set small goals for yourself. When you have such an insurmountable goal like (lose 250lbs) it can get discouraging when you don't see the daily or weekly results you want. Instead, set reasonable goals like excercise for 15 minutes a day on week one, week two bump it up to 20, week 3 bump[ it up to 25.
I find that the calorie counter on myfitness pal also helps keep me in line. Log all of your food intake and be honest about it. You'll find that if you have an honest look at what you're eating you will be able to make changes that will really add up.

Hang in there! You have made the first step and gotten to these forums. Read all the posts in this topic over and over again. What seems like a lot of information will start to clear up gradually.

Welcome! You can do this! Whenever you feel like your resolve is slipping, just channel Scarlett O'Hara and tell yourself that "tomorrow is another day!" Just keep going. I also recommend Leslie sansone's Walk Away the Pounds DVD's-particularly the 1, 2, and 3 mile walk. Don't even worry about the Jillian Michaels ones right now-they are HARD! also, always log your food every day, even if you know you have gone way over.0

I started at 428 In July of last year and when I started I would get exhausted taking a shower and could only walk about 200 feet. Now I walk a mile and ride my exercise bike every day. The only trick is starting out slow each day I walked a little more and it got a little better. What I am saying do not push yourself too hard. It is baby steps but and it takes a while. It make take you a while but so what, what ever time it takes will pass the same if you do not try. At least you will have something to show for. Log your meals and keep plugging away. You will not believe how much better you feel in a few months The only exercise I did for the first 6 months is walking. It will take the weight off. Forget the Jullian CDs for now. Start out with a simple calorie deficit. I would set my goal for a 2 pound loss per week at this weight... Eat at or slightly below that level. If you do any exercise for the first month or two, make it something like walking or cycling.. as you lose weight, you can start focusing more on the exercise end of things... Don't focus on what you cannot do, focus on what you CAN do.. and then DO IT... Stick with it... it will be a long process, but you can do it. Last January I was 6'3" and 344... This morning, I weighed in at 224.8... I have been as low as 217 but I don't sweat that... Make it one day at a time and just do it. You can do it...0

1) Exercise: Just walk. 30 minutes every other day to start if you can manage it.
2) Eating: Journal everything you eat for 2 weeks (don't log or count cals, just journal the precise words, no numbers in a book to try to get an accurate idea of your current eating habits with no self-consciousness that could lead to changing. Just simply write like --a bag of doritos snack size, or a double double, or a shake from mcdonalds--chocolate, just the words being precise regarding sizes/measures/flavors/etc). THEN log it on MFP AFTER the two weeks are up and see what your average cal intake is. What it really truly is with no neurotic adjustments due to knowing it's gonna get logged.
3) During those 2 weeks read up on TDEE, Scooby, etc. and make your numbers off of what your current cal intake ends up being.
That's where you start. At the beginning.

You have PCOS and you are 400 pounds which means the standard nutritional advice isn't going to cut it for you. A lot of women that have PCOS don't even understand how having it impacts your health and what you should eat. You need to get your nutritional information from a much better knowledgeable source than the internet, maybe a dietitian but if you don't want to go that route I've set some guidelines for you to follow.
Were you prescribed Metiformin? Most likely, but at 20 years old, your doctor feels you might not need it yet? Did you get an A1C test? Having PCOS and being 400 pounds is a very good combo for being a diabetic, or prediabetic at least. This means the very first thing you should do is go out and buy a Blood Glucose Monitoring Kit. The higher your glucose levels, the harder it is for your body to burn fat because it's constantly being flushed with insulin. Insulin stops the fat burning process. You need to test your glucose levels after your meals to see if it is within the range of normal to find out what works for you. Glucose should be under 100 after 4 hours of eating and under 120, 1 hour after a meal. Those are the idea numbers you want to shot for.
You should be eating an extremely low carb diet with a high fat and protein diet. When you test your glucose levels, you'll know how low you should be. I'm suggesting to start at 60 grams carb max a day as a base line. You will literally be eating globs of fat and protein. Stick with good fats like olive oil. Cook with it but not at high temperatures or it will lose it's nutritiional value and literally eat the fats left over in the pan with whatever protein that you've made. Also, 2k calories max is where you want to be at and I feel that, that might even be a little too high for you. This includes exercise calories. Do not eat exercise calories back.

