how do i make the half an hour go quicker?

I am the type of person who kind of doesn't like working out. and when i say that i mean i don't like cardio. doing it for a half an hour is soooooooooo long, and incredibly boring.. and i find myself struggling through it, which makes me dread doing it the next time.and it also puts in into the "well i have already burned this many calories, how bad would it be if i stopped? I work out at planet fitness, so i can't use the wifi to access netflix on a tablet, and i have tried reading, but that makes my work out much less intense. i listen to music for the most part but i get so bored.. any ideas on how i can make it more enjoyable so i don't end up quitting, without sacrificing the intensisty?

I don't know anything about your gym as we don't have any of those where I am from. If they offer classes you might want to look into that, something fun. Perhaps you could pick up a sport. I enjoy squash, it's fun and it kicks your butt. Maybe a walking/jogging group with friends or an outdoor bootcamp.

    Invent a time portal.

ETA: Or find a form of cardio that you enjoy doing like boxing or basketball. If I was sticking my butt on a hamster wheel a half hour would seem like forever too.

In the past, I've played my workout vids on my computer and turn it down low (I've done it enough times I don't need to hear the instructors prompts) and then watch a movie or TV show. And by watch, I mean that I get the gist of the show but it's enough to distracts my as to how slowly time is moving. Good luck.

Find something you like and do it. 30 minutes goes faster and better when you like what your doing.

or just pull up your big girl panties and do it.

Do they have classes you can go to? I find that a half hour class goes much quicker than when I work out on the treadmill for half an hour.
If not, I find the time goes quickest on the treadmill when I do one minute sprint and one minute walk because I have to keep switching between speeds.

There are plenty of different forms of cardio you can do. If you don't like the elliptical or the treadmill, take a zumba or spin class. Go running outside. Try something different.

If you HATE it, you might not keep up with it. So try different forms of cardio till you find one you like.

cover the thingie with the clock numbers on it. let the machine go for the hour or whatever they are set to stop at. even if you stop sooner it will at least be from sheer exhaustion not boredom.

put music you LOVE on. Not just any music. don't watch news or anything boring. only a really engrossing program, or television with pretty happy fit people.

finally, change to a workout you actually like. check out the classes at your gym. get a bike or something.

swimming makes time fly by :) But you could do 10 min (as a warmup) cardio then do a lifting routine :) Lifting will have better results, and to me is a lot more fun and less drawn out :) Also have you tried zumba, or playing a sport for your cardio? If it doesn't feel like "exercise" you won't be paying attention to the time :)

For the people suggesting classes, PF doesn't have classes. It's a bare-bones gym: rows of treadmills, ellipticals and stationary bikes, and a weights area.

To the OP: I workout at a PF, and I will sometimes plan to go (when I don't feel like working out) at a time I know a decent TV show is on, and then grab a machine in front of the TV playing that channel. I don't use the audio link, but listen to my own music. But I can read the captions and watch what's going on. It works the other way, too: if the TV in front of my favorite machine is showing a show I can't stand, I suck it up and use a different one so there's something I can bear to watch.

Have you tried the 30 minute circuit area? There's enough variation to what you're doing in there that it's not boring, and your heart rate would stay high enough that you can count it all as cardio.

EDIT: changing up what you do as cardio makes a difference, too. Treadmill one day, elliptical another, etc. And use the different programs on the machines: 30 minutes goes faster doing the "Around the world - hills" program on the elliptical than 30 minutes all at the same difficulty.
  • Daydream - sounds weird, but to pass the time faster I think through problems, plan stuff mentally, or just daydream. If you can workout on a machine close to a window, I like to watch people outside (I'm such a stalker) and that passes the time too lmao. The last one is a little weird, I realise, but you do see some interesting things lol!

Oh. Okay then...get a new gym.

Go out on your workouts. Instead of sticking yourself on a boring treadmill, go to your local park and see the sights. I know the visual stimulation helps me in my workouts.

I can be the same way. Here are things that help:

Pounding music with lyrics I really enjoy. Sometimes I will play one or two songs on a loop.

Intervals for 10 to 15 minutes followed by steady state cardio for 20 to 15 minutes for a total of 30

    Switching machines: Treadmill, bike, elliptical.

