I've been interested in Paleo for awhile but never tried it because dairy isnt allowed. I'm thinking of doing it again and using coconut milk in my coffee instead of half and half. Right now i make green smoothies but i know the yogurt isnt allowed so I'm again using coconut milk instead. I also use rolled oats, are these allowed?

Why not just go modified paleo?

From what I know of paleo any type of grain (oats, flour, etc.) are not allowed. Milk, whey protein, yogurt, cheese, etc. are not allowed. Fruit is allowed in smaller quantities and peanuts are not allowed.

Frankly this "diet" is simply an elimination diet. It takes out the common foods that cause irritation in the digestive system of some people.

Paleo is not supported by archaeology as the way ancient people ate. It is simply a fad diet and unless you count calories you could easily eat more calories of meat, vegetables and nuts than your body burns.

You could try cutting out dairy for a few weeks or grains for a few weeks and see if your digestion improves, but that is really all paleo does. It remove foods that people are commonly allergic or sensitive to.

They are not allowed, but no one says you can't make your own version of the paleo diet! I did it, but had to stop due to my calcium deficiency.. so I allow myself milk now.

In one of few studies done concerning the paleo diet several individuals had calcium and vitamin D deficiencies. It is a good idea if you elect to follow the restricted eating plan that you get a wide array of vegetables daily and take a multivitamin.

I'm trying to research this now but I keep reading different things, it's so confusing. One site says certain things are allowed, some say it isn't then others say in moderation. I'm starting to think its not worth it

Please don't worry about what's allowed on Paleo. It's just one person's idea of what he thinks cavemen ate, and there's no real science behind it. It's just another fad diet that for some reason is getting lots of media attention.

Cavemen in different parts of the world obviously ate different things, as different kinds of food were available in different regions.

Yep. Take what you want and leave the rest. Read what they have to say about various nutrients and decide for yourself if you want to include a category of food.

But remember that human beings are opportunistic omnivores who settled nearly every ecosystem on the planet in "caveman days" and found something to eat everyplace we went.

If humans hadn't been eating grains, we wouldn't have wound up domesticating them. It's not like Caveman Grog looked out the cave door one day and said "I never, never eat the seeds of those enormous stands of wild grass. But let's mount dozens of tiny flint chips onto curved branches, cut a bunch of it down, bring it back to the cave, and save the seeds to plant next year!" Of *course* people ate seeds (grains). People ate [ieverything.[/i] That's kinda how we roll.

    Try 'primal blueprint'....a little different.

Why not just eat the foods you like, hit your calorie and macro goals, and be happy with your diet and lifestyle?

Look into primal instead of paleo.

I was doing a "Primal" Paleo version. (My body doesn't react well to grains)

My best advice is to research, research, research...and like a lot of others here will tell you, everyone will have a different opinion of what is and isn't allowed. I eat, dairy, and some rice, and carby veggetables, except for corn, but mostly because it is GMO, trying to stay away from GMO. You still have to follow a calorie allowance. So if you're not supposed to go over 1400, you still have to stick to that, even if you're eating Paleo.

For the most part, I try to stay away from processed foods, I no longer ingest artificial sweeteners, and try to eat balanced meals. I eat some bread, but if I do, I make it whole grain (which isn't Paleo) Make up your own version, listen to your body. Your body will tell you what it can and can not handle, then from there, watch the over all intake, and you'll feel better, and look better, and still lose weight.

Plenty of paleos still use dairy and many refer to it as eating Primal which was made popular from 'The Primal Blueprint' by Mark Sisson, he has an awesome site called marksdailyapple.com with a vast resource of free information and answers to common questions. Dairy or lactose effects everyone differently. It is all about finding what works for you.

For me personally, I recently completed 6 weeks on Paleo, and I did a modified structure (80% on, 20% off). My modification included some dairy - for example, a splash of half and half in my coffee in the morning and greek yogurt, when I've felt like having it.

Almond milk and Coconut milk are great alternatives, and are really delicious!

Truthfully, I've pretty much given up dairy to the point that if I have more than what I've noted above, I get ill.

As far as grains, I still allow myself to have steel cut oats, and I'll have this for breakfast some mornings with a light agave nectar and blueberries, or some other berry.

Quinoa, rolled or steel cut oats, spelt, etc. are generally okay in moderation. A 3-2-1 carb rotation is a modification you may want to look into as well.

    HTH!
