I am aware that this will probably be a contraversial post because I know how much people on here love their nuts. This article was written by a nutritionist that comes highly recommended by someone highly qualified in the fitness industry that I greatly respect and who believes in a very balanced and sensible (and science-based) approach to nutrition and fitness. So have a read and tell me what you think.

I must be a bird then. I dry roast/toast sesame seeds and use them as delicious, healthy seasoning on my food instead of salt. Nuts are great, too. *Flying away now*0

Meh. If I paid attention to all of these articles, I would stop eating, because EVERYTHING has been "proven" to be unhealthy in some way.
I support everything in moderation, always have, always will. I don't see a problem with nuts in the diet as long as that's not the only thing you're eating!
(And I did actually read the article... interesting stuff, but again, I take all of these things with a grain of salt).0 -

I knew that this would get these type of reactions on here but I'm actually really interested in whether people who have taken the time to read the article agree or disagree with what is being said and on what grounds (hopefully scientific). I was a big nut eater too but am re-considering.
You'll notice if you read the article that she doesn't say you can't eat nuts at all ever but recommends cutting down consumption quite a bit from what a lot of people on here would eat and also treating them first.0 -

I agree! Everything in moderation is the only way for me. There is NOTHING we could eat if we listened to all of these articles. I do believe many of them have very good points, but there is no healthy food if we listen to all of them. For me to stick with this, I just have to eat everything in moderation and try to vary my diet as much as I can.0 -

Disagree her studies are old and non related I think maybe she quoted one or two that actually had anything to do with nuts, and there are no studies on seeds. Most of the studies were invitro and looked at supplementation.0 -
I read it. But I have no scientific background that qualifies me to agree or disagree. I eat 15 almonds each day, and a tablespoon of peanut butter in my oatmeal as part of my ususal daily fare. If the article is true; Bummer, as I like nuts and seeds.0

I eat a lot of almonds, cashews and sunflower seeds. Well it's no wonder I keep catching myself chirping on my neighbour's balcony every morning...0

And regarding the peroxidation the great thing about PUFA's is they are in nature generally higher in Vitmain E which is an antioxidant.0

First, it looks like most of the 'science' on this is derived from research on other food types and applying what was found there to nuts broad cloth... there was only one study related to nuts in any way shape or form and that being based off of lipid oxidation.
Secondarily, much of her conjecture in the article is completely unrelated to the topics covered by those papers (a few you can look up on google scholar for instance.)
Third, without applicable science to support it, I'd call this an interesting but completely unsupported hypothesis. There needs to be significantly more information and studies to test this hypothesis directly. Right now it's nothing but bunk science, the first direct sign of this is that there has been no testing of say, almonds a tree nut vs sunflower seeds an annual vs peanuts a legume vs wheat which is a grain seed. Yes, those are all nuts and seeds... but if I lump, oranges as a tree citrus, tomato as an annual fruit, raspberries as a perennial fruit, and avacados as another tree fruit.... as being exactly the same would you take me seriously? This is no different... and no less absurd than that grouping.
Edit: Doing a bit more research she's known as a controversial nutritionist... because from what I can see elsewhere online, her nutritional ideas aren't supported by science like the less controversial nutritionists.
Edit2: She's making up goofy **** to set her apart from other nutritionists. It's hard to get ahead when there are 30 other people with the same science, same info, same data as you... so she's being "creative".
Edit3: I'll also add-- i say this all as someone who really doesn't get much from nuts. They're a bit too calorie dense for me for the most part and given the choice between a handful of nuts and a 150g potato... I'll take the potato every time macro/micro nutrients be damned.0 -
