Some info on Sugar

We all eat sugar in your diets everyday, even if you don't add any to your food, it's there. Fructose, Glucose and Galactose, one or more is in everything we eat, except meat, but the protien is broken down into glucose in our bodies during digestion.

I have been reading a book about sugar and so far it has really opened my eyes to how much sugar we eat on a daily basis without thinking about it and how it is making us fat. I never realized that low fat versions of foods usually contain more sugar then their regular fat counterparts. The last year I have been looking at calories vs fat because low fat doesn't usally mean low calories, especially when you eat more then one serving in a sitting because you think "hey, its low fat, it wont hurt to have two or three...." but those extra calories add up and quickly.

Cutting down on sugar in your diet, from cutting out pop, juice and added sugar to your coffee or tea is a great start. If you find drinking water is too bland, then add some lemon, lime, orange or cucumber (not a fan of the last one but some people say its great) to it. Or you can have crystal light, but watch how much sucralose you consume because it's still sugar (splenda).

I have noticed after cutting down on sugar in my diet (major chocolate lover here) that when I do have something like chocolate it is too sweet. I love that it is summer time because I am a huge fan of watermelon and cantalope, nothing beats a cool piece of melon on a hot day, low in calories, high in fibre and yes there is sugar BUT just watch how much you eat because it is better then scarfing down a chocolate bar or bowl of ice cream.

Also, for those of us who are lactose intolerant (70% of the population is) you are not alone. Almost all adults cannot consume dairy products because our body does not produce the right enzyme to break it down and so it goes right through us if you know what I mean.....I eat yogurt on a daily basis because I find it does help my body and I can break it down because of the added bacteria in yogurt vs milk.

Well, if you knew all this before, then good for you for keeping up on nutritional information. For those of you who didn't, congrats on learning something new that you can think about. We are all in this healthy weight loss boat together, the more we know the better we can all be.

Enjoy the day
