I love pilates. It's a fantastic way to strengthen and build lean muscle.

I'm anticipating a certain MFP 'celebrity' to trundle in here soon and start throwing bro science all around.
That aside, Pilates is a great workout. Great for building core strength.0 -
Pilates is very good for building a lean, flexible, strong body without bulking up. It is also a big stress reliever for me. I love it! The DVD that I do uses a strech band, and it is a pretty tough workout! You will get some serious core workout with it!0

Women can't "bulk up" without testosterone/roids.0 -
Good for core strength and mobility in general. Also to some extent seems to be good for relaxation. I find it works well for active recovery on days where I'm not able to do something more intense0

I really enjoy Pilates. I've been more into it this week since getting to the gym is more difficult without my husband here to care for the dogs.
I'm planning to get a nicer (thicker) mat and the resistance bands to start doing Mari Winsor's Slimming Pilates.0 -

It does say, "...without bulking up."0 -
Following. Pilates DVD's are more of a cold-weather type exercise for me. I do a lot of walking and gardening during the warmer months. Oh....and curious who the "MFP celebrity" is.0
-
It is good for core strength and all the stretches really help even out any twists or turns in the body. The stretches and lots of the exercises also lengthen out the muscle. The term 'bulk' is highly subjective IMO and I don't care who doesn't like that statement because I know what my body does. If I do a gym workout, use weights (even small ones) I pack on muscle which doesn't suit me, some people look fabulous building muscle - I however don't. I find with the pilates that it gives you more of a ballet dancers lean-ness and strength that I, at least, can't achieve in the gym.0

Well around here it gets SO hot and SO humid/muggy...it's unbearable to work out outside. Had near heat stroke last year. No good.0 -

I love it. It's helped with my back pain, lifted my butt, and helped me lean out through my torso and thighs. I've been going back to the Mari Winsor dvds for years. I really miss it (and feel it!) when I'm not doing it regularly.0

And I totally get this ^^. I've been leaning heavily on my dvds this summer, and cut wayyyy down on my running.0 -
Pilates is amazing! Check out Cassey Ho, Blogilates.com she uploads tons of pilates videos for free on youtube and there is something for everyone on her website. She incorporates cardio too so you get a good fat burn!0

*sigh* I have done weights in the gym, and I know what I feel and look like: bulky! I don't get that with Pilates. Thanks for the correction, but my statement was correct for me.0 -
Just had to throw this out there...
I remember doing the advanced teaser yesterday (flat on your back, arms back all the way up to the teaser position)...I can finally get there without shaking and wobbling like Jell-o!0 -

Thanks for the tip! I think I just found my new workout series!0 -

For some reason, there's a lot of resistance on MFP to the idea that weights do make (some) women bigger and that not everyone likes the look.0 -
Pilates emphasizes small, precise movements. I like the machines, particularly the Cadillac machine, more than the mat exercises. When I win Lotto I will definitely buy one.0

And to the idea that weights are not for everyone...I understand that people believe the only way to tone up/change body fat % is to do weights...
All I can say is one solid week of being consistent with doing pilates has made more of a change in my shape and tone than a week of doing weights...I think I'll be sticking with Pilates. At least I enjoy it... (To me, weights are boring as sin.)0 -

It's not even that I don't like the look, some women look fabulous all muscled up. But it just doesn't suit my frame or shape. I'm 4'11 with a very small frame and I only have to look at weights to muscle, so I very quickly get hideously huge. All that 'women can't bulk' stuff has to be subjective because I can massively increase the size of my muscles in a relatively short space of time. Increase in size = bulk as I understand it.
The only way for SOME people may be to do weights, but the ONLY way which works for me (joint problems too) in a way which also suits me is Pilates. Plus I just feel so energised, loose and relaxed after all those great stretches.
I'm a massive Suzanne Bowen fan, I love the lean-ness and precision of her workouts.0 -

I'm a Mari Windsor person, but only because those are the only dvd's I have. I'm definitely
going to try that blog.0 -
Love pilates! I go to a studio twice a week and it has done wonders for my neck/back tension, helps me with my form and posture when I'm lifting, and is great for the core/butt! I find it a great balance with lifting - decompress and tone/lengthen. I strongly suggest it to anyone - dvds or going to a studio. I'm hooked0

I've been more into it over the past week or two since my husband has been out of town-been trying to do more exercises at home since I have to be here for my two dogs...since I've been more faithful/consistent over the past two weeks, I'm beginning to see a change in my body-and definitely for the better!0
