pan cakes made with oat meal...in place of added fat. Never waste... also add to blender with a little PB-2 and you have the best Ice cream even the kids will love.

    I hate bananas. Not because they are annoying but because they taste bad, smell bad and have a bad texture (IMO, of course).

    But I like the term "Goldilocks fruit". I'm totally stealing it.

    For me, the pear is the worst for being Goldilocks. It seems there is a one day window for a pear to be exactly ripe before it goes over the dark (aka mushy) side. But on that one day, it's probably my favorite fruit.