I completely second this. I too have PCOS and must eat in a way that limits my need for insulin. Also am pre-diabetic. Low carb, high-fat is the best way insulin resistant people lose weight effectively.0 -
Hello and congrats to you for taking the first step in being a healthier you!! I will be honest this journey at times will seem long hard and emotional but the end results will be worth everything you encounter a long the way! Here are my suggestions:
First off, I would consult with a doctor. Talk to him about the healthiest ways to go about losing weight. Get a physical and ask him about calories and safe work outs. The Doctor may recommend a specialist in weight lose.
Next, for the next couple of months forget about workouts. Work on a healthier diet...DO NOT GO COLD TURKEY!! work up to it, make one better eating decision a day before you know it everything you eat will be a health choice. With changing your diet you should see a change in your weight and appearance. You will also find that you will have more energy and you will be motivated to eat even better. Remember to write down everything you put in your mouth even if it is only 1 potato chip!!!
Third, start a work out schedule and slowly build to it. Forget about the workout DVDS. Start with walking, each time you walk try to go a little further. Overtime, try to go the same distance but at a faster pace. When at work go for more walks around the office. Instead of calling someone on the phone walk over to their desk. After you build up endurance and lose a few lbs start pushing yourself to do harder work outs.
Lastly, have goals asupport system. don't look at the big picture break it down into small goals. Today, i will eat one healthy meal. Tomorrow I will walk to the corner and back. Build off of your previous goals. Have daily goals, weekly goals, monthly goals and yearly goals. Reevaluate your goals often!! Your support system will help you stay accountable and get you thru those tough times when you want to throw in the towel.
Most important, be safe don't push yourself over your limit do what works for you! I said suggestions in the beginning because what works for one does not work for all. Find your nitch and everything else will follow!!

Just log here regularly there are so many wonderful people out here that will keep you motivated and stay positive. Everybody can do it, there are so many people heavier than you that made success and live healthy life now. Hi. I know the position you find yourself in well. I see it in my sister. She is only a decade older. I think step one for any one, me included, is to get rid of all sense of urgency. Thinking you have to lose this by the time you're X will kill you when you plateau for 3the months. Next step is just get to know your body, your habits, your patterns. I've learned so very much over the past 4month months since I joined. First thing I learned was calories lurk in dark corners!! Seriously, if you need a friend I'm on here all day everyday... I'm OCD about it and Fitbit honestly, but at least it's a positive thing.0

Your current BMR (the calories you need to keep your vital organs, etc, living) is 2652 calories. What I personally like to do is eat about 100 calories above my BMR and then also eat back exercise calories. I don't feel too hungry and as long as I stick with it, I lose the weight pretty easily.
This is a good place to start.
Even if you do 10 minutes of walking once a day, that's a good start. Eventually make it 10 minutes twice a day... then two 15-minute sessions... then maybe on 20-minute session... up to 30 minutes eventually. But baby steps for now.
Start tracking what you're already eating. See where you're at now.

I'm so glad you decided to join this site and change your lifestyle! My advice for you just starting out is as follows:
Log in every day which includes logging your food, exercise, and reading the forums (Even if you aren't eating according to your calorie goal, logging your food can give you valuable information on your eating habits, basically if you are eating too much, if you have too much sodium, too many carbs, etc. Then you can go about tweaking your diet to gradually make it more healthy. Plus getting on these forums can give you so much information about living a healthier lifestyle. Keep logging on!)
Make gradual changes instead of a major overhaul (Its been proven that gradual changes are easier to stick with and you are more likely to see results from these. If you start off eating only healthy foods, starve yourself, try intense workouts that are above your fitness level, you will easily and quickly get burned out and frustrated and go back to old behaviors. So some examples of gradual changes to make: if Jillian dvds are too intense, try going for a nightly walk after dinner or do some swimming for half an hour. Instead of eating 1200 calories a day just try to quit drinking soda and replace a junky snack with a fresh veggie or fruit.)
Get support (Having people on here as friends and having people in your life support your lifestyle change makes a big difference. It helps when motivation gets tough and when you start slipping back into old behaviors if you can have someone to go to. If you make friends with people on here they can give you so much knowledge on living a fit life.)
Those are the big ones that I can think of right now but basically just stick with it! If you mess up, get back to it tomorrow. You can do this! Also check out the success stories, they are so motivational.
If you can, do a little exercise, and I mean a little. A five-minute walk before work? something easy, convenient, that doesn't take a lot of time or equipment. soon it becomes a longer walk, a longer walk at a faster pace....once some of the weight is gone, you'll find more intense exercise more doable and more appealing.
So many people here have done so amazingly well. There's a posting on here somewhere of people talking about their losses of 100 pounds or more,it went up yesterday I think. Talk about inspirational!0 -
