Palm Oil - Opinions?

I'd like to start eating palm oil - the unrefined red kind - and was wanting to know if anyone has had it, what they thought about it, and how it tasted to them. Would it be something to cook eggs in? Thanks....

Yeah, I know about that. I'm sourcing from a place that doesn't do that. So, have you ever had any palm oil? What's it taste like?

I don't think I've ever had it on it's own. I've been trying to get it out of my diet, but it's in almost everything!

I'm not here to justify my decision. I asked a question, and if you don't want to answer it, then that's fine. I've done my research and have found places that are ethically acceptable to me. I'm not going to respond to posts with this attitude anymore.

I've never had the unrefined red, I have used refined in the past. I have heard the unrefined oil has a really distinct flavor and odor. From what I understand, it's best with things that have a strong flavor of their own.

Refined palm is pretty boring. Not a favorite.

I haven't used palm oil but a friend of mine uses it regularly. The only other oils she uses is coconut and olive oils. Try the oil and see if you like it. They have a shortening made with it as well. It's a lot healthier than canola or vegetable oils.

Could you please site source for your alleged S.African produced Palm Oil? Because, I'm sure people here are socially conscious and want to do the right thing.

Don't know why you are so combative.

Orangs have been pushed out of their habitat and are endangered. Too bad you don't care about that.

I thought it was a bad oil. It's in everything and I've been trying to avoid it. I'm just curious to know why someone would choose to consume it. What are the benefits?

I DO care about that, that's why I'm getting my oil (maybe - haven't decided yet) from a continent that doesn't have orangutans as a native species.

Thanks for telling me what I care and do not care about.

Anyone with a bit of time can find a fair-trade and ethical source for this product. You know that.

I know nothing about red palm oil, but I've been using coconut oil and I love it. Also supposed to be a healthy fat and tolerates high temperatures in cooking better than olive oil. Also no worries about it going rancid like olive oil.

Then it's not about the Orangutans? Is there any form of farming that involves trees and animals that you think is ethical?

What is a sustainable source in your mind?

We can do this with shade grown coffee and any other commodity that is grown in sub-tropical regions.

I am surprised that there are sustainable palm oil sources in West Africa, because there were none about ten years ago.
I have always avoided palm oil, because the planting of many square kilometers of palm for palm oil purposes is done by destroying precious virgin rain forest . That by itself is bad enough, especially when it comes to a product that has really nothing special about it once its refined. The fact that Orangutans are driven to extinction through loss of habitat in Indonesia is just another very sad fact of the whole issue. I think sourcing palm oil from areas where there are no Orangutans imo is not such a good idea, because with each acre of virgin rain forest that is destroyed animals are destroyed also.....and that is one way how extinction starts. And all that for a product that can easily be substituted with other oils of equal or better quality.

Unrefined palm oil has a very peculiar and distinct flavor which overshadows the flavor of many foods ( the only thing that I know that is stronger than palm oil flavor is really spicy curry ). It is not awful, but distinct. It also stains everything a very bright orangey red and it is next to impossible to get the stains out of clothing.
