I did not ask you...

So I went for a early morning lift session. It was arm day... Most days I'm usually the only female on the weight room floor. I don't mind b/c most guys are focused on their own work out that I don't get noticed.
A woman w/ an amazing body (think crossfit body) was there lifting next to me. I was in awe.... While in the locker room.. I asked her how did she get that way. What was were her workout? She said heavy lifting, yoga, and diet. Light cardio.
Another woman (not fit no muscle definition), who was listening to our conversation, decided to add her 2 cents. She said... "No you need to lift low weights at high reps."
Both crossfit woman and I said, "no that doesn't work. Body Pump will not give these muscles. You need to lift heavy to change your body and gain muscles."
I was so annoyed...If I thought the other woman had a great body then I would have asked her. But I didn't. Obviously... I was not impressed with your body b/c I did not ask you

YOUR ARMS *drool*
But yeah, everyone always wants to put in their 2 cents.0 -
Something similar happened to me a couple of days ago. I went to get a quote at a gym and explained to the lady at the desk my goal was to lift heavy. She said that I need to lift low weight with high reps, not the other way around else I'd gain muscle under fat.
Needless to say, I walked out laughing.0 -

Thanks for telling us all!0 -
Lol,
Well least you got a good laugh, Amazing how some people think they have all the answers.0 -
Crazy how everyone you do not ask has their opinion. Like I tell them opinions are like buttholes everyone has one, and I did not want yours! BTW I love your arms!!!0

I probably would have said "sorry - I wasn't asking how you got your body - I was asking *her* how she got *her* body"0

I understand why it would be irritating, but to rule someone's advice out (in general) because of their looks or ability is shortsighted.
Do you think Phil Jackson would have won all the championship rings he did as a coach if he had been playing instead?0 -

This. How dare someone who isn't a fit person try to offer some help, even if it may not be correct! SHUN THEM. STONE THEM!!!0 -
I was so annoyed
really?
You must find day to day life extremely irritating if you get that annoyed over someones opinion.0 -
Perfect time to drop a DYEL.0

ive been told this more than I can count since grade school. instead of being annoyed, educate the person why its not right. really some people just don't know any better because that's what they've been told all of their life.0 -

It might have been different if the advice hadn't been wrong.0 -
no offense to anyone I hope but after my years of being a fit person or trying anyway... i had an over weight gentleman at the gym whom i'd seen many times tell me "more reps, less weight". I've seen this guy many times over the past year and he's not changed a bit in physic.
uh....
first off he just walked up to me and started saying that bc he noticed the 'weight' i was pushing and i was like uh dude, you are tagging me wrong. i want the bulk. he was like uh well a PT trainer taught me that.
It took every ounce of me to say "uhm, yea and how's that workin for ya buddy? really?"
but i just smiled, was respectful and walked away after acknowledging his advice to me that. he has no idea i need to bulk!!!!!0 -

Yep...I am in this camp, I am afraid. Its the sort of opinion I wouldn't share.0 -

I do disagree with her advice. You and "cross-fit girl" have the right idea and are on the right track.
However, dismissing someone because they don't look "good enough" to you can be detrimental to their journey. Their goals could be different than yours OR they are just not as educated.
I get treated and talked to the same way you did that woman. Even though I squat a fair amount of weight and am active and athletic (as in exercise often), I get dirty looks and mean questions. I have had to verbally smack down the men at GNC more times than I would like to count and I carry a picture of me squatting on my Ipod to prove to people I am not the ignorant, fat, slob they assume me to be.
.... you would most likely be one such person I'd need to show the that pic to.0 -

I agree. That dumb woman had the nerve to try to voice her opinion in a conversation. Can't wait to get on the internet so strangers can rip her apart!

My point was... I wanted to look like the cross fit woman and not the other woman. That is why I asked the cross fit woman how she did it. I understand not everyone wants to look muscular or have muscle definition like cross fitters. But I do.
The other woman was thin. I just like having muscle definition on my body. I think that is why there are so many fitness magazines articles about what people do and how they achieved their bodies (i.e. Julian Michaels).
I would not have doubted that you can squat a lot.
I want a certain type of body. I think the best advise would come from a person who has a body that I want.0 -
I'm just going to try and be proactive with this whole thread...

One cannot judge by someone's body or looks on how healthy they are.
The best person to ask advice for getting the body someone else has is the coach/trainer that worked with the person who achieved it. Or better yet, their DNA.0 -

I am actually the opposite. With all the slamming that crossfit gets, the OP makes me happy.0 -
Unsolicited advice is annoying. Unsolicited advice from someone who appears to not know what they're talking about is really annoying. Judging a book by it's cover is offensive.
Be annoyed because someone came up to you and offered you stupid advice. Not because she offered you stupid advice but didn't look good enough to be offering advice.0
