Cheaper Herbs and Spices for NOOBs

Herbs and spices can make steamed vegs tasty. A little olive oil and Tuscan spices is delicious on bread and cheaper than a jarred relish. The cheapest cut of beef is improved by some smoked salt and freshly ground pepper.
The only problem is accumulating a good variety of herbs and spices can be expensive if you are just starting to use them. For example, 0.3 oz. of dried dill weed in a jar is $5.79 or $19.30 at my local Piggly Wiggly supermarket yet a 1 oz. bag from www.myspicesage.com is only $3.50. A one-pound bag of dill weed is only $14.45 from Amazon or enough for over 50 people to have the equivalent of that jar from the store!
How about getting together with some friends and having a fill-the-spice-cabinet party? Check out my blog post: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/roundgal/view/cheap-herb-spice-party-plan-552363

Spices have really transformed the way I eat, and keep it from getting boring. Penzeys is the best! www.penzeys.com. They have a lot of unusual spices (Berbere is my favorite, followed by Arizona Dreaming) and I love putting them on lots of things, veggies and fish and in cottage cheese...
Would love to hear other people's favorites. Thanks for starting this topic!0 -
I haven't been brave enough to try the Berebere but once upon a time I was able to specify the Maharaja Curry Powder as my freebie with my Penzeys order and it was to die for. I also have some pages on my cooking blog about herbs and spices and other flavoring ingredients:

Try growing a few herbs in a pot!
Lots of fresh herbs also freeze well. I buy cilantro use what I need chop the rest and freeze it in ice cube trays with a little water. This works for garlic and chillis too.
When you buy spices if you can get whole spices and grind them up, they keep fresher for a lot longer in the whole form.0
