I bought asparagus for the first time today. I am wanting to make it with ribs, mashed potatoes with sautéed mushrooms with onion. Also, corn on the cob.
I am wondering - what is the best way to try asparagus for a newbie? Grill? Fry? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Is it green or white?
With green, snap off the hard bit at the bottom, toss with a little olive oil and roast 10-12 minutes in a 200c oven.
If it is white, peel the stems and steam or simmer.0 -
Steamed, roasted or grilled is usually how I like it, but I've had them raw as well.0

Green. I am thinking I will try it grilled tonight with garlic and cheese perhaps.0

I like to saute them in Italian dressing and bbq them.0

Roasted with a little olive oil and salt and pepper or grilled tie for best for me. Steamed is good too. It is one of my favorites cooked almost any way.0

I wrap them in prosciutto and bake them in butter.0

first step is to throw it away
next step is steam some broccoli0 -
I saute with olive oil and then season with lemon pepper mix lately.
I do like it with lemon juice sometimes too. Grilled is also preferred, but I don't often do that.0 -

I have broccoli for tomorrow. My goal this year was to try at least 1 new food item from the produce section a week. Asparagus was the winner today!0 -
I made asparagus tonight with sirloin steak and home made mashed potatoes.
LIGHTLY douse the with olive oil, then salt and pepper. In the oven for 15 minutes at 350. You could probably sprinkle garlic or Parmesan cheese on them too!0 -
Cut the bottom off (about 1-2 inches). Then spray lightly with olive oil - sprinkle with garlic salt - and roast in the oven at about 375 for 15 minutes or so. super yummy0

I like them roasted, or sauteed in butter. Absolutely love asparagus!! But now thinking...I havnt had them in a long while. I should get some for dinner tomorrow, and will try something new, sautee them in coconut oil instead of butter.0

I have a George Forman. I decided to experiment a couple of weeks ago & use it to grill some asparagus I had bought. I just put a little bit of extra virgin olive oil on it with a little bit of sea salt & pepper, then put it on the Forman grill for a couple of minuets. I turned out pretty yummy.0

If they are thin then a minute on a hot foreman-type grill is all they need, with a bit of oil and black pepper
For fat ones I like to bake them in a caserole wrapped in parma ham. Tiny bit of butter in the bottom. Very Juicy that way.
Tinned/bottled white ones are great slurped straight out of the tin - I never get those to the plate.0 -
if its white: (Im white asparagus cooking master lol)
peel asparagus, cut off dry ends
put all the peeled stuff in the pot with cooking water add sugar and salt (more sugar than salt) and cook for 10 minutes
remove all the stuff
and put the peeled asparagus in the water for like 10-15 min (medium heat)
Sooooooooooooooooooooo great if you do it like this

stick in the microwave in a little water for a couple of minutes - doesn't need anything to enhance the flavour cos it is bl@@dy beautiful just on its own!!!0

I roasted it tonight with garlic butter. It was soggy. The taste was not too bad - except I do believe it is a little over rated at this point.
One thing I noticed (and my SO) is the smell of the tips....OMG...GROSS! What is up with that? It smelt like...poo.0 -

Hahaha, I like the smell of cooked asparagus but it does make my pee smell funny the next day (it can't just be me??)0 -
its not just you - in fact I find it starts in a couple of hours :ohwell:
For green asparagus, bend it near the thick end until it snaps, then steam until just tender when you stick a sharp knife point in the thickest bit. Put on a plate, top with soft poached eggs and parmesan shavings and serve with a rocket salad.
Or put on top of some rocket, top with slices of goat's chees and just flash under the grill til the goats cheese goeas a bit melty.
Add a bit of smoked salmon to either of these for extra protein. Nomnomnom0