Trying to stay in the moment; thinking about what I'm doing right now, not how much I have left to do.

Closing my eyes and holding onto the treadmill during some of the steady state portion.

Breaking up the session: 3 to 5 minutes warm up and then I reset the machine. 15 minutes intervals and then reset. 15 minutes on the same or a different machine.

Gadgets and apps: Heart rate monitor, exercise app on smartphone that keeps track of sessions.

I don't usually watch TV, but I could only do it during the steady state (slow) part of my cardio workout. TV isn't stimulating enough to motivate me during the intense part.

Using the commute as part of the exercise. The last time I decided to walk home briskly as part of my steady state exercise instead of doing it on a machine in the gym. Two birds with one stone. But I had to make sure to keep moving.

I do the cardio after my weight workout. You're supposed to do weights with your full strength.

Incidentally, I just joined a no-frills gym similar to Planet Fitness; in fact, Planet Fitness was a possibility and is across the street.

I second the suggestion about 10 minute cardio warmup followed by heavy lifting. it is more fun and much more effective, in my opinion.

a 30 minute workout is 5% of your day. if you don't want to dedicate the time, then don't. but seriously, suck it up. you can spend the same amount of time watching tv or sitting on facebook, etc. without even thinking about it.

Try using multiple machines. 10 on the treadmill, 10 on the bike, 10 on the elliptical.

Personally, I don't like cardio "exercising" but I love walking and riding a bike so I hit a trail near my house.

God, I hate cardio on machines. I don't mind sweating and getting my heart rate up, but I just can't make it work at the gym. Those evil little voices in my head start trying to convince me it's time to stop about 5 minutes in and any time after that feels like a thousand years. I've tried switching machines (elliptical, Stairmaster, and treadmill for five minutes each) but it's only somewhat better.

I'm done fighting it and am making the permanent switch to cardio classes and walking outside (since I'd die running in this heat. Ugh.)

Plan to get to the gym when something good's on tv. I tried to plan my trips for when Ellen would be on. Ellen makes everything more fun. Even treadmills.

    Find better music.
Run outside and enjoy the scenery.
Or really, suck it up, it's just half an hour.

I would ditch the machines too if I didn't get a much better workout from them. So I try to get on them a few times a week.

Personally I went onto iTunes and loaded up on some songs specific for working out within a certain bpm (beat per minute) range. I chose to stick around 130 bpm. Using this music on my iPod while I work out on the elliptical for 60 minutes makes the hour FLY by. One of my favorite songs is from the album "Work Out 2011 - In the Mix, Vol. 5 (130 BPM)," song entitled "Viking (Original Mix)" by Orjan Nilsen. Healthy living to you all!! <3

I don't know the PF places but are there individual tvs? just watch something , anything, a 30 min sitcom, the news, discovery, whatever. Or if you can use your tablet, then upload videos onto the tablet and watch them. or music is good. thirty minutes is not that much (I do 65 minutes on the elliptical most mornings). WHen i first started, i used to give myself 10 minutes (or 5 or 7, whatever) at level 1/pace X, then I would go to level 2/Pace 2X and so on. that made time go faster.

Or as others suggested - switch off machines - do 10 minutes treadmill, 10 minutes bike, 10 minutes elliptical.

Do group fitness classes!!! seriously they go so quick. I cannot stand using the equipment in the gym because I get so bored and I don't work as hard so i do classes almost everyday.

Find something you think you will enjoy and try it at least 3 times before giving up, it will be tough at first but it won't be long before you love it :)

If you can do it safely, keep your eyes closed and engross in your music. It makes the time go so much faster for me.

You need to change your mentality. I used to HATE working out, and still don't LOVE it but I like it enough to do it almost daily. The reason is because I know exercise is the only way (other than eating right) to change my body. When you dislike the shape you're in more than you dislike walking or biking, then you'll start pushing yourself more and exercising longer than 30 minutes with no problem.

I've thought that it would be wonderful one day to exercise with a purpose, say, train for a triathalon. But I'm not ready for a commitment like that. For now, it's artificial exercise.
