I was wondering if anyone knows any information about aspartame, I don't want to here "its bad for you" thats what everyone says; but for me to drink water I use Arizona ice tea powder in my bottled water because i hate the taste of water alone. The packs are like crystal light and I also have those and they are no calories and use aspartame instead of sugar, I was wondering if anyone has been made sick from to much intake of aspartame; it's all I have been drinking the past month in my water and today I was really sick as in i felt like i was going to throw up, headache, dizzy, and weak I'm wondering if aspartame would cause this. I have no more then about 5 bottles of water with the sweeteners in it and its 1 pack in each bottle.
Anyone have any info please let me know, I would appreciate it.

Unless you are a phenylketoneuric, or you are ingesting literally BUCKETS full of aspartame, you are not going to be made ill by aspartame.0 -

I get the same reaction to Aspartame. It's not a natural substance therefor your body doesn't know how to process it. I know several people that get migraines from it, and there's lots of info on the internet, but I thought this article was good:

I agree with this. I love caffeine but prefer diet (instead of regular) soda with aspartame because I would rather use the extra calories for something else0 -

someone who has seizures when they ingest too much phenylalanine(an amino acid), which is one of the components (along with methanol, an alcohol, and aspartic acid, another amino acid) of aspartame.

Aspartame is synthesized from 3 "natural" products:
phenylalanine
methanol
aspartic acid.
Your body can "process" it just fine, just like it does with all other foods containing these three items.0 -
These are what I have been drinking for those who don't know, and no I dont think I have phenylketoneuric the only thing I have is asthma, anxiety, depression and OCD. I did have a blood clot in 2007 which was caused from birth control and it always freaks me out when i felt the way i did today that I might have another blood clot just because of how sick I was feeling; can aspartame cause blood clots?

there are many ways to look at this.
sure it is bad for you. but sugar is worse than aspartame. i would chose to have regular old water over flavored aspartame drinks.

well today I ate nothing except when i was actually feeling better and I had fat free or low fat french fries bakes in the oven with ketchup; but probably 95% of the time I dont reach my calorie goal on the app and im under 1,200. I have an odd sleeping pattern/habit and I don't eat much but when i did eat it was unhealthy for me and is what caused me to gain so much weight. Could over exercising be doing this, I exercise 7 times a week from 30 mins to an hour.0

Over exercising is not doing this. However, not eating enough to support your lifestyle could be a major factor. Eat consistently, and eat enough. The more you can do to "stabilize" your eating/sleeping/exercising ... the more consistent your results can be.0 -

Sounds like a virus to me. Lay off all aspatame for a few days. When your symptoms are gone, get back on the aspartame. If symtoms return, maybe it is the aspartame. My wife gets similar symptoms from msg.0

Yes, your body needs fuel, that is why you are feeling like that. I felt the same way when I first started and was overly aggressive about my calorie goal. I upped my calories and have felt great since.
If you are not feeling hungry on so few calories that is also not a good sign. Lack of appetite is a symptom of some vitamin deficiencies and other things you don't want. You probably need to incorporate some fats into your diet so your hormones work properly. Don't be afraid of "bad" foods, learn how to eat reasonable portions of them along with 'healthy' foods. Just eat the amount of calories that will get you a moderate deficit, which is probably considerably more than 1200 calories a day, especially if you're working out so much.

My mom gets migraines and sick to her stomach from it. So I believe you could definitely be having side effects from it.0

I'm also convinced that your symptoms are from eating too little. Try gradually increasing your calories to avoid feeling overly full. Greek Yogurt, some fruit, and a little honey blended up with some ice is a great way to get 300-400 calories in (depending on what fruit you use and how much you make). Toss in some peanut butter if you really need to make it more calorie-dense.0 -

some people are intolerant to it.... phenylketonuria is not the only medical issue that makes aspartame a problem (although that's a lot more serious than an intolerance, as it can be life threatening)
some people get migranes from it, for me it gives me the same symptoms as lactose intolerant people get from lactose. It is possible you could be intolerant to aspartame, my advice would be to totally give it up for a couple of weeks, and see if the symptoms you describe go away. Then eat a large quantity of it in one day, and see if the symptoms come back. personally, I can tolerate small doses of aspartame but more than a certain amount makes me ill (that's also similar to lactose intolerance)
Most people can tolerate aspartame just fine and if that's the case there's no reason for them to give it up.0 -

So what I'm reading here is that you're not eating enough 95% of the time and you're exercising 7 days a week for anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour?
Yes, it's the aspartame that's causing your headaches, weakness, dizziness and feeling like you're going to throw up. Not the fact that you're not eating enough and you're overworking your body and it's trying to tell you to eat more and work out less because it doesn't have the energy for all of it.
Give up the aspartame and keep everything else exactly the same. Then come back and let us know if that worked for you.0 -

I have the same issue, I hate to drink water straight up so I do make lemon "spritzers" with equal, drink Mio, and use Equal in my coffee...I've been doing so for years, and when I got serious on my weightloss grind a little over a year ago, the Mio has been what I've leaned on heavily to up my water consumption...I haven't noticed any adverse effects yet and I've lost a mildly considerable amount of weight...

I was using water flavourers to help me get in all of my daily water intake but ended up having an allergic reaction - hives all over my palms. WTF? Took me quite a bit of trial and error to figure out what was causing the reaction but once I stopped adding artificial flavour (that included aspartame) to my water, the hives went away. Too bad cuz now I'm stuck with a desk drawer FULL of them.
Google "side effects of aspartame" to see what you might be dealing with. Who knew?

I cut out sugared drinks by drinking diet, and I drank a lot of diet. It's gotten to the point though that I've developed some sort of intolerance and whenever I drink something with aspartame I end up with headaches. I'm actually pretty upset about this because I really like the sweet beverages without having to worry about the calories.0
